The Organised Mum Method

Does anyone fancy joining me in following the organised mum method?

Back to work tomorrow after the summer off (work term time only) and need to get on top of a house work routine after struggling this last year or so to stay on top of things.

I suffer with anxiety and can easily get lost in my mood without structure and I like what I saw on the website. Will probably tweek the method as I go but it's a good structured plan to kick things off.

I work odd hours around the kids being at school but have a clear hour each day to dedicate to this. Plus I am sick of losing my weekends to playing catch up when I could be doing nicer things with the kids!!

Four of us in a 4 bed semi which is clean, just full of stuff that comes with having kids. It can get pretty messy!

Have done the odd bit of decluttering over the summer which has made a bit of a difference!

Looking forward to having a house that doesn't embarrass me on the odd occasion a guest arrives unannounced Blush

Morning everyone.

Just basic level 1 stuff today, washing on, I've added fill and empty dishwasher to my list too.

I get my new tumble dryer tomorrow, which will help keep me ahead with the washing in winter.

Steala · 07/10/2018 13:55

I'm loving this. We have people coming over this afternoon. I looked around the house, decided it looked like a normal family home and made a cake instead of cleaning!

I'll never have a show home but I'm really hoping I keep this up and never have a complete pit again either.

Booksandpens · 07/10/2018 20:01

Completely fallen off the wagon again. It did work when I was doing it, but it seems I can't keep up a routine for more than a week. Need to get back to it this week.
I've also stopped using my bullet journal these last few months, and everything is suffering from it.

Yonijust · 07/10/2018 20:33

I will start this as soon as I get rid of a load of shit clutter Sad

danigrace · 08/10/2018 06:52

Thanks very much for the explanations Little and Steala! This sounds like a fun thing to jump in to if I ever have more free time!!
Sounds quite similar in that flylady daily routines / level 1 take care of all the basics and stops any room getting built up etc. But the rooms rotate for declutter or deep clean so you work on them for around a week each month (in one go) which I like because I'm not always reliable in completing everything every day so it gives me some grace and can always see a big difference in the decluttered/deep cleaned zone each week!

Cherrypi · 08/10/2018 10:24

Still loving this routine. It’s so well thought out. Monday living room cleaned as you’ve been using it all weekend. Friday variety to renergise you after a week of cleaning.

Littlechocola · 09/10/2018 13:57

We still have guests so I’m only managing level 1 jobs. I want to clean Grin

RaspberryBlonde · 09/10/2018 14:20

Our guests left this morning littlechocola but DS has decided that all he wants to do now the house is finally quiet again is sleep on my lap! Am hoping to catch up tomorrow as hallway usually takes me less than half an hour.

Littlechocola · 09/10/2018 16:45

RaspberryBlonde I’ll be sleeping when my guests go too!
Quite excited to get my new spray mop. Who have I become?!

2slicesoftoast · 09/10/2018 21:25

Any one else excited about cleaning their hall tomorrow??!! Or just me?
I have 8 pannelled doors leading off my hall (flat, no stairs) and normally dread cleaning it. But the last couple of weeks I've cleaned the doors as part of my level 2 jobs for each room so I only have 3 doors ( and the skirting boards, lampshades, mirror, etc) to clean! Feels much more manageable!

WeeSausage · 10/10/2018 09:07

Nope! Can't say I am, toast.

Any suggestions for cleaning the ceiling in the stairwell? I know everybody has to live somewhere, but it's time for my spider farm to move on.

gremolata · 10/10/2018 10:09

I've been really enjoying everyone's posts on here - it's got me motivated to do the method properly after just dabbling with it. But one thing I was struggling with was bathrooms. We have 3 (not a stealth boast - it's a funny little house which happens to have 3 funny little bathrooms in odd places!) - and I couldn't manage to get to all of them in my level 1 job time. I saw a video Gem had posted about just doing a bit in each bathroom every day. So I've come up with a little mnemonic which has really helped me (I don't like having to refer to lists every day - this way I just know what to do on what day). Suddenly I feel really on top of the bathrooms so they're no longer stressing me out!
Monday - Mirrors (and radiators, skirting boards, door knobs and other fiddly bits)
Tuesday - Toilets
Wednesday - Wet things (sinks, bath, shower trays)
Thursday - Thower thcreens (couldn't come up with anything that starts with Th...)
Friday - Floors

RaspberryBlonde · 10/10/2018 11:03

Gremolata I love that! I may steak it as bathrooms are still causing me issues.

Haven't got as far as the hallway yet today but have done two loads of laundry (many, many sheets after visitors) and made some soup for lunch.

WeeSausage is there such a think as an extending feather duster? Or you could fasten one to a broom somehow to tackle the spiders? We have to live with bits of the stairwell being dusty as the design of our stairs means that some of it is very high and a long way from anything you can stand on. Fortunately it's not that bad.

Raffertythe2nd · 10/10/2018 11:18

WeeSausage, I use a flathead education micrfibre mop to get the ceilings as they are quite high and we seem to have a ridiculous amount of spiders. If that doesn't reach, could you tape it on to a broom handle?
Gremolata😃. Good plan. Might have to copy that.

laceygo · 10/10/2018 14:24

Just seen this method ... never heard of it before ! Love it so far Smile
Just cleaned all my doors leading off the hallway , dusted all the photo frames and trinket cupboard in hall, hoovered floor and cleaned skirting boards in hall.

Tomorrow kitchen Shockdreading it and looking forwards in equal measures Smile

Shiteatusernames · 10/10/2018 14:44

Hallway done, it really does need decorating, same as everywhere in the house.

PookyHook · 10/10/2018 17:01

Hi everyone, I've just started this. I'm on day 3. I think I'm doing OK with the level 2 jobs, I manage to get most of the tasks completed in the 30 minutes, but level 1 jobs take me ages.

Gremolata that's great, I also have three bathrooms and I was just thinking today that I would have to come up with a plan like this, but now I don't have to, I can use yours! Thanks!

Today it took me about 40 minutes to finish the level one jobs. I include emptying the dishwasher, clearing away breakfast dishes and wiping down the kitchen surfaces in level 1.

So far today I have spent an hour and 10 min cleaning, and I still have two loads of laundry to fold and put away. I hope I manage to get quicker at this as the weeks progress.

Brideslave · 10/10/2018 17:42

Hi - room for another?
I have just started this method this week (I sacked the cleaner last week Blush).
I have a few questions, if anyone can help:
Level 1 jobs - do you do the same every day? Do you include the dishwasher and load of laundry in that? I haven't been including any food prep type stuff (so excluding dishwasher and wiping surfaces after meals) should I? I also need to come up with a system for the bathroom and loo - so far I have just wiped them over a bit each day whilst the kids are in the bath. I did mop the bathroom floor today because I was using the mop anyway (I swapped kitchen to today as it is my quietest day) so counted that as a level 1 job.
I haven't bootcamped - mainly because the house isn't in too bad a state - but i found 30 mins really not enough for the kitchen. Should I boot camp?
Bathroom - I really can't see my bathroom lasting out 8 weeks with just a quick wipe over (tbh this is all the cleaner ever did and I would clean it properly at the weekend, every weekend - it takes me at least half an hour). Any tips?
How have you got other halves in on it? My DH does NOTHING. He isn't lazy but he wouldn't clean a thing unless it was actually a health hazard. So, he has always paid for the cleaner to do his "share". We got rid of her last week as it transpires that she was cleaning for a neighbour too - whilst she was supposed to be at our house (and vice versa) Angry I was thinking a list for him?

Clairedebear101286 · 10/10/2018 20:01

I have two living rooms - should I just alternate the rooms each week?

mrsoutnumbered · 10/10/2018 22:17

@Brideslave I personally don't like to clean my bathrooms every day, i give the sinks a wipe and the toilets a clean daily, but give them a proper clean once a week on a Wednesday. The halls and stairs get done on a Monday instead with the living room.

I do my version of level 1 jobs every day - dishwasher, vacuum kitchen, downstairs hall and living room (the high traffic areas), make beds etc. The usual day to day stuff. But I don't do a load of laundry every day, I wait until I have a full load.

madmum5811 · 11/10/2018 12:41

Hoovered through bedroom, hall, sitting room. Then set about the sitting room, dusting, wiping, moving furniture, polishing, cleaning pictures, tv etc. in between doing that I hit the bathroom bleaching around the bath and leaving to soak then returning to rinse off and spray bath with cleaner leaving to sink in before scrubbing, cleaning sink, loo, floor. I like to leave the chemicals to sink in. Then girded my loins and hit the conservatory, went through toys, lifted all ornaments and dusted. Swept floor. Hardened my resolve and threw out some cushions I really never liked. After two and a half hours in this humid heat I am broken.

Need to go to tip with all the stuff I have been decluttering which I have been storing in the shower room off the spare room.

RaspberryBlonde · 12/10/2018 10:05

Claire, I also have 2 living rooms, I tend to treat the main one as a level one job, so it never gets too bad and do the second which is mainly the kids playroom on the Monday to remove the weekend carnage! I think alternating weeks might mean they both get bad in between, you could try 15 mins in each?

Can’t believe your cleaner did that brideslave! M DH is helpful but a fan of the blitz method over little and often so does very little in the week and then dashed around like mad at the weekend.

Was meant to have a friend coming this morning so everything got an extra tidy last night but unfortunately she’s not well now so going to try to tackle some of the Friday focus. Bedroom not great at the moment as cot is blocking things and makes it hard to clean.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/10/2018 21:31

Can I join this place is a tip ? Can't log onto the site unfortunately and am not on facebook. Has anyone got a link I can follow?

HalloumiGus · 14/10/2018 19:45

@Olliander your bedroom looks lovely 😊

I am behind but drowning in work and study. Between TOMM and a weekly clean by cleaner we are staying afloat, just!

HalloumiGus · 14/10/2018 19:46

@Ollivander84 that last message should have said. Sigh. Autocorrect.
