September fledgling roll call: Ready, Set, FLY....

HillsBesideTheSea · 01/09/2018 08:25

Yes this is the bonkers back to school thread. We welcome you to jump aboard for the ride. We are following the Fly lady system for taming the chaos (can't have anyone over syndrome). We are at various levels and there is NO obligation to follow it to the letter (we've installed a bar in the naughty corner for hanging out and relaxing when needed)

4 levels for flying:
Baby steps - good for finding a routine in the tasks and getting over the perfection crippling effect
Baby steps and missions - yep basic routine and more in depth tasks
Baby steps, missions, and deep cleaning - can't clean clutter so don't consider this one if you need the next level
Flying combined with a decluttering system (kondo/unfuck etc etc) lets be honest fly lady is good for routine but not so quick with the decluttering results sometimes.

So ground rules, yes ground rules it is September:

  1. Newbies - we are a long running but friendly bunch. We try not to seem clicky but it doesn't always come across as some of us have known each other on here for a long time, just join the chatter and you'll soon be a fledgling
  2. There is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's.

Linkies will be posted daily and will appear shortly. Until then, jump on board, enjoy the ride and there are still hammocks, sand, comfy seats, cushions, blankies and a full English on the naughty corner bar it is a Saturday morning, breakfast is earnt

Ta da
Hung washing up
Cleaned the bathrooms
Picked the dc up
Cooked dinner
Tidied up after dinner
Got dc to bed early

Unfortunately ds still shouting and crying because he has decided he wants to sleep in our bed not his Hmm. Leaving him to it for a bit now as think he's just over tired and worked himself up. He never sleeps in our bed so it's just one of those totally random things he has decided to have a tantrum about.

I'll be able to finally relax after he has settled down!

Oh and we have water back although it is slightly discoloured now Confused. Have given the dc milk to drink instead just in case but I'm sure it'll be fine for a Brew

Cagliostro · 20/09/2018 19:05

Euww at the water 💧

Dinner finishing off in the oven. Caglets sorted their shoes finally. Really really need to sort out the long cupboard downstairs as that is meant to be the go to area for organising all our club stuff and I think that will have a knock on effect to general organisation - the plan being that the Caglets can pack their bags the night before, and if that encourages me to follow suit, I would for example have noticed last night about the bank card and could’ve made alternative plans. We’ve got a bit complacent with travel as we are walking distance to town and supermarkets now.

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/09/2018 20:59

If you have any doubt either avoid drinking it or boil it. Perhaps check your water authority website site? foxes

We got partially flooded earlier, just enough to stop the roads working but hopefully no significant damage to property. I drove past ds on the way back from shopping and was waiting with a clean towel and hot bath for him. (bonus mum point) but he is annoyed because I shouted at him at 7:45 to find about about homework and woke him up (minus mum points). Guess he is still not over the bug.

3 batches of stuff done today, kitchen almost tamed afterwards. uniform in washer (which is the 2nd load tonight). I am about to head for bed as I have the tireds.

Cag, I have dinner / lunch out with each DC or both together once a week while the other does an activity or we are waiting to go in. Totally agree that while it is an added expense it is worth the money in autumn and winter. We do a packed tea at the other two activities so I think we can justify it.

Miles behind with the thread. I couldn’t get MN to load for some reason. You would think that meant I got loads done... nope Hmm.

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/09/2018 21:01

Actually I am really pleased with 2 of the batches because they are the major mess makers: cottage pie and lasagne. Even if I need to make a littler extra potato tomo to finish one off. Blush

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 20/09/2018 21:04

Oh no, missed the last few posts and so didn’t see be but about the water foxes, the bank card Cag and this flooding Hills Shock.

Re. the water foxes, we have had our water cut off a couple of times and each time it came back discoloured. One time we were advised it was safe to use and another that we needed to boil it before drinking any.

Our supplier is actually not bad at keeping facebook, Twitter and their website up to date when there are any updates to give. Definitely agree with Hills that it is worth checking the website.

Cagliostro · 20/09/2018 21:46

Thanks stressy I think it’ll remain a habit, there is also the soft play nearby but I haven’t tried it yet. Also not sure about the age limit as DD is 11 but she would be playing with baby rather than barrelling round herself (although I must say she has always been super careful of little ones in playgrounds and soft play etc). Actually I’ll ask now on our local SEN group

Ended up an ok evening considering. Started sorting the shoes, got another load of laundry done, bathed the baby after she got tomato on the back of her neck 🤔 and read to the Caglets.

Bowerbird5 · 21/09/2018 05:49

Hi,
Woken for loo and sore ankle. Took a tumble before work in garden. Spent morning in A&E and have sprained ankle and fractured wrist. They have splinted it instead of cast hmm.

I ended up back on meds because I was waking too early then feeling shit about 2 pm at school.

No flying done. Did manage Everhot demo though. Very yummy and feel confident cooking when I get it. Felt a bit guilty about going but DH dropped me at door and they had a lift inside door and a chair was waiting when I hobbled in. They are so lovely in there. It is a family company and customer service is their priority. We have another family business in the city too which is just as good. The food was amazing especially a cake she made with fruit, nuts and rose water. Mmm. I snuck an extra piece for my coffee break this morning. I'm off work for possibly a couple of weeks according to very young Dr.

Plan for today to go through RBC and sort hopefully chuck some out. Direct cleaning and washing from my sofa with foot elevated.
Will catch up with you all later.

Bowerbird5 · 21/09/2018 05:51

Sorry about flooding and water hills and foxes. Couldn't find the posts.

stegosauruslady · 21/09/2018 07:33

Oh yuck...bower that sounds painful!

I have been up since 5am again, this baby had better get the hang of sleeping by the time he is born! I do not enjoy being woken up by having my bladder and ribs kicked simultaneously!

DP's health problems seem to be having a bit of a spike again, he was a grumpy arse last night because of it. Hopefully he will have a long lie in and feel better!

My younger two have an inset day today and we are looking after my friend's two (home ed) kids as she is in hospital with their older brother. So, who knows how much of my list will get done today!

To do...
Shower and clean bathroom
Wash all of the kids' bedding
15mins bedroom tidy
Clean out bag and find CEX voucher
Dishes
Dinner
Move cat litter to bathroom as boycat has been spraying by the tray
Shampoo carpet!

Have half an hour indulgence of some sort. It will make you feel better.

Spreadingcudweed · 21/09/2018 11:58

Hello, Sweaty Betty checking in!

Another disturbed night - stormy and windy - but fell asleep about 3 am this time , and woke up at 6.30 am feeling like a new woman! Just shows it is the quality not quantity of sleep that counts!

Oh dear Bower so sorry about the injuries. A fall is always a shock to the system so agree with Zoo and others, pls take it steady Flowers [single malt for later]

Funnily enough Zoo I was thinking of trying squash muffins today too as I am a bit sick of the soup (which is delicious but I make it rather too frequently) and we have a glut of squashes, courtesy of our country neighbours. Ditto courgette cake! Good luck with appts/meetings today!

Good Lord Steg you are looking after the world and his wife, never mind growing a feisty bump! Hope someone is looking after you! Brew Cake

Hope water ok now Foxes

Glad your day ended better than it started yesterday Cag it's always cheering to achieve a late run I find! Grin Hope bank card reappears!

Cheery wing flaps to Toostressy and everyone else!

OK - so after a maudlin week - I am beginning to see a chink of progress. Things were so bad when I arrived home after the hols that I was terribly despondent. But after 3.5 days of plugging away slowing but solidly, I am starting to see the wood for the trees so that I can continue with the declutter proper.

Anyone else always forget that September is a bit of a right-off in terms of making proper progress because one is tied up with new school/back to work/getting house back in order after hols? It's like I never get going properly after Christmas until 1st Feb! Or maybe it is just me ... Blush Blush anyway ....

There are heaps and heaps of washing still to do (because dh has been travelling and hasn't had time to keep up) and more bed linen to come (still haven't entirely caught up with post-summer visitor glut)

But the kitchen is clean and tidy. All evidence of mouse has been obliterated and swabbed with Dettol and every single bit of food is sealed in plastic or plastic boxes. Traps and poison are producing good results! Still one big shelf of clutter to sort (but need to sort pantry downstairs first to free up space and then I will do that). Also need to renew and clean spice shelves before Christmas. Sort cutlery (need new sets). And sort area above fridge and buy new fridge/freezer.

The laundry is triaged and in neat piles waiting to be put in. The ironing is up to date (although I can't claim that I did that; the fortnightly ironing lady was a star this week!).

And all the laundry related things (and shoes and bags and BRC) that dh and dd had strung about the ground floor are waiting to be washed or have been put away upstairs. As have all the woollens that were washed and ironed over the summer.

And ppssttt don't tell anyone but I have secretly and guiltily sent 15 of dh's formal business suits and other formal attire off to the laundry banking on him not noticing.

The bathroom is ok.

My Barnet Fair has been chopped. I have re-started gynae appts - have been to one - and have another booked for early Oct. I have been to one residency meeting and know what to do re: next steps.

Have second mammogram booked (first one wasn't clear enough).

I have cooked and am in the process of cooking food for weekend.

DD has started decluttering one drawer of art cupboard downstairs. Still lots more to do but process has begun! Why hey!

The boudoir is my next task!

After all that (ie getting the basics back under control) I can continue the thorough jettisoning process so this house is ready to rent/sell/renovate whatever we decide post-Brexit.

2nd floor I am ignoring for the most part - it is cluttered/untidy - but clean. I will get there eventually.

A large part of the above achieved thanks, as ever, to this thread and the support it provides!

So ta very much everyone for putting up with my whinging (as ever) and for the encouragement Bear Biscuit Flowers

Onwards!

Spreadingcudweed · 21/09/2018 12:00

Cagliostro · 21/09/2018 12:12

Great lists!

Goodness bower sounds painful.

SC totally agree about back to school time being a write off. Even though we don’t do actual school it is still definitely A Thing!

We had the first proper (as in money making - although not many people again due to start of term) sports club since the move today. I even joined in a bit (I am quite good at shooting hoops). Must dig out a notebook to keep a proper record of all our teaching income. Although it was very windy and chilly and DS fell over and whacked his knee bless him (he hardly ever cries so it must have really hurt) so we came back early. They’ve done enough to get their Blue Peter sport badge though - an hour of lacrosse - so need to get the stuff printed for that. DH will be back soon. Oh there he is now in fact :o

Must do home ed and tidying after lunch.

Bowerbird5 · 21/09/2018 12:18

Wow! SC an amazing list.

Yes, was wondering what he did as a job with 15 business suits! Thought he must be like my cousin. Walk in wardrobe, size of DD 's room.
Mum shown around house. " Goodness, did you buy the whole shop! " He goes to Hong Kong twice a year to order them. He's an electrician but he does own the business and does big events like music festivals etc.

I have taken the week off work next week then see how I am on Friday as he said "TA's are on their feet a lot so you need to rest." Young Dr.

Spreadingcudweed · 21/09/2018 12:20

Good luck Zoo Flowers

Hope ds ok Cag but well done re: sports club! My dh also due home any moment!

Forgot to say also scrubbed fridge to within an inch of its life (and kitchen bin and recycling bins and bathroom bin).

Spreadingcudweed · 21/09/2018 12:22

No I doubt dh has 15 business suits Bower - must check - but he does get his shirts made in HK funnily enough. Chap comes over every year to measure up and take orders. Then they arrive a couple of months later! Cheaper than Thomas Pink anyway!

Spreadingcudweed · 21/09/2018 12:23

Glad you are resting Bower!

Cagliostro · 21/09/2018 12:30

DS seems pretty much ok now thanks. Having a restful afternoon anyway just doing home ed.

Found the fucking bank card. On. The. Table. Which is still a hotspot (just not as bad as before we moved). Fucksake. So we could’ve gone yesterday. I mean we saved, what £40ish so that’s something, and we did have a decent evening, but FFS I’m an idiot. I swear I looked all over the table.

I’ve realised I really need to work with DH to get more home ed stuff set up that they can get on with if I’m feeding baby. I’m in bed with her ATM and hoping to get her into her cot for a nap but in the meantime I don’t have anything the Caglets could be getting on with. I can be a bit controlling about what work they’re doing and really need to step back, I get so anxious about them doing the right stuff, but DH has great ideas too.

No idea what we are doing about lunch either. Or dinner. Sigh. Back to ballet as well today (we weren’t well enough to take DD last week) but at least DH can do that.
