Anyone not have a dishwasher?

Just wondering how on earth can you keep a sink shiny without a dishwasher? I don't have room for one but unfortunately and I can't even remember a time when my sink and/or drainer weren't piled high with dirty/dryingg dishes. Can't see how it's possible unless you spend nearly all of your day surgically attached to either the sink or a tea towel!!!

I never dry the dishes, leave them to dry, it doesn't take long, maybe half an hour.

zookeeper if we ever get our own house we will have one of those racks, I like always having the plates to hand.

MrsSpoon · 07/05/2007 18:26

Yes, those are fab zookeeper, I like them, even for the items that come out of the dishwasher it saves you giving them the once over with a teatowel. (That's another little job for DH we need to cut the bottom out of the cupboard with the racks in it as for some reason they provided the racks but not the hole in the bottom of the cupboard .)

I dont have a dishwasher or a tumble drier and we only have 1 radiator on in the house. we only spend £60 per month on electricity with a card meter. It is more to save money than anthing but we are energy saving too!

TLV · 07/05/2007 18:44

I have a spanking new dishwasher but its not been used yet as we only have 2 plates and little bit cutlery so I refuse to use it till i have a new dining set also wanted some water softner but couldn't find any in tescos

A tumble drier uses between 2.4 and 4 kwh per cycle according to my fast and dirty research on the web.

A steam iron uses about 2.5 kwh per hour.

So if you tumble dry and don't iron, that would be around the same energy consumption as line drying and ironing for an hour.

Just a thought

schneebly, i am shocked at the amount you have to pay a month on electricity on a card meter, especially without a tumble-dryer or dishwasher. £60 is a vast amount of money.

I have a meter too, but use less than half that amount. I know the size of house makes a difference, but still i suppose we can only ever be in one room at a time, no matter how big or small the house is.

stleger · 07/05/2007 23:08

My Bosch dishwasher is great, my whirlpool oven is great, please do not ask me about my zanussi fridge freezer!

expatinscotland · 07/05/2007 23:09

I don't.

God, I fucking miss those.

cece · 07/05/2007 23:09

schneebly

OMG your electricity bill is enormous. We pay £56 per month for gas and electricity and I have a tumble drier which I use all winter (a lot) and sometimes in summer!! No dishwasher though

It came from an internet place in Dublin that closed down - it had a great website promising everything, but they charged my credit card before they had stock in, and they couldn't give a delivery time. It is a great machine though!

schneebly · 08/05/2007 08:19

OMg really?? I had no idea as it is less than a couple of relatives who live in the same houses. We recently got it down from about £80 to £60 per month and I thought we were doing well! WE dont have gas - we are all electric but even then!! It is a fair sized 3 bedroom semi but we only use 2 of the bedrooms. Dont know how we can get it down any more. We do leave 2 lights on all night but that is for DS1 to use the toilet if needs be as he cant reach hte switch yet.

Ah, but Iota, you can iron much much more than one drier-load of clothes in an hour. And the iron is 2.5 kwh per HOUR, whereas the tumble drier is per CYCLE - my drier (hardly ever used) takes at least 1 hour and nearer 2 hours for many types of load. And the 2.5 kwh for the iron is at the lower end of the 2.4-4 kwh for the drier - many driers will be using nearer the 4.4 or even higher per cycle.

So I would still go with the line-drying and ironing every time. Especially since some clothes still need ironing about being in the drier!

chopchopbusybusy · 08/05/2007 12:49

My DH talked me into buying a dishwasher about ten years ago - I had never been very keen and took the view that it would take just as long to load and unload the dishwasher as it would to hand wash the dishes - not true!! When it gave up a couple of years ago it was replaced immediately.

MrsSpoon - when selecting our self catering holiday I discounted all the accommodation without a dishwasher - you are so right - I'm not going on holiday to wash dishes.

schneebly · 08/05/2007 13:23

speccy - thanks for the link! Will definitely make use of it!

MrsSpoon · 08/05/2007 15:59

LOL, too right it's a Bosch too as I'm not going on holiday for it to break down either!

Shneebly we pay a similar amount on our electricity meter, if not more. They are horribly expensive, so I'd advise having it removed if possible.

We don't have a dishwasher and tbh I find they are sometimes just as much work as washing the dishes mnually. We don't have a tumble drier, and I put clothes away unironined and iron as and when we need to. Much better than ironing a mountain of things only to take somethig out of a drawer and find it crumpled again!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 08/05/2007 18:57

Kerrymum - my dishwasher is an AEG. I had it from Boots.com ; decent price and Advantage points. Had my washing machine from them too.
