New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Today's wins-

Christmas cards out to either bin(glitter) or recycling.

Listed some toys / clothes for sale on FB

Discovered another bag of paperwork for taking to work to shred.

Started to sort DD's just growing out of clothes size. Urgh! I've got so many clothes packed away for her 2-3 size that I need to able to get them out to see what I have and label for nursery. All bought in bundles from FB so total mishmash! But once this is done I'll have more space as currently am storing 2 sizes.

Happy Sunday Fellow Declutterers!

StealthNinjaMum · 06/01/2019 10:52

Thanks toomanycats99 as much as I would love every item of dh's to leave the house sadly I have a big house and it would be petty to make him move everything. I am pleased that he is taking away some of our more ugly furniture so I can start making the house my my own a bit more. He told me that his parents had given him a verbal list of all the presents they'd given him and to make sure he took them before I threw them away and I'm stunned! I may have mentioned a million times that they're hoarders which is where he gets his hoarding tendency from they seem more concerned about a fucking ugly pot they once gave him and a mahogany clock which didn't match with our light wood than the effect on our children of him being a dick......... And breathe....

Anyway I have to take the decorations down. I am tempted to just put the decorations in a big binbag - just to get them down - and then sort them all next week. Last year I organised all the decorations so maybe I'll spend some time on that tomorrow.

Not sure how much decluttering I'll get done though. Probably not much.

Hey everyone.

Yesterday was bad for decluttering. Today we went to IKEA so brought stuff in, however we had a list and stuck to it. DH is currently getting the drill out to secure DDs new storage unit to the wall and putting a shelf up. When he's finished and hoovered, were all going upstairs to go through ALL her toys and sifting through what she plays with, what we can get rid of or if anything is in good enough condition to keep for DC2.

It's all been in stacking boxes whilst renovating a couple of rooms so will be good to let her loose on it all!

I desperately need to get a set of drawers painted but I can't seem to find what I want. And the time to do it. Must try harder

Peregrina · 06/01/2019 15:47

.......some of it was from 4 years ago!

4 years! That's nothing. Where DH is concerned, it has to be at least 20 years old before he can even think of getting rid of it, and then it has to be put on the 'to be considered' pile for another 5 years at least.

OublietteBravo · 06/01/2019 16:49

I thoroughly cleaned our bedroom today. I turned the mattress, and whilst it was off the bed I took out all the slats, dusted them and the frame, and replaced them. I got rid of two empty shoeboxes and a base for a lamp we threw out 4 or 5 years ago, all of which I found lurking under the bed.

HalloumiGus · 06/01/2019 17:14

Is anyone else struggling between the urge to be minimalist plus the prepper urge? I would love to get rid of stuff but because of the unpredictability of Brexit and impact on food stocks / budget cuts / inflation/ possible redundancies it's tempting to just keep everything 'just in case'. It's one thing getting rid of obvious rubbish but I'm reluctant to be totally ruthless in case we get rid of stuff that might be useful if we are on a reduced income.

pippistrelle · 06/01/2019 17:35

I think I have plenty of crap to get rid of before I have to weigh up what might be useful in the event of the zombie (or Brexit) apocalypse, unless there's a sudden interest in greying bras and pants, for that is what I chucked out today. The remaining underwear is now beautifully organised and colour coded, ombre style.

I also returned some boots that don't fit.

Quite pleased with progress.

WoogleCone · 06/01/2019 18:12

DD had fun with her boxes, we got rid of a full box worth of useless bits, lost parts from old toys etc. All her books are sorted and her new stuff is now in her room instead of the living room.
So that box plus the old clothes for the textile bin is a fair bit to get rid of on my day off, which is Thursday this week. Might take the plunge and buy some furniture paint that day too. Thursday's will be become my day to do stuff as DD is starting to go for a full day at nursery instead of just the morning from this week.

I like to stockpile some stuff halloumi but it's stuff like toilet roll (which we buy in bulk 40 rolls at a time). I'll likely stock up on nappies before B-day, just incase. I don't think we'll struggle to quite the degree that some would have us believe but I do think there will be less choice with the things we can buy. Only time will tell I guess! (I am nervous for people relying on medical supplies though)

Think I'll make a list tonight of areas left to go through while DH watches the football. I keep thinking of things and then forgetting them so a master to do list is needed!

StealthNinjaMum · 06/01/2019 18:13

Decorations away and I cut my finger so used up the LAST DISNEY PRINCESS PLASTER! My children refuse to use them now so it has taken me about two years to finish the damn box! This makes me stupidly happy.

All Christmas decorations and tree down and in the loft today

OublietteBravo · 06/01/2019 18:26

The Christmas tree is down, as are the last of the Christmas decorations. It’s amazing how big our living room looks.

HalloumiGus · 06/01/2019 18:58

Yep decorations put away too and yes to room looking much bigger! Will miss the twinkly lights though!

Huge kitchen clearing today. Got rid of an old travel cup, various free recipe leaflets and a few random plastic tubs. Also in bedroom drawers found an enormous pair of giant belly warmer post CS pants which have been loitering for years. Said a fond farewell.

MunchMunch · 06/01/2019 18:58

General day to day rubbish is out, just got the massive black sack of recycling to take out. I really need a bin for it as for the last few days the bag has lived in the kitchen floor getting shifted round the room when it gets in the way 🤦‍♀️

I've tried to stick to my cleaning list today so nothing extra has been decluttered.

Dh wants to make a list and photo some of the blu-rays/steel books that he's going to sell.

Can't wait to declutter the kids back to school tomorrow Grin

SandAndSea · 06/01/2019 20:02

Still helping my mum. Been wrapping and boxing up glassware etc. Never have I taken so much care and given up so much time for things which are clutter, but hopefully, they will do someone a good turn. We now have 3 large boxes, 6 large bags, an upright cleaner and a walking stick-seat piled up, ready for collection.

I have rescued a few things for myself.

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/01/2019 20:15

I have a pile of books to go to the charity shop now after dd2 sorted out her shelves so she can fit in the books she got for Christmas. She only has a box room so there's categorically NO SPACE for any more storage in there, so for each thing she brings into the room she needs to get rid of an equivalent.

SandAndSea · 06/01/2019 21:21

I'm looking at the bits and bobs I've rescued, trying to sift through and get rid of some more. So far, I've managed to talk myself out of a pizza dish.

Do I really need an IKEA picture hanging set? (Hmmm... I think I might do.)

I'm also binning some more underwear.

justforareply · 06/01/2019 22:36

Yay! Left alone tonight 😄
All decs down
Quick swoop of attic bedroom:
2 old school bags binned
Not used overnight bag - charity (been superseded anyway)
Bloody horrible mermaid blanket - 🤢 - someone will like it!
Toilet bag
Various bits and bobs rehomed appropriately and spare duvet covers and duvets sorted so a good start earlier than I thought as still sch holidays 😄

Bowerbird5 · 06/01/2019 23:15

Some paper from presents and packaging from food. DD and I polished off the last of mince pies so box from that too.
Big pile of clothes for charity shop.

SandAndSea · 06/01/2019 23:33

More outs including a stepladder and a broom handle.

goingonabearhunt1 · 07/01/2019 03:21

Currently staying at my DM's and have cleared out the last of my childhood stuff. 2 bags of rubbish and a big pile of books and soft toys to donate. Rest is boxed up ready for DM to bring up next time she drives to see us. DP is at home still packing for the move which I will continue with when I return on Thursday. You never know, I might find some more to get rid of then.

goingonabearhunt1 · 07/01/2019 03:22

I've gotten a bit obsessive to the point where I'm constantly looking for things to bin/donate now. DP also donated a bag of books last week inspired my efforts.

Well yesterday didn't go quite as planned. Had intended to crack on hugely with the attic while we were at home with DS poorly and DH at home. The best laid plans and all that... Our washing machine packed in so we had to bundle DS up and head to the shopping centre.
Before that however, I managed to start on another moving box from the attic and managed:

  1. DH saying an old camping stove could go. Currently in the utility room, but designated for the tip (gas appliance).
  2. Some old cards split between recycling and bin, glitter depending. Saved our wedding cards from family/close friends.
  3. An old changing mat in the bin. We bought a new one recently because the plastic had all split on ours, didn't realise DH had dumped ours in the spare room Hmm.

That's about it. Am planning to do my wardrobe tonight once DS is asleep.

Would appreciate advice from fellow declutters: I have a bag of pre baby underwear, matching nice sets (nothing old or grey, that got thrown) which I saved. I'm wondering whether to keep it or not. I'm breastfeeding so not the same cup size as I was right now. Planning a few more DC and intend to BF with all so thinking that it won't fit again for quite some time. To keep or not to keep? I wouldn't normally debate something this much, but undies in 30 and 32F are quite expensive Confused any thoughts?

Mumof1DS · 07/01/2019 07:04

@iwillwearthegreenwillow - the higear boot bags? They could then either hang up or be out the way in the shed/garage/outhouse but protected from the crawlies by the bag Grin
