Anyone not have a dishwasher?

Just wondering how on earth can you keep a sink shiny without a dishwasher? I don't have room for one but unfortunately and I can't even remember a time when my sink and/or drainer weren't piled high with dirty/dryingg dishes. Can't see how it's possible unless you spend nearly all of your day surgically attached to either the sink or a tea towel!!!

My dh was so sure we didn't need one, so I let him do all the washing up. Now we have one and he would sell his grandmother (if he had one) to replace it. Can't live without it. Fabulous invention.

And I want to marry my tumble dryer. Have been trying to be eco-friendly and dry on the line. All the clothes are like cardboard and horribly creased so you have to iron them, which is torture.

Wotzsaname · 06/05/2007 18:39

Depends if you use it less than full.

pointydog · 06/05/2007 18:40

don't have one, won't have one, but I maybe don't care too much about having a showroom kitchen.

pointydog · 06/05/2007 18:41

I've used dishwashers on hol and those machines chunter away for over an hour. How can that be less water?

Aloha · 06/05/2007 18:44

Does though. It's because they spray water on the stuff instead of soak it. Like the difference between baths and showers.

I;ve read the results of your firkling, drunken, thank you.

I don't wash 140 dirty items that have been drying and hardening for two hours, though. I diss that test.

"However, Stamminger didn't examine the considerable amount of energy and materials required to make and transport the dishwasher. He also didn't consider the environmental impact of the detergents. For example, many dishwasher tablets use phosphates to help with anti-scaling which then contribute to the process of eutrophication, whereby over-production of algae in water leads to lack of oxygen for aquatic life."....

I think it is hard to get a balanced view, but these are the reasons I am put off having a dishwasher, environmentally speaking...

but for a showroom kitchen I can understand, plus if I had a large family, and maybe if I was working full time...

potoroo · 06/05/2007 18:57

The water in the dishwasher is recycled several times throughout the wash.

Only the modern ones use less water than handwashing. And its got to be a good one - pref AAA rating.

Check out any of the big online stores - they will tell you typical water consumption.

ggglimpopo · 06/05/2007 18:59

Given the choice between a dishwasher and a husband - I would probably go for the former.

RTKangaMummy · 06/05/2007 19:01

I haven't got an ELECTRICAL DISHWASHER BUT I have got a very HANDSOME DH

He also cleans the counters!!!!!

I bet your ones don't do that!!!!!!!!!

Aefondkiss · 06/05/2007 19:07

yes my in-house "dishwasher" has just finished his "cycle" took 20 minutes, after cooking a roast dinner, he put everything away, wiped down the surfaces, and is now entertaining ds, so I can sit here looking at mn

Wotzsaname · 06/05/2007 19:08

more to the point, who uses rubber gloves to wash up?

I have witches wrinkley hands, but they are clean!

InTheseShoes · 06/05/2007 19:16

Heh,I used to say that I had the "1967 upright model" dishwasher before we had one (which I would not be without if only because it serves great purpose as a cupboard for dirty dishes!)

bobsmum · 06/05/2007 19:21

I don't have a dishwasher and my whole life seems to be spent at the sink. I sometimes wonder whether I actually spend more time with my hands in dishwater than with my children.

I don't care whether having a dishwasher would cause the ice caps to melt tomorrow. I need one and I need it now.

I do everything else to help the planet - even getting a geothermal heatpump installed for goodness sake. What more can I do?

I deserve a dishwasher. But I need a kitchen to put it in first and that has to wait until the geothermal heat pump is in first.

mamatres · 06/05/2007 19:25

i am our dishwasher.
would love an electrical plug in one but no room in kitchen
tried to persuade dh to let us build a utility room to house one but he thought that was a bit extravagent!
my friend said hers changed her life! but then she is prone to exageration
