downstairs loo fills up with water then goes down slowly - advice?

upstairs loo is fine but downstairs loo has just started to fill up loads when it is flushed and then returns to low level slowly

also the low level it returns to is slightly lower than normal

had pipes/drain jet washed last september as downstairs loo kept filling up then - bloke said they should be done around every 18 months or so (he checked mine and neighbours drains and said all were blocked)- cant believe it needs doing again?

sil reckons it might just be all the rain and to leave off forking out for a plumber just yet

what do you think?

get yourself a proper plunger (you'll need a plumber's merchants, not B&Q I think.) and plunge away. It happens with our downstairs loo quite a bit and it's because our pipe doesn't graduate enough. One or two plunges with the proper tool and it's sorted (although not very pleasant).

We always had that when it rained heavily. Just used the one upstairs until it stopped.

can i ask.... do u use kandoo or similar wipes?

If so please dont flush them cause they do block loos.
put them in a nappy bag and bin them instead

We have a terrible old drainage system here in Cyprus and when we moved out here we were told this was the classic sign for a blockage. Happens all the time for us and every time they have to dynarod it!

Ooo we have this problem often, it only takes one child with a runny bum and a full roll of loo roll and...........

If too much loo roll is stuffed into a loo, it will (sometimes) flush away but then can get trapped and form a wall in the pipes.

You can buy rods, which we have and dh used to pull up the man hole cover ( not a nice job) and stick the rods down, often the blockage was outside rather than in the pipes from the loo. The upstairs loo is clearing because it has all that pipework to fall into but chances are that sewage is getting stuck at the blockage too which will be somewhere between the downstairs loo and outside - could be in the pipe that leads to the main pipe in which case a plunger would help.

I used a metal coathanger last time we had a block cause it was all stuck in the back bit of the loo - eughhh - dd 9 was so ashamed ;-)

Also when it returns to normal use the thinnest paper you can get - not your luxury quilted blanket types - as they're more likely to make the drain clog up esp if there's a big poo in there. Our plumber told us to use Value or Economy loo roll in our downstairs loo (it's a macerator type).
