New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

StealthNinjaMum · 29/12/2018 10:28

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

Hi this thread is great. How do people cope parting with stuff that has got worth, eg loads of LEGO, but which you can't sell? I'm so tempted to keep it 'just in case' I can get money but it could take forever, might not be much, and in the meantime it's making my house cluttered.

Toomanycats99 · 03/01/2019 19:38

I took 2 Ikea bags of toys to the charity shop today. I had them on fb and also took to a sale so they didn't go. I decided the happiness of not having the clutter of them around was more than the happiness of the £30.

Not sure when it comes to Lego though. I recent sorted a ton of Playmobil and got about £60 for it. The Lego will be way worse though so not sure if I can face that.....although I guess it would maybe be £150 or so in selling price.

But then how many hours of my time would it be to sort it.........probably under minimum wage!

Mumof1DS · 03/01/2019 20:49

The hanging suit bag idea for wrapping paper rolls is genius... Bravo for that!
I'm using up my wrapping paper stash and moving to tissue paper now because it can be recycled whereas most wrapping paper can't. Until then, it can hang in the spare room!

I have had a good go at decluttering a few bits.

  1. Made progress by getting rid of the box I had previously started unpacking from our house move 6 months ago! But inside it were DH's old family photos so they just got moved to a different part of the loft for labeling up and putting away properly, and my last pair of ballet shoes. So really I only decluttered the box which is now in pieces in the recycling bin.
Although having seen the points above about getting rid of stuff so that you or others don't feel obligated to hold onto them, I may now bin them. There's nothing special about them or anything other than being my last pair as I don't really dance any more.
  1. Decluttered a t shirt of DS's. I haven't been able to get rid of the beans stain from nursery, so out it's gone. It came in a set so I kept the leggings as they are perfectly fine still.
  2. Decluttered an article from the paper about weaning that mum saved for me months ago, I just hadn't had chance to read it Blush nothing groundbreakingly informative, so it's gone in the recycling.
  3. Came across a far too small t shirt of DS's in his wardrobe which has gone in the too small box in the loft, defeating the idea of decluttering! However he's only worn it about twice and i'm biding my time for more babies BlushBlush possibly doesn't count...
Thatsnotmybaby · 03/01/2019 20:57

Thanks @WoogleCone! I think that if I went through my jewelry box properly, I could probably throw out more than I would keep but, baby steps!

3rd January:
Packet of baby rice, hasn't been touched in about 9 months.

WoogleCone · 03/01/2019 20:59

mumof1ds this thread makes me happy too haha! I love the housekeeping boards but this is the only one I post to and was a lurker before that.
I'm also now biding my time on kids clothes. The lot I put in the recycling box earlier were stained and very well worn and I had the intention of adding all the other small stuff to it if we found out the gender of DC2 today to be a boy but she couldn't get a view during the scan! Keeping hold of it now just incase we have another girl 😍

Early start at work tomorrow for me so probably not a decluttering day but me and DH both have the weekend off (I usually work every weekend so this is rare!) So will make lots of effort Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Quite looking forward to it!

bobgoblin · 03/01/2019 21:03

Quite a productive day today. I put all the decorations away in the loft. I didn't realise how much other stuff is up there though. There's about 3 boxes which I have put in there and I know what's in them. There are huge amounts of other things in there which either belong to DH or were PILs. It all needs sorting through but I think we need to concentrate on the main parts of the house first.

I had a good clean up in the kitchen. Not much went out but it looks a lot less cluttered in there now I've moved things around and found cupboard space for a couple of big bits. I got rid of 3 spare medicine spoons and one medicine syringe, a cutlery caddy that doesn't fit anywhere so we don't use it, a random tin and a whole pile of recycling. DH has since claimed the tin and cutlery caddy because 'they might be useful'. Hmm. I've told him they need to go into the garage. Then I'll make him get rid when we get round to sorting that out!

Two loads washed, dried and put away as well so there's less clothes lying around the place. Done a couple of admin jobs and deleted a few more emails. Am now decluttering wine while I sort through our finances.

SandAndSea · 03/01/2019 21:34

Another big tin on the out pile today with lots of cleaning and laundry too. I'm planning a charity shop run tomorrow.

Peregrina · 03/01/2019 21:40

Not so productive for me today because on childcare duties, but did persuade DH to start sorting out his junk in the garage. So far he has emptied 4 box files and 8 ring binders of notes from courses he did 20 years ago. Plus exam timetables from the same time (why didn't they go in the bin as soon as the exams were over?) Other manky ring binders went straight in the recycling. He swore he thought he'd already got rid of these. The oldest things to go were musty holiday brochures from 1971.

The decorations came down yesterday; the cards were looked at again and put in the recycling.

3 bags of stuff have been put out for the charity shop tomorrow. I even phoned to ask whether they would want the items and they said yes.

Willow - I'm almost vegan if you need any ideas? Feel free to msg me. x

Mumof1DS · 03/01/2019 22:55

@wogglecone ooh congratulations! How exciting Grin odd question, as your username mentions woggles, are you a scouter/guider??

@iwillwearthegreenwillow - you have a very responsible sounding DS to be saying that! Is he old enough to assist by cooking said vegan delights? Wink

MsAwesomeDragon · 03/01/2019 23:42

I haven't done much decluttering today. I have been working on an assignment that's due tomorrow. It was longer and harder than I'd expected and it's taken me all bloody day, I've literally just finished and I started at 9am.

Dd1 has managed to do some decluttering in her room though. She's got 4 bin bags for the tip run tomorrow, and another big bag of recycling. So I'm counting today as a win, then tomorrow will be the big win when I actually do the tip run with a full car load.

WoogleCone · 04/01/2019 06:25

@mumof1ds I'm not a scouter no, a woogle cone is a very sophisticated device used to aid fixing magic wands in Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom 😂😂 alongside an Icklepoo Clamp! I'm crap at thinking up usernames and DD was watching this particular episode last time I changed haha

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 04/01/2019 09:15

@JamieOliverschickennugget’ could you donate your Lego to a local school? Even up to age 12, the kids in my school love building with Lego. That’s where all mine has gone

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 04/01/2019 09:18

I’m doing some paperwork filing today as well as starting to take the decs down.

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 09:25

Yes I am but theres over 300 pounds worth. Plus mindstorm which was 250 just for that.

Battenburg1978 · 04/01/2019 10:40

JamieOliversChickenNugget, is it very specialised Lego? Around here Lego / duplo goes like a shot. Would you be happy to sell it for a reduced price just to get it out of the house? I do this with baby clothes via Facebook.

I have faltered since going back to work TBH. Need to try and do a little each evening and last night I watched Netflix instead. My DD seems now to be at the size where some of her current size still fit and so do some of her next size, but I don't have enough room to have both sizes in her drawers at once! Her next size is all 2nd hand bought in bundles and I can't even remember what she's got.

This evening I will definitely try to photograph a few more bits for selling.

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 10:43

Yes all completed sets, ships, police station, harry potter, allsorts, the mindstorm is virtual reality a robot. Missing the odd part but nothibg dramatic. Then 2 huge boxes full of random bricks.
May stick it on gumtree

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 10:44

Would rather get 50 quid than have it around getting cluttered

sandgrown · 04/01/2019 10:48

Finally let go of my degree notes! Filed some certificates DS was awarded about 8 years ago and listed some items on e bay so feeling quite productive.

Battenburg1978 · 04/01/2019 11:27

I wonder if there's a specific FB page or website that's good for Lego selling?

Right, I've finally list another bundle of baby clothes on FB to see if it will sell. Summer stuff so might not right now!

toomanysmallpeoplecallmemom · 04/01/2019 12:07

Tried to sort through my pajamas and tops but my heart isn't in it today 😪 settled for finding a home for leftover Christmas tags and clearing off the top of my bedroom drawers

Mumof1DS · 04/01/2019 12:36

@wooglecone - makes sense? I've just realised you said woogle and not woggle Grin my only defence is that I read and responded during a night feed and was half asleep Grin
I got a bit excited lol, most people, when I mention a woggle say "wtaf is a woggle??" So I assumed Grin

ifiwasabutterfly · 04/01/2019 12:36

Am getting ready to join in tomorrow. Am going to take all the Xmas decs down and pack away and have a general clean before I start going room by room.

Kids are back at school on Monday and I work from home PT, its quite a quiet time of year work wise so I need to crack on.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good cleAning product to wipe down all of the doors and woodwork with? I've seen people get slated on here in the past got saying they don't know how to clean properly, but I grew up in a chaotic household and I don't remember either of my parents doing housework Blushcertainly no one ever showed me how!

StealthNinjaMum · 04/01/2019 13:02

I have seen Lego sold by the kilo on Facebook so that's one way of getting rid of it or you could see if a local school or charity wants it.

ifiwas abutterfly I don't really know how to clean things either. I have been known to just use a cloth with fairy liquid to do that sort of stuff and when my washing machine died and I got behind it I think I used a strong kitchen spray like mr mr muscle on my skirting boards.

Today I have discarded an apron stbexmil bought me for Christmas one year.
