To wonder how on earth DH has stained brand new pillowcases this badly overnight??

DH and I got home yesterday from holiday, and as a treat I bought a lovely new set of bed sheets for us to sleep in last night.
However, this morning DH has just got out of bed and this is the state of the sheet and pillowcases! He showered before he came to bed, we both got a bit hot in the night but my pillowcases are spotless.

Seriously... how the hell has he managed that?

I'd say he's very dehydrated...like a pp said, sweat can change colour the same as urine does.

CookPassBabtridge · 26/04/2018 09:06

Yep, it's just man sweat. DP goes to bed clean and wakes up stinking and sweaty, sometimes even soaked through. It smells so gross. It's soaked through to the pillows so they all have a yellowish tinge. Thankfully it's not an everyday thing!

Is your husband Donald Trump?

Whatever it is, my husband’s head does the same. He knows this happens and he has taken to using a small towel on top of the pillowcase. We also have tried the linings you put under the pillow case as it can go through to the pillow. It’s a real nuisance. It seems to be a male thing tho.

RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl · 26/04/2018 09:14

Well it's just sweat isn't it? Could he be diabetic however? That's ringing a faint bell with me

But it'll just be because he's disgustingly sweaty and he probably can't help that

PlatypusPie · 26/04/2018 09:14

My husband says he is like a night storage heater in reverse - kicks out lots of heat in the night. His pillows look a bit like that after a few days,so usually change his case twice a week and the pillow protector weekly. It’s something that only really became noticeable after he started to lose his hair and cut the rest very short. He isn’t a very sweaty person otherwise, and always has a nice clean, soapy smell but I think he doesn’t wash his scalp as vigorously as he did when he was washing hair.

I often look at those sumptuous beds on magazines , Pinterest et al and know its a look that can never be achieved long term. When my husband gets into the bed previously ironed white or pale cotton sheets and pillow cases are wrestled with , folded over and look wrecked after just one night. When he is away on business ,i just have to slide out of the bed and pull the cover up. I only buy cheap pillows now so that I can replace them more often .To me that looks like some scalp problem .have seen it for years with my Dad.

Justaboy · 26/04/2018 09:15

LTB! its the only way!

Abzs · 26/04/2018 09:16

My dh's side of the bed is exactly the same. My mil changed the bed to help when I was ill after ds was born and declared it inherited from his father. Mine also refuses pyjamas, so the duvet and mattress topper also have to washed more often than if it was just me.
I've found a prewash with shampoo helps get out the scalp grease.

We're just shimmying this thread over to Housekeeping at the request of the OP. Hope they wash OK, OP!

Does he dribble when he sleeps? My dh had a patch like this on his pillow although not as big. He was dribbling and his tooth was slightly bleeding

MrsHathaway · 26/04/2018 09:28

We have these covers. Originally bought as a kind of joke, intending to use the tartan side, but actually we've both slightly fallen in love with the daft stags.

It's a cotton blend but sort of brushed so super soft.

I change DH's pillowcases all the bloody time - sweat plus gel plus morning-not-evening shower. TBH it's just as easy to chuck them in any time I ever do a load, and then put the pillow protectors in when I do a white load. I don't reserve pillowcases for specific bedding loads, as they mainly just want rinsing through so don't need mega hot or anything.

MrsHathaway · 26/04/2018 09:31

Ooh and I'm reminded that we've wishlisted a cooling gel pillow insert.

TooTrueToBeGood · 26/04/2018 09:38

If it were sweat you would think the sheets would be stained as well. How is his dental health? Could it be saliva mixed with blood - an indication of serious gum disease or other dental issues?

RumerGodden · 26/04/2018 09:38

some people make a lot of "adult cradle cap" - one of my kids still gets this...even older, i have to olive oil and comb/scrape his head every 6months to remove. Is your hubby a very ear waxxy person? It's the same sort of thing, extra sebum and that yellowish-waxy oil, so it stains when it sweats off.

make him wear a cotton bathing cap to bed to catch the stain?

Ellie56 · 26/04/2018 09:39

Definitely man sweat.

It will wash out with biological wash powder.

wobblebot · 26/04/2018 09:43

Does he smoke or take pain killers?
When I've had opiate based pain relief I stain the pillows slightly.
I also remember my father, who smoked, stained many pillowcases throughout my childhood!

mrsm43s · 26/04/2018 09:51

My husband does this - although not to that level, it takes a good few days for a noticeable yellow tinge to build up.

Personally I use cheap plain white bedding, so that I can hot wash/bleach/soak the pillowcases, and frequently replace them, without having to buy a whole new bed set. I also use pillow protectors which I frequently change/wash to protect the pillows themselves.

If I were you, I'd just buy a couple more sets of the plain duck egg blue pillowcases, and get him to change his top pillowcase daily (or every other day if it's clean enough to turn over and use the other side).

I've no idea what it actually is - I presume just head sweat - but it's definitely something that some people (usually men) seem to do and others don't, and I don't think there's any way of stopping it.

AngeloMysterioso · 26/04/2018 11:56

Well I’ve gone and bought the vanish scrunchy stuff and the prewash stuff. If it doesn’t come out I’ll cry!

OMG I thought i was the only one with a sweaty OH and stained pillowcases! Bit relieved to know it's somewhat common and there's (probably) not something seriously wrong with him. OH is early thirties but still gets acne breakouts so I think it's definitely excess sebum that causes the staining. Might try to get him to exfoliate a bit and see if that helps.

Oh god I shouldn't have read this at lunchtime 😭😷
