My mum used to boil ours on the stove in a huge pot!!! They were always white as snow! For all of 5 minutes

Socks are very difficult to keep white. I've tried most things. I just replace them regularly these days.

Beauregard · 23/04/2007 20:59

She has only worn them today and they are black
They were cheap but i can't afford to replace them on a daily basis.
Anyone know where i could buy grey ankle socks instead?

Asda and Wilkinson do grey ones. They seem to be aimed at boys, but my dd wore grey socks one year because she fancied a change and they looked rather nice

You can get long ones too which I found in Woolies iirc.

What about spray vanish, which I find really good and a hot wash. 60'C seems to do the job and as long as cotton wont shrink.

I do my grubby whites in a 60 degree wash with normal powder plus "vanish" stain remover powder (special one for whites) added plus a Glo-white sachet (about £1 for 4). Sometimes blitz grubby bits with pre-wash Vanish spray beforehand as well.

Generally everything comes up dazzling but have no idea what it's doing to the environment...

fransmom · 23/04/2007 21:20

vanish didn't seem to work here!

My MIL swears by that glo white stuff you get in a packet, i have never tried it but she says it good.

hth
