Twiglett · 31/05/2007 18:16

actually if you are NotanOtter I don't want to know

popsycal · 31/05/2007 18:17

otter - are you deliberately buying in bulk?!??!?!

Twiglett · 31/05/2007 18:18

£295 .. how long will that last?

I have posted mine on another thread in this section

Otter · 31/05/2007 18:18

popsycal - i do exactly what you say and infact blend it so that big and small children do not moan at the ridiculous veg i put in - i made 12 meals an froze them all at the weekend! job done!

TWIG!!!
My children are on half term
children love cucumber
i have 5 children

Twiglett · 31/05/2007 18:20

here you go .. this is mine .. I got a £10 off voucher

Quattrocento · 31/05/2007 18:20

Otter - how many little otters are there? You must be feeding at least 10 people for a month! Why do otters need 14 packs of salted butter?

Otter · 31/05/2007 18:20

yes i am Popsycal

I have reduced our food bill HUGELY over the past year by simply NOT going to the supermarket often
fruit veg and milk will have to be bought again - but this shop will do us 7 for best part of a month
(( thats why i buy cravendale milk - long date)

Otter · 31/05/2007 18:21

5 small and not so small otters - 2 big !

Great name Quattrocento

Quattrocento · 31/05/2007 18:22

This is the reduced food bill?

(faints)

Quattrocento · 31/05/2007 18:29

Thank you otter

Printing out your shopping list to show my DH.

"Look" I will say "here's a weekly shopping bill".

I will say nothing about the three extra children. Or the half term week.

He never does shopping but it doesn't stop him somehow thinking that there are lots of ways I should be more economical.

Otter · 31/05/2007 18:32

thats not weekly!!

MerryMarigold · 31/05/2007 18:33

Money saving tips:

Put veg in with curries/ bol etc. eg. macaroni and cauliflower cheese
chilli with kidney beans (buy dried, v v v cheap)
burgers with kidney beans
thai curry with mange tout or green beans

if kids won't eat the veg, give them the leftovers for breakfast and save on the muesli!

Otter · 31/05/2007 18:35

fab marigold

popsycal · 31/05/2007 18:35

oh yes...in anything using mince, eg chilli, spa bol, lasagne, i grate tons of carrot really finely in with it - bulks it out and sweetens it

Quattrocento · 31/05/2007 18:37

Oh sorry - just read that was the best part of a month - all makes sense now - thought you were the queen of shopping otters.

Ceolas · 31/05/2007 18:40

Otter - too much sweet stuff and juice in mine???

OP posts:
wannaBe · 31/05/2007 18:50

if you're having roast chicken then you can make gravy with the meat juices so no need for gravy granules.

make own spagbol with onions/tinned tomatoes/dried mixed herbs.

make own burgers

make tomato sauce and freeze for your dd.

You can cut back hugely if you really want to, shop bought sauces for instance are hugely expensive and full of all sorts of additives.

Ceolas · 31/05/2007 19:26

OK so thicko question - how do I do the gravy just with the chicken juices?

The meat issue - yes I feel we eat too much. Would like to have 2 or 3 meatless meals in a week. But I'm worried about DD2 and her protein. She's also allergic to nuts and lentils. If we have meals with no meat and no dairy that would effectively be vegan, IYSWIM? Not sure how to get round it.

I AM making my own spag bol!

Mercy · 31/05/2007 19:47

Ceolas, this is a bit long winded but see here for how to make gravy.

Fish and eggs are also good sources of protein.

How old is your dd?

Mercy · 31/05/2007 19:49

And tofu!

Ceolas · 31/05/2007 20:18

DD is 5, nearly 6.

Fish. Yes, I hate fish but everyone else likes it!

OP posts:
Otter · 31/05/2007 20:38

mine is 4 weeks worth - no juice is there?

Ceolas · 31/05/2007 20:42

Ok no juice.

But oreos, ice cream, ice lollies...

What do your kids drink? We should do fruit juice/water but it's a lot more expensive. They drink juice at meal times and water/milk in between.

OP posts:
Otter · 31/05/2007 20:42

just 100% fresh
