Hello everyone,

We thought you might be interested in a free trial of a new brand called smol, who deliver super concentrated laundry capsules to your door. For just £1 postage, smol will send you nine free capsules so you can give them a try.

Smol capsules are, well, small and they're delivered in special compact packaging too, meaning they will fit through your letterbox and take up less cupboard space. Both bio and non-bio detergent options are available and all of their packaging is 100% recyclable.

Just tell smol how many capsules you use per wash, and how many washes you do per week, and they will work out how often you should receive their 24 pack. After your free trial, a pack of 24 capsules costs just £3.85 - up to 50% cheaper than major brands - and delivery is free. Your first regular delivery will arrive 10 days after your free trial, but you can skip a delivery or cancel at any time.

Claim your nine free washes here.

Mumsnet carries some affiliate marketing links, so if you buy something through our posts, we may get a small share of the sale (more details here).

Received mine yesterday and just put a wash on this morning. Not hugely impressed with the packaging - won't survive long I don't think - if it can't be used until the end of time without having to be replaced I would prefer it to be something other than plastic.

The "less/fewer chemicals" thing is a bit ambiguous too. Are they claiming to be eco friendly? I need more information on what they're actually claiming.

I HATE those peel back instruction labels that are on most medicine bottles which require you to spend 15 minutes peeling back a corner to reveal the instructions underneath. There's more than enough room on the box to fit all the info on.

Do info about using fabric softener?! I've put some in anyway.

And can't be used on wool or silk. Is that normal?!

Anyway, they're far too expensive for me to consider at the moment. The wash is still going but unless it comes out smelling and feeling utterly incredible they haven't impressed me enough to consider buying.

What a terrible brand name

“smol” as a word is all over the internet with the yoof. Used instead of “small” and normally to describe animals. Also sounds Scandinavian to me so I think it’s a perfect brand name!

Mine just arrived this morning - can’t wait to try them.

Mine arrived this morning. I trialled both the bio and non bio. They both smell very nice and the pods are indeed smaller than usual brands.

On 2nd wash with the bio. They wash well, and the washing smells fresh (purposefully left fabric softener out to see how the do on their own), will know how well and fresh when the laundry dries.

Tire Yes completely normal not to use standard detergents on wool or silk.

Also looks like any money saving/how much would depend on your normal brand. I’m too attached to my normal brand to switch to Smol permanently I think, but would be happy to use them alongside.

Huh, I ran out of Woolite a while ago and have been using my Aldi stuff on the handwash setting. I must have been lucky - will get some proper stuff next week then!

Not hugely impressed with the wash - some really basic, fresh stains haven't come out of a couple of the kid's t shirts.

Tire

It’s more to do with the enzymes in “bio” detergents I believe, because enzymes are designed to break down or “digest” protein stains, egg, sweat etc. They can also digest wool (hair is a protein) and silk (again a protein).

Other issue is brighteners which are found in both bio and non bio.

You’ll probably not notice any difference in a few washes and if I am being truthful I have used a normal detergent on wool, but it is normal for them to state not to use on wool or silk.

What a shame it hasn’t got some fresh stains out, to be honest my laundry wasn’t stained, I’m part tempted to stain something to test, but I won’t 😀

TireSwing · 22/04/2018 05:56

@e1y1 - thanks for the explanation! I don't generally use bio but also tend to do wool washes on such a low temp would the enzymes work properly anyway?

e1y1 · 22/04/2018 06:05

@TireSwing, no worries. Ah that would make sense then, out of the 2main types of detergent, non bio is the better for wool, and you’re right, I think enzymes work better in warm water (40 or 50 degree), unless technology has moved on so they work in cooler water.

muppetisacat · 22/04/2018 06:16

Bio tabs work best on cool temperatures I think - temperatures over 40 (over body temp) mean the enzymes break down and don’t work so use bio tabs on cool washes (thereby saving energy).

Non-bio tabs need higher temperatures to work well 😊

BiddydeBint · 22/04/2018 09:40

Mine arrived yesterday, I'll have to wait for a full load of washing to build up

TireSwing · 22/04/2018 11:05

If my GCSE Biology served me correctly they work best between 35-40 degrees (37 is body temp so optimal). Mine are cool washes tho. What an exciting bunch we are ☺️

e1y1 · 22/04/2018 21:00

We certainly are!

And Biddy has come along to brag that she is at the bottom of her washing basket 🤣

Mooismum · 26/06/2018 13:29

Couldn't you sign up then cancel immediately once you've received your free trial?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 04/07/2018 20:57

I got an email after signing up, I emailed first to cancel. For a reply fairly quickly saying they can’t cancel before the trial is sent out as it can affect the trial being sent or something but, they did extend my trial to 20 days instead.

Al87 · 17/11/2018 21:41

This is a good product and great concept. I got exactly the correct amount of tabs delivered a few days before I need them. They fit through the letter box and have had no issues. Unfortunately I've had to cancel my subscription as I have been ridiculously itchy since I started using them and have rewashed all my clothes and bedding with old powder and itching has gone away. Not sure what is in them but it was horrendous experience for my skin

I tried these, really liked them. They arrived quickly however, I did not consider the fact we have a smaller than average letterbox so I had to collect from my sorting office. Because of this, and also because I've gone back to power, I cancelled. Found the packaging a bit faffy and hard to open but I did like the scent and the results.
