If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

This is where, from the first of the month (seriously, HOW is it November already?!), we follow – loosely – the rules of FlyLady [see website here ]. (Pls ignore the barftastic language, and we suggest NOT signing up to the emails as there are rather a lot of them. All the info you need will be posted here on a daily basis.)

Helpful info on getting started here!.

We adopt a three-pronged approach:

-start or repeat baby steps

  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone or area (yes, just 15 mins focused work a day makes a difference!)

and/or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

NB
This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Another NB
Start where you are. There is no need to worry about being perfect – perfectionism = paralysis! There is no such thing as ‘falling behind’ with FlyLady, if you miss anything, just move on and continue as normal the next day.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck!

newbie to flying here :)

my house, I am ashamed to say, is a cluttered mess, and it needs sorting desperately. I am 11 weeks pregnant and I NEED to get it sorted before baby arrives. A combination of a horribly stressful job, bouts of depression, a very messy 5 year old, and my own damn laziness have meant it's all just built up and up and I feel utterly overwhelmed just thinking about it. I hope this plan works for me as taking small steps is maybe what I need - when I try a big declutter and tidy it's just too much.

starting with baby step 1 - will do my sink Grin

MercuryRising · 05/11/2017 12:39

Wow cag how have you managed to lose so much weight? 4 stone is a huge amount to lose in a normal year without having a baby! I have struggled to lose any weight since having ds2 Sad

MercuryRising · 05/11/2017 12:42

Welcome phoenix the flylady plan definitely works if you stick with it. I have been dipping in and out for years. Whilst my house is still a long way from perfect, I have definitely got better at keeping on top of things. The ladies on this thread are lovely and very encouraging too which also helps.

FlyingJellyfishInTheAttic · 05/11/2017 13:01

Hope everyone is good!

Had quote for attic -£19.5k so today's mission is to make a decision and discuss.after work. Very stressful though :S

Cagliostro · 05/11/2017 13:25

It's mostly been luck I think mercury TBH. I did decide at new year though that I would cut right down on fizzy drinks though. I have a massive weakness for Dr Pepper, Pepsi etc and I was buying a fair bit each week - just things like picking up a bottle at the shop by the bus stop in town etc. So I decided to reduce it (cutting out entirely was too far for me, I don't do being deprived! Blush) and only have a glass if out for a meal rather than ordering from Tesco etc. Lost about 1.5st doing that alone. Which is quite scary really, how much of that stuff was I drinking?! Blush

After that it was pregnancy related I think as I had awful nausea for the first 16 weeks and wasn't eating much. Then I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in the third trimester and suddenly had to check blood sugars constantly, I was advised to reduce carbs and increase protein and good fat and that plus not being allowed 'treats' made me lose weight faster. I'm hoping to stick vaguely to that idea now (although I am no longer having to avoid stuff like cake altogether) but TBH it made the end of pregnancy incredibly stressful - I was an anxious wreck getting paranoid about everything I ate, and then I had what turned out to be a totally unnecessary induction at 37w (worries about the placenta but the MW cut it open for me after and it was perfect!) which took 4 bloody awful days and was my most medicalised birth of the three. All because of GD.

Not that I mind now of course because DD2 is here and healthy and perfect!

Cagliostro · 05/11/2017 13:27

Phoenix welcome, flylady is awesome and the principles really helped me during pregnancy. House is nowhere near perfect but I have been able to do little and often and see a gradual improvement, plus I have some better routines in place which has reduced the new-baby chaos!

Wow jelly that's a huge decision to make!

foxessocks · 05/11/2017 14:04

Tell me more about the hand dyed hand spun Bowerbird I bought a spinning wheel this year so the wool stash is a mix of fibre and wool and I am hoping to get a sweater quantity from [[http://www.laxtons.com/shop/index.php?route=common/home here] and was thinking that I could dye it to the colour I want. this should be pie in the sky thinking due to the number of WIPs that are lurking and causing clutter Is it natural or acid dye that you used?

jelly good luck with the decision making

PhoenixDown · 05/11/2017 18:47

Thanks for the welcome!

Stupid questions (probably the first of many) - I think I'll condense some of the baby steps eg. I don't need a full day to write down negative thoughts (??) or write a few notes. Is this OK to do?

I've flicked through the baby steps and it seems a long while until any actual decluttering or tidying starts - it doesn't mention doing daily essential tasks like clothes washing etc, do I just carry on with those in my usual disorganised style for now? Sorting out my shameful clothes piles and throwing out old clothes is one of my priorities!

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/11/2017 19:52

pheonix ignore crappy ones(i didnt write notes)
Start with sink and if you have 15 mins spare a day pick a spot and start keep.charity.bin.
Each day we add a new habit so by end of month we are do at least a load wash a day(if enough people in your house to warrant it.knowing whats for tea before 6 pm.we move from area to area each week so you can do the misdions for the day and declutter in that "zone"
It depends on how much time(and motivation) you put in
Ive been settled in over a year here.my house is NOT a palace but we have a rough framework to stop ut getting worse as we pick away at the Clutter

Tadas
Bit shop
Shedloads washing

Tonight all zoolets(my dc to newbies) have clean shoes and pack bags fir tomorrow)
Lil ones fed n watered(curently watch fireworks out ds bedroom window)til 8

First day at new school tomorrow.new routine needed as further to walk.eeeeeek

HillsBesideTheSea · 05/11/2017 20:48

ta da
watch bits of lots of different firework displays whilst driving miles.

I am done and tomorrow's to do list requires me to clean out my car before it goes to the garage at 9am Hmm and goes down hill from there Hmm

Agree with leaving out the cutesy/crappy baby steps if it seems overwhelming. They do have an underlying point and logic but quite frankly as it is presented these days it is lost. Tweak to fit you if needed (eg my errand day is typically tuesday not the Flylady thursday because I am in town already on tuesday and it makes no sense to make a second trip on thursday)

Sludgecolours · 05/11/2017 22:10

Good evening everybody! Gosh it's been busy on here today!

A huge thank you to lljkk for taking the trouble to post those amazingly helpful links (one quoted below)! Very very interesting to read and will return to the question of Kondo v Flylady later! Smile
(Have used one of the links to help answer Phoenix's questions below!)

A very warm welcome to Phoenix ! I am sure others will be along with further and better advice than mine, but I echo what Zoo and Hills have already said in that the baby-steps are there just to provide a framework and get you started on your daily routines - so you adapt them to suit your home and your individual lifestyle - so no need to stick to them too rigidly. They are really hints as to what tasks you may find useful to include in your daily routines.

Also, note that Flylady deliberately provides pauses and repetitions in each month, so that if you miss a day here or there, it doesn't really matter.

Although each individual step obviously doesn't take a day to achieve, the idea is that every day as you move through the month, you repeat the previous steps as well, so although there are only a few steps to familiarise yourself with and action at the beginning of the month, by the end of the month you have quite a long list of baby steps to achieve morning and night.

The philosophy of building things up slowly and not doubling or whatever - is to take things slow and consistently - in order to avoid burn out! This is a central tenet of the Flylady system. Many of us have found this to be very helpful advice as housework is an ongoing marathon ... and it is very easy to get over-enthusiastic at the beginning and then give up when we have taken too much on all at once. Again though, do what suits your individual energy levels and lifestyle and your individual objectives.

Although you say that it takes a long time for decluttering/tidying to start ... you can choose to declutter or tidy or do a mission (depending on what stage you are at) in the week's current zone. For example, we are in the kitchen zone this week. Flylady says we can't clean clutter. So if your kitchen is cluttered, spend 15 mins a day decluttering it. Then once it has been decluttered, you can spend 15 mins a day cleaning it (and this is where the missions come in from baby step 13 onwards). I hope that makes sense!

You may find the following advice helpful with regard to baby-steps:

here

and

here.

As you will see from lljkk's very helpful link above, laundry isn't mentioned until baby step 20. You probably won't be able to wait until the 20th to wash smalls Grin so carry on as you normally would, but thereafter, if you want to, include one wash a day in your daily routine.

If none of the above makes any sense at all Grin then you might like to buy the Flylady book, Sink Reflections, which helps to explain things a bit more clearly. Personally, although I think the underlying system is sound, the Flylady website is imho in need of a mahoosive update and the info is presented in a bit of a clunk and disjointed way at the best of times.

HTH! If not, don't hesitate to ask again! And I am sure all the other fledglings will put me right if I have got any of the above wrong, or explain it in a more succinct fashion.

Good luck anyway!

OP posts:
Sludgecolours · 05/11/2017 22:16

argh - erratum - sorry

clunk = clunky

other fledglings will explain!

Phoenix also, forgot to add, the baby-steps as mentioned, are really just tools to get you started. After a while (I promise) these steps, or the ones that suit you and your home anyway, become second nature and you don't really realise you are doing them! They just become part of your day without the need to think about them too much ifyswim!

TaylorTinker · 05/11/2017 22:30

Thanks Sludgecolours.

And lljkk that link was a good read! I am currently doing a (slowmotion and rather too random) Kondo, so planning to get rid of a lot of my stuff, but I also need to get the house functioning better with routines everyone can get on board with.

Sludgecolours · 05/11/2017 22:32

lljkk Again, thank you hugely for posting those links! They are immensely helpful!

(I just post links every day from the main Flylady website btw which I can access from my desk top.) Do the individual links not work for you? Have you tried accessing it through Chrome rather than Firefox (she says as though she knows what she is talking about)?

Others may have more helpful technical advice about ad blockers and some such!

And just to add to lljkk's very helpful links, for any newcomers who want to print out the Beginner Baby Steps on one page to stick on fridge or whatever, here they are in PDF format:

here.

The question about Kondo v Flylady is a very interesting one and the blog you linked makes me feel a lot better about my general inability to declutter in long-lasting way!! (I was so relieved to read that I was not the only person for whom the Flylady routines worked a treat - but the decluttering part of the system - not so much!)

Many of us on here came to the conclusion a while back that a combination of Kondo (for decluttering) and Flylady (for maintaining) is the ideal combination! Indeed, we often refer to that in the op on these threads, but I failed to do so this month for some reason!

I think once you have decluttered thoroughly and properly, then it is possible to maintain that decluttered space in 15 mins bursts or by only pulling out what you can put back in an hour for example, but it probably takes more intense and lengthy work to sort out more entrenched clutter that has built up in layers over a long period of time!

Thanks again for links! Hope you will be joining us on the thread? Welcome anyway Smile!

Will just post links for tomorrow now (in case people are anxious to see them) and then respond to the rest of the day's posts ...

The summary for Mon 6th is available on the Flylady website here under "Today" and via the flight plan which should update itself automatically on a daily basis.

Baby-step no. 6 for Mon 6th Nov is here. Continue previous steps and add tackling "hot spots" to the list. Newcomers: the definition of a hot spot is a pile of clothes or papers or junk that attracts more clothes or papers or junk! The theory is that clutter attracts more clutter, and like a forest fire, you have to keep putting out the hot spots before they get out of control!

We are in Zone 2 this week: Kitchen, Back Porch,Laundry Room,Pantry (November 5-11) : here.

Spend 15 mins decluttering the current zone.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list for Zone 2 (if you are at that stage) is here.

Monday's mission is: here! [SC faints with delight! Have only just realised that Flylady has finally updated the kitchen missions, so we are not sorting out our cutlery drawers for the tenth time in succession! Yay!] Oh yes, Monday's mission is: sorting out the area under your kitchen sink and making a list of things you need to replace.

The daily focus for Monday is the weekly home blessing hour or what we call the home bleugh here. Spend 10 mins on each of seven essential tasks. Newcomers: the theory is that, as you house becomes clear of clutter, this will take less and less time to complete. However, many of us still find it difficult to get the bed making done in the time available. Also, for those working long hours during the week, an alternative option is to spread the tasks out, 10 mins a day.

The monthly habit for November is menu planning here!

Flykid's challenge: here (hopefully continually renewing itself).

Daily reminders (which should also update themselves automatically)
here.

Holiday missions here!

Have a productive start to the week everyone!

Awww... you guys are truly nice. Thx.
I hate routine & cleaning house. Don't think FlyLady is my thing.
