The Organised Mum Method

IcanDorisIwillDoris · 02/09/2018 15:35

Does anyone fancy joining me in following the organised mum method?

Back to work tomorrow after the summer off (work term time only) and need to get on top of a house work routine after struggling this last year or so to stay on top of things.

I suffer with anxiety and can easily get lost in my mood without structure and I like what I saw on the website. Will probably tweek the method as I go but it's a good structured plan to kick things off.

I work odd hours around the kids being at school but have a clear hour each day to dedicate to this. Plus I am sick of losing my weekends to playing catch up when I could be doing nicer things with the kids!!

Four of us in a 4 bed semi which is clean, just full of stuff that comes with having kids. It can get pretty messy!

Have done the odd bit of decluttering over the summer which has made a bit of a difference!

Looking forward to having a house that doesn't embarrass me on the odd occasion a guest arrives unannounced Blush

I'm exhausted! Have done 2 loads of laundry, with more piled up ready to go in. Hoovered heavy traffic areas, made beds and done the bathroom. My Friday focus is the lounge so I spent half hour in there. Also had to empty the dishwasher and reload it and clean the surfaces in the kitchen. This was all done by 8.30am as well as popping to the shops and preparing some food for later. Am enjoying listening to the playlists too. Feeling knackered but also very tidy Smile

Neenook · 07/09/2018 08:51

Starting this today...bootcamping as much as I can today and over the weekend in the hopes to start properly on Monday.
The only problem is I work shifts - when I'm on nights it'll be ok, but on days I think it'll be hard to keep up. It tends to be when I've been on days that everything get out of control - any tips from fellow shift workers?

Gammeldragz · 07/09/2018 09:22

Bootcamp has begun! Came back from the school run and tackled coats (did shoes last week), now have two large bags of coats to donate! I'm not doing it in order, just thought I'd start closest to the door for now. Hoping to get quite a bit done today, definitely more than a day's worth as I only have school run to do today.

doleritedinosaur · 07/09/2018 09:22

I’ve managed to get most of the level 1 stuff done after an almost non day yesterday but the house is really showing the method is working.
Bathroom & kitchen are getting easier & faster to clean, all the other rooms are tidy & ive done most jobs by 9am.
I’m actually getting jobs done from the house to do list without hassle & I may finish painting the bathrooms by the time we go on holiday.

I just can’t get my oven spotless. Sad

@neenook not a shift worker myself but friends who are switch the days around so days they would struggle with are non housework days or the easier ones.

Gammeldragz · 07/09/2018 09:24

banana I'm tired just reading that!
Neenook I'll be on shifts next month and I just won't do those days and will use weekend days where I have to.
Anything is better than the barely anything I do now!

Ollivander84 · 07/09/2018 09:25

Day off for me today as I have to get myself ready and pack for a photoshoot tomorrow - I get home late tonight so don't have long!

Bobbiepin · 07/09/2018 10:04

I've missed two days now, just can't Hoover unless my DH gets home before baby goes to bed. I've got the level 1 tasks done but hallway and kitchen have been neglected a bit. Gotta get as much as I can done today.

Littlechocola · 07/09/2018 10:11

@Neenook I work shifts. I can get the level 1 tasks done but think I may have to delegate what I can’t do of level 2. Luckily my dc are older.
I failed badly on Bootcamp this week and only did the front room, hallway and bathroom but already they are easier to stay on top of. Washing is my down fall!
I am on leave soon and have guests coming so I need to get kitchen and bedroom in order. I’m ignoring dc rooms, they can live in squalor Grin

Gammeldragz · 07/09/2018 10:35

Have cleared out the drawers in the hallway, binned a bag off odd gloves and old hats and scarves. Currently taking a break from trying to re-home all the crap that had accumulated on the drawers. Most of it will be put in piles for the owners to deal with when they get home!

Distracted by deciding I need a nice hallway table/unit instead of the old painted chest of drawers we currently have there.

Now stuck under a cat...

Neenook · 07/09/2018 10:49

Littlechocola I'm exactly the same - one run of days, the washing builds up and the whole house descends into chaos. I'm hoping the routine will stop this from happening. My DC's are older too - 13 and 15, but not the tidiest boys...

HalloumiGus · 07/09/2018 11:06

I am cautiously optimistic that this is working. Did the Level 1 jobs only yesterday and I think seeing the place looking tidier makes a massive difference to motivation. Although DH had his arse handed to him last night when he made a mess of the hall after me cleaning the day before.

Got a wash on before I left the house and hoping to get away early today to have a few hours of sorting before weekend begins.

Littlechocola · 07/09/2018 11:11

@Neenook 2 of mine don’t see mess, one puts me to shame!

Auntpetunia2015 · 07/09/2018 11:13

I’ve got another agent coming today to take pics as first one has been useless. It’s onky taken me 1 hour to go all over the house prettying it up. I’m loving this system you can see the difference. It’s easier to keep clean and tidy on a day to day basis and a deep clean is now happening in every room. Will make it easier when I move out.

beela · 07/09/2018 11:16

I'm starting the bootcamp on Monday. But I had a go at our bedroom yesterday and will tackle the entrance hall this afternoon in preparation.

BlindAssassin1 · 07/09/2018 11:17

I'm giving this a go. I've tinkered with the order to fit work patterns and what not but I like it, its going ok.

Pretty sure the kitchen will take longer than the allocated time. But I think once I'm in the swing of it things will get quicker.

DH had his arse handed to him last night when he made a mess of the hall after me cleaning the day before. Sympathies HalloumiGus DP walked dirt through the hall I had only just cleaned. Why, why would you do that?!

I watched a short video on the TOM site of her clean sheet Tuesday to show how to get going. She does get her DC involved and said about her partner doing bits too. Also, her house seem clutter free. Which is where I fall down. Too much stuff despite my best efforts. Blush

comeagainforbigfudge · 07/09/2018 11:44

Put a wash on and did a small tidy today. Also went to gym induction and phoned to check my car insurance right for my job. Now to jump in shower as have 50 mins to get ready to go out for the day.

Procrastination is my middle name 😂

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 07/09/2018 12:42

So, it turns out you can clean the outside of my upstairs windows from inside! Who knew?! I've lived here for over a year and never cleaned them before today. Blush

mrsoutnumbered · 07/09/2018 14:05

@ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd haha! I've wondered about reaching out to clean, I think I could do it but it's a bit scary! Did you use any particular gadgets?

mrsoutnumbered · 07/09/2018 14:08

I don't think I need to do much for today's Friday Focus as I have no gardens or shed! I might spray a bit of weed killer and sweep the front, always get loads of litter and fag butts as we're on a busy road...

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 07/09/2018 14:14

No gadgets, it's the way the windows are made. You open them wide and the hinges sort of disconnect, so you can slide the frame along and reach round. Not well explained, I'm afraid!

I've also had a sort out in the playroom and DD room. Thrown out a load of plastic tat, hidden some more in the garage to see if anyone notices its absence before it goes to the charity shop. Very satisfying!

IcanDorisIwillDoris · 07/09/2018 14:16

Wow this thread is still busy, I apologise as I haven't had chance to catch up properly since my last post!

So I am pleased with the end of my first week. Haven't stuck to it rigidly as my darn knee is still playing up but my house is so different already.

The only job I need to do this weekend is make sure all uniform is washed/dried/ironed. A MASSIVE MASSIVE improvement!!!

Excited to find this thread. I found TOMM a while ago, I think from a thread on here. I have been doing it for months now but mainly in my head i realise Grin. Now everyone is back at school, I'm keen to get back to it in reality.

I was on the FB page but found it way too busy so had to switch it off. Checking in here would be good though.

Gammeldragz · 07/09/2018 14:35

Well I got massively carried away with my hallway tidying. I have...

  • sorted and chucked hats, scarves, gloves and coats.
  • recycled, binned and relocated all the crap from on top of the drawers.
  • cleaned the uPVC door, inside and out and inside windows.
  • swept out front and watered the dying olive tree.
  • cleaned skirtings and internal doors and including a million slats in the understair cupboard door
  • cleaned a million scuff marks off the walls and cleaned the radiator
  • vacuumed and mopped the floor
  • dusted the shoe racks and shoes
  • vacuumed the stairs

I was feeling really happy and pleased with myself when I'd nearly finished, until I remembered I live in a townhouse and have two more hallways! I vacuumed the one on the living level, but have had enough now. Need some energy left for school run and cooking dinner.

Also washed my kitchen bin and mopped the downstairs look, cleaned a few surfacsles in there. Kitchen looks awful though and so does the living room!

Oh well. It's something. All DH did before he left was moan I'd thrown out a cardboard box that had been languishing in the floor for months. Apparently he wanted it! If he dares to walk on that floor with dirty boots later I shall not be responsible for my actions!

Gammeldragz · 07/09/2018 14:37

Oh I'm also on 3rd load of laundry, two on the line.
I'm so glad I thought to buy wine this week, I feel I've earned it!

HalloumiGus · 07/09/2018 15:09

A 5 min sit down after two solid hours of decluttering toys, books and clothes then massive bedroom hoovering and rearranging. I've managed to set off a twinge of sciatica. #oldgimmer Now just have to get the charity shop bags all hidden in car boot before anyone else comes home!
