Anyone know what this ticking noise in my walls could be?

So I came to bed and the boxed in area where all the pipes are kept is making a loud clicking/ticking noise. I went down stairs thinking it was a toy that hadn't been switched off but it wasn't. I went to the boiler room and the boiler is ticking. Even though I turn the boiler off at the mains it's still bloody ticking! Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I'm anxious and won't be able to sleep through this. It sounds like a constant timer going round !

It's the pipes cooling down or heating up.

Could be air in your pipes. If you have a radiator key (or buy one they are cheap and handy to have) you need to go the radiator at the 'end' of your system (furthest away) and gently open the valve to release any air. Then do this on all radiators. Do it very slowly and gently and with a towel nearby (and heating off too) to catch any dribbles of water. Good luck!

Hello. Thanks everyone. I've not had the heating in since this morning and only been using the hot water so I'm not sure if it's cooling down. My husband is at work overnight so he can't have a look at it. This is very annoying!

Oh god we have that, it just started fairly recently. It’s bloody annoying. We’ve got a service next week so will mention it.

Could it be a bomb? You could dig into the walls with a pick ax or hammer and hustle Xmas Grin

BarbaraOcumbungles · 30/12/2017 21:37

Could be your gas meter :)

I had/have this. Bleeding the radiators and topping up the pressure mostly got rid of it. Still get it if my bedroom radiator is set to be less than full on Confused

TynesideBlonde · 30/12/2017 21:40

It’s most likely air in pipes. Do you have a key to bleed radiators - it’s very straightforward. If you have one I can tell you what to do.

Death watch beetle? Is it an old house?

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathwatch_beetle Has a recording of the noise

rainbowruthie · 30/12/2017 21:42

Try running your cold water tap and see if that stops it

whydidievergetmarried · 30/12/2017 21:52

Thanks everyone. I don't have a radiator key I don't think as my husband had all this stuff in his tool box in the shed and it's too dark and late to go out. This is a new sound and I've never heard this before. The house is old. It is from 1935. This sound is a lot faster and never pauses or anything so I don't think it is a death watcher beetle although I understand why you suggested it as it is a very distinctive noise they make!

I have ran the taps and it's still doing it
