Do you iron?

If so which items do you iron? I haven't bothered with ironing for years, but I'm sick of seeing the dc going around in creased clothes. Dh thinks I'm mad and making more work for myself.

OP posts:
SoundofSilence · 07/03/2019 15:08

I am tentatively reducing my ironing after reading many comments on mumsnet from people who don't and the sky doesn't appear to have fallen on their head.

Nothing terrible to report so far. The collars on DS2's school polo shirts are a little less neat, but since he comes home covered in felt tip and tomato most days anyway, it really isn't possible to tell the difference. I still iron 'smart' work shirts, and DS1 irons his school shirts and jujitsu uniform, but that's about it. It's amazingly liberating. I'll have to see how it goes when I move on to line drying in the summer.

DonPablo · 07/03/2019 15:12

I wasn't an ironer at all. Then dc started secondary school, so I ironed his 5 shirts every weekend. Now, I'm an ironer-because I think ooh, while I've got the iron out I'll just do this and that too. And now I spend 1 and half hours ironing every Saturday morning!

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 07/03/2019 15:13

I'm not one of those women who looks polished, look even worse if I try, so crumpled is fine.

Omzlas · 07/03/2019 15:14

Yes, school uniforms and I've started (again) doing everything else like shirts, bedding etc. I love me an ironed pillowcase ❤

PrismGuile · 07/03/2019 15:15

@Rafflesway please don't say 'virtually OCD' it is demeaning. I've gone 23 years of my life and ironed maybe 6 things total and I actually have OCD

IdaBWells · 07/03/2019 15:16

My kids are all teens so if anyone in our household wants something ironed we do it ourselves.

dementedpixie · 07/03/2019 15:17

I do dh's shirts and the kids schoolwear. I don't iron anything else

magicstar1 · 07/03/2019 15:17

DH irons his shirt if we're going out somewhere special, or the table runner if we have company. Other than that, we never iron. MIL even bought us an iron a couple of years ago as "we obviously didn't have one". I just laughed and said "Now we have two we won't use"

Hotterthanahotthing · 07/03/2019 15:22

I only iron in summer if cotton has dried to a crisp on the line.
My dd has been shown how to iron and now just does the collar and front bit.She took my advice and found that most creases fall out under your jumper.

Rafflesway · 07/03/2019 15:22

Apologies PrismGuile!

Just repeating the words people who know me say about me. Nothing intended against anyone else.

BangGoesThatTheory · 07/03/2019 15:25

I’m the same as funnystory and scarus
Always get stuff out of the washing machine as soon as it’s finished, so it can’t sit there and crumple.
Shake it, pull sleeves into shape and hang over the airer, or on hangers.
No one has ever noticed and I don’t even own an iron or ironing board.

Babdoc · 07/03/2019 15:27

Haven’t ironed since DH died, 27 years ago. I used to do his work shirts. I live in T shirts which dry crease free on radiators, and I wore hospital scrubs at work, which they laundered.
There are plenty of more interesting things to do than ironing!

HJWT · 07/03/2019 15:29

I don't BUT I use my straighteners to 'Iron' DD's bits that are extra creased 😁😁😁

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 07/03/2019 15:37

Nope no ironing here, we do still own one though. I think we last got it out for a wedding 4 years ago.

I just don't agree with those who say people look unkempt or not smart. The vast majority of people who iron then sit in a car with a seat belt crumpling their clothes to go to work. If you know how to shake and hang clothes properly then you are going to look no less smart by the time you arrive at work.

No one ever lay on their death bed and bemoaned their lack of ironing and if someone judges you for not ironing then so what?

sunshineandshowers21 · 07/03/2019 15:43

i iron everything! mostly because my mum always ironed everything when i was younger, but also because i’m a teacher and my boyfriend is a solicitor and i think it’d look unprofessional if we were walking round in crumpled up clothing.

JaneEyre07 · 07/03/2019 15:45

I love ironing... i put the board up in the kitchen, fire Alexa up with something like dance music and I'm quite happy! I even iron tea towels.

I can't understand how anyone can walk around in creased clothes, it says slob to me, sorry.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 07/03/2019 15:48

but also because i’m a teacher...and i think it’d look unprofessional if we were walking round in crumpled up clothing.

Errrm I'm also a teacher, it's not unprofessional. Trust me none of the staff I've worked with would be able to tell I didn't iron. My clothes would be no more or less creased than ironed clothes by the time the parents and children arrived.

People do realise that even ironed clothes become creased when worn?

forknspoon · 07/03/2019 15:57

Nope don’t own an iron. One big crumpled up family tbh. Dd at private school and I have no shame Grin

MonoClue · 07/03/2019 16:04

I bought a new basic iron when I moved into my flat 7 years ago that I’ve never usedBlush
Last year I bought a table top ironing board. It’s sitting in my airing cupboard still in it’s plastic shrink wrap.
I would however love a steamer. I used to volunteer in a charity shop and could wizz through a rail of 100 items in less than 30 minutes Grin

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 07/03/2019 16:14

I don't allow things to sit in the washer or dryer which is why it makes me cross if dh shoves in a load and doesn't say

anyway...out of the washer, shake and straighten and onto the airer/washing line or into the dryer

when it's dry almost there's more shaking and straightening and then I employ my secret weapon... The Folder

Once it's all folded into lovely identical rectangles it sits on the range in a massive pile to air, the heat from the range and the weight of the pile means no ironing ever.

Petalflowers · 07/03/2019 16:21

Yes, iron. Generally put on a film and get ironing.

Shirts, trousers, t-shirts, tops, bedding, - all ironed today.

I’m always impressed by those who can judge exactly when the Tumble dryer finished. Having the tumble drier in the darage probably doesn’t help. That reminds me, must go and get the sheets out I put in before lunch...

PuppyMonkey · 07/03/2019 16:21

I don’t iron and I don’t have particularly crumpled clothing either, as I’m an expert at hanging things up to dry properly.

RedRiverShore · 07/03/2019 16:26

No, I wouldn’t buy anything that would get so crumpled it would need ironing, I tumble dry stuff which knocks the creases out, as long as you don’t overfill the dryer.

kittybee · 07/03/2019 16:32

I don’t mind ironing at all. I usually do it watching a movie. I iron almost everything, including face cloths, towels, and tea towels (I like that they look neater in the cupboard), but I don’t iron underwear.

TrixieFranklin · 07/03/2019 16:32

No. DH irons his shirts though but none of my clothes need it and I'm not ironing my toddlers clothes they'd be crumpled again in minutes.
