My Washing Machine Takes 4hrs and My Mop Leaves My Floors Hairy

Having a bit of a domestic drama at the moment - moved into a new flat and the washing machine takes around 4 hours to wash on the 40/60 degree cotton cycle, and tends to be the same duration on every other cycle! Does anyone have advice on how to cut down the wash time on an LG 7kg Direct Drive?

It does have a 30 min daily cycle but I'm always dubious about the quality of wash on the quick cycles, and wouldn't feel comfortable washing towels/bathmats/bed linen at anything less than 60 (unless someone can convince me it'll be ok!)

The other issue I have is with mops - I've tried about 20 different mops, but I have a hairy DH. I vacuum before I mop, but then the mop somehow leaves hair behind so I have to vacuum again. I've tried washing the mop (obviously) but have no idea how the hair even gets trapped in there in the first place! Does anyone have any advice on how to mop without having to vacuum afterwards?? I hate cleaning the floor on my hands and knees (I have a bad back).

Sorry for the insanely boring post...

Long wash times are unfortunately a draw back on modern machines. Could you perhaps post a pic of the machines control’s so we can see what the functions are like? Do you have the model number?

As for mops, I absolutely love my Vileda flat mop. It’s microfibre and works brilliantly. I also bought extra cloths for it so it’s like using a new mop every time. You don’t mop in lines with it like a normal mop, it’s meant to be used in a figure-8 movement like a commercial mop

I use the daily 59 mins wash on my machine - no issues! And it can do said wash at 60 Smile

Thank you for getting back to me! I've attached a picture of the controls of my washing machine (my phone doesn't take the best pictures, so sorry about the quality!).

With the Quick 30 the maximum temperature it allows me to set it to is 40 degrees (which is super annoying).

I'm not entirely sure what the model number is, as the labels are all in Arabic!

Also, thank you for the mop recommendation! I haven't tried that one yet, but I've tried similar designs - my main problem was that bits of fluff would still be left behind (but maybe that's because they were lower quality).

Have a look at the manual

www.lg.com/hk_en/img/support/WF-1006MW_Owner's%20manual.pdf

Not sure if that link will work but it easy to google

Looks like you could do shorter washes

That's a good idea - I'll look for the manual online, as the one you provided is for a slightly different model. Unfortunately my washing machine doesn't have any displays so it doesn't give me any indication of how long it's going to take (really frustrating once it's already been going for 5 hours with no indication of ever stopping!).

I think maybe putting less detergent in and having fewer items may speed it up a little...?

You don't need to wash all those things at 60! I do 30/40 on the whole and we've survived.......

Lightlover2018 · 06/05/2018 06:24

I wash everything on the 28 minutes Daily cycle. It's also a max of 40 degrees. All fine.

Op, we can be hairy in my house. I too vacuum before cleaning the floor. You may not want to or be able to do this, but i clean my floors by hand and do lots of rinsing. Clean a bit, rinse, clean a bit, rinse. I have a knee pad from a garden store to save my knees on the hard tiles!

picklemepopcorn · 06/05/2018 07:24

I have started doing smaller loads on the quick wash cycle. It's been fine!

Very little needs to hot washed, I do everything at 40 but every now and then do a hot wash for the whites and towels. It's worked fine.

As for the floor, you want a fresh mop cover every time, and do a sort of sweep movement so you are always moving in one direction. If you pull the mop back, it deposits the hair again. You keep moving in the same direction and all the hair stays with the mop until right at the end. You can then remove the cover, scoop up the last little bit where you finish, and shove it in the washing machine.

Thank you for your replies everyone!

The mop thing has been infuriating me for a while now - I think as picklemepopcorn suggested it may be my crappy mopping technique rather than the mop (my mum didn't own a mop, she just made us kids clean the floor with a flannel instead Grin).

I think I've been overly paranoid about cooler washes, will definitely go for the 40 degree option with a hot wash once a month instead as the long washing machine cycles are killing me!
