If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

This is where, from the first of the month (seriously, HOW is it November already?!), we follow – loosely – the rules of FlyLady [see website here ]. (Pls ignore the barftastic language, and we suggest NOT signing up to the emails as there are rather a lot of them. All the info you need will be posted here on a daily basis.)

Helpful info on getting started here!.

We adopt a three-pronged approach:

-start or repeat baby steps

  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone or area (yes, just 15 mins focused work a day makes a difference!)

and/or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

NB
This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Another NB
Start where you are. There is no need to worry about being perfect – perfectionism = paralysis! There is no such thing as ‘falling behind’ with FlyLady, if you miss anything, just move on and continue as normal the next day.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck!

Hello all
I was on the thread, ahem, back in the new year Blush and would like to get back into it.
DCs are 2 and 3 and I'm setting up a business. House comes last unfortunately but would like to get it sorted. Chaos is me!

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 13/11/2017 14:42

Room for a small one?

Sludgecolours · 13/11/2017 14:47

Of course there is always room for one more AllroadsleadbacktoRadley!! A warm welcome to you!

And hello again to KadabrasSpoon! Great to have you back! And if you don't mind me saying so - you are not chaos - your household may just be a bit out of whack atm owing to how much you have on your plate currently - which sounds like a lot!

OP posts:
AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 13/11/2017 14:55

I'm reading through the thread atm.

Would I still be allowed to join in if I admitted that, while we are settling into our new house, and all chaotic, I'm getting a cleaner to pop in dor an hour or two a week? It's temporary- I'm hoping to build up some good habits so that I no longer need her.

Oh, and because I'm packing stuff and trawling up and down the outside steps, I'm in my lace up shoes...so I look the part already! Lace up shoes and a flat that wouldn't be out of place on Hoarders!

HillsBesideTheSea · 13/11/2017 15:21

Cag have you tried graphic novels? ds loves the link/(blooming computer game i can't recall) ones. I know there are some which are more child friendly ones. Also Captain Underpants is a mixture of pictures and words which might help comprehension - they are popular so library likely to have.

HillsBesideTheSea · 13/11/2017 15:23

Delegation of task counts. Allroads besides the cleaning bit is fairly easy, decluttering and taming otoh!!

HillsBesideTheSea · 13/11/2017 15:28

ta da
clear up after ds' project making

About to drink more coffee, tackle the ironing and wash some clothes. It's a fun filled day here Hmm

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 13/11/2017 15:36

Thanks Hills. I'm looking at all my boxes- too late because they're packed now!- and thinking that, if I'd bothered to declutter beforehand, I'd have half of the junk I have to move now!

We've got a plan that DH runs as many boxes over a night as he can, and I sort in he day. So, a small promise to myself...I WILL declutter each box as I pack! 27 fucking mugs I just counted- before I shoved all 27 in the box for shifting anyway! Why???? We are a family of four and the DC don't drink hot drinks! So 13.5 mugs each!

Sludgecolours · 13/11/2017 15:45

Strong Brews and strength to those of you with ailing dc; those who are ailing themselves, and/or those of you who have the builders in!

And patience to those of you with feisty felines!

Afreshstart Plaster dust is the worst! Plaster dust combined with colds must be horrible for all concerned!

FlyingJellyfish well done for finishing bedroom!

Cag and Afresh sorry to hear that the little 'uns are still ailing and coughing away. It all sounds v tough going indeed, especially the sleep deprivation xx

Cag it is bound to be a tough adjustment when your dh first goes back to work. Take it steady! I can thoroughly recommend Emil and the Detectives here it's about a boy detective and I loved it when I was eight! And for books to read together; Geoffrey Trease's Bows Against the Barons is excellent (but maybe for when your ds is a little older to read alone) here.

Sorry to hear you had disturbed sleep too Toostressy! Hope you can catch up tonight (and that you found the mouse!!).

Foxes oh dear - poor you and poor ds - I suppose we all have those sorts of days and toddlers are no exception! Can't be easy though! (Hope you have managed to prevent ds-bannister incident btw and that you are not reaching for the butter or the baby oil atm and not calling the fire brigade!!) Great chore list and that you have managed to find a skirt for the wedding which is a miraculous achievement in my book with two little 'uns in tow!

Hills sock basket of doom is the pits!! I have one waiting to be sorted here (usually pair to the accompaniment of the Archers or the evening news which takes my mind off the tedium). Hope rest of your list going ok!

Wow I'vegotbills that's a great ta da list you have achieved this morning!! (Especially when you are working night shifts and have the builders in Star!) Pat yourself on the back for it and although I know exactly what you mean about decluttering/cleaning revealing yet more decluttering/cleaning - try to congratulate yourself with what you have done - reward yourself with an enjoyable activity or long break - before doing any more! Slow and steady does it!! Well done! Star And arf at UFO Grin in freezer!

Hope you are feeling ok today Zoo and sorry you had such a tough weekend xxxx Sorry that dd2 is suffering with her ears again x

Afreshstart Toostressy and Bowerbird5 I am not a fluffy dressing gown person (although I love the concept in theory and I love my furry sheepskin slippers). This house is far too drafty and cold to wear night wear except in bed, and I find dressing gown sleeves get in the way too much (I have a tendency to get them wet or set them on fire!). And as I have the self discipline of an errant slug - I have to dress immediately in my house chore "indoor uniform" when I get up (yoga pants, polo shirt, trainers, apron = très chic not) - or else I would happily retreat to the sofa or bed to read all day long!! Blush

Bowerbird v well done wrt a very productive Sunday! My week day routine sounds similar to yours wrt ring-fenced days of activity in that I tend to work and Fly Mon & Wed & Fri and try and do other things Tues and Thurs. Usually playing catch up though but it is good to have a basic routine!

Last but not least: Cag CallmeCordelia Zoo it is really shocking to read about your awful birth experiences; I am so sorry you had to go through all of that. I know birth can be v painful but I feel outrage that you were left to suffer for so long. Here they have a much more interventionist and medicalised approach - which I know some people don't like - but you would never be left longer than 3 hrs before they jump in with a cs!! I particular can't bear the fact that people feel that they have to be grateful when they and their babies are fine (although of course that is a huge relief and joy) when their actually experience of birth was so traumatic. [Flowers] to you all xxx

Mahoosive wing flaps to anyone I have missed!

I am very tired this morning after a fairly busy weekend and not much sleep. I am v worried about dh who is also suffering from insomnia. He is normally so optimistic/cheerful/strong and he is finding work hard-going atm and hasn't shaved for the past 3 days Shock. This is so unlike him I am seriously concerned. I think he has been over-doing it and is not good at delegating. Also (not making a political point here - just stating the case) that the uncertainty of Brexit is causing him a lot of stresses. I knew something was up when a client wanted him to fly to Italy on Wed and he said he didn't feel like it. Normally he would jump at the chance Sad as he really enjoys his job. I don't know how to help him (he is a very independent/self-reliant type who hates being fussed over) save for having good dinner on table when he gets home and encouraging him to take a holiday (which he finds stressful in itself).

Ta da:
animals
furry walk 1
empty dw
stack dw (this had been neglected over/we)
unload wms and re-feed
do all the bed-changing that is normally a w/e family activity
prep supper
clear one stack of cardboard doom in corner of boudoir! Yay!

think that is my limit for today - going to sit and write some Christmas lists now!

Have a good evening everyone!

Callmecordelia · 13/11/2017 16:06

Thanks Sludge. I still can't believe how much went wrong. Briefly I was in hospital for eight days. I had DS late in the evening of the fifth day. There were delays between administering each stage of the induction drugs (there are three) as they didn't have enough midwives to run an induction safely, and by day three I was insisting on an epidural before they tried again and there were no anaesthetists. Lost test results showing protein in my urine from day 1, and found them five days later. A consultant was rough doing an examination because she was annoyed about the epidural thing. Staff didn't believe me that my waters had gone, despite it happening during my first birth. Infection after the EMCS. Sad I heard from the birth afterthoughts service this morning. They are getting my notes and will fix an appointment in the next few weeks.

Ta das
I'm ill again so no home bleugh here today
Two loads of washing
Tidied kitchen
Made beds
Limply played with DS who is a delightful, bouncy, funny boy, who is saying a few words and noticeably understanding more in the last few weeks. Had to put that bit in after the depressing paragraph above!

Honu · 13/11/2017 16:49

Only 27 mugs Radley? I seem to have 41! Oh dear.
I have a couple of spare minutes so quickly joining in...
SC I have come to the conclusion that if somewhere just keeps getting cluttered or messy then it must be the system or storage or something, not general uselessness or laziness on my part. So well done with your revamping of the boudoir - drastic action is sometimes needed.
And for all those railing against the education system - I just hate the whole culture of teaching to the test. What is the point of teaching simultaneous equations to a pupil who can't cope with dividing 37 by 5? (as I was doing today).
And breathe...

Sludgecolours · 13/11/2017 16:54

Crikey, dd extremely grumpy and rude this evening as well... must be something in the water Confused ... trying not to take it personally!

x posts

CallmeCordelia I am so sorry to hear that you are ill again. Poor you, that's really tough going. But happy to hear that the birth afterthoughts service has been in touch - (consultant sounds awful) - I hope they can offer you some support and answer some questions and that the process brings you a little comfort. Your ds sounds absolutely delightful btw! Smile

AllroadsleadbacktoRadley whey hey to lace up shoes and good luck with settling in! Go easy on yourself because a house move is notoriously stressful! And yes, it is definitely OK to have a cleaner! (I do as this house is very old and big and crumbling and difficult to clean with lots and lots of stairs.) And as Hills says - the actual cleaning is the least of it - although great to have help in that area!

Hills bande dessinée is mahoosive over here and hugely helped me with my French language learning! Wow and Star for your humungous list!! (Don't you hate those awkward items of clothing that need wm exclusively for themselves?)

Meant to say my list today was in addition to 'work' work ...but now it is dark and time to cook supper again ... where does the day go?

OP posts:
AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 13/11/2017 16:56

Make that 26. Note to self, if you're scrambling onto a kitchen counter, and slip, do NOT grab onto a cardboard box full of mugs to steady yourself!

Sludgecolours · 13/11/2017 17:03

Lovely to "see" you (as ever!) Honu! Smile

Thank you, to you and everyone else, for kind words about my decluttering purge on Sat! Much appreciated! (It only happens once or twice a year so you will probably now find me on chaise longue in darkened room for the next three months I am determined to keep going! I was hoping that boudoir and playroom would look a lot more decluttered than they did afterwards but ...um... they don't... but it's a start again.

">I have come to the conclusion that if somewhere just keeps getting cluttered or messy then it must be the system or storage or something, not general uselessness or laziness on my part."

I totally agree and unfortunately it applies to 90% of our house! Because basic plastering, wiring, flooring etc not done - storage is temporary - and sea of crapola floats around from floor to floor!! So frustrating!

And yy to "teaching to the test"! For the very first time yesterday, dd said words to the effect of , "I haven't studied and I don't care because there will just be another test after this one and we have so many tests that it's impossible to keep up". Apparently, even the best and brightest in her class are starting to feel this way. There is no let up. Sad

Oh no Allroadss! Hope you are ok!

It's one way of decluttering the mugs though Grin

OP posts:
AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 13/11/2017 17:23

😅😅😅😅😅😅yes- I tend to just bounce! Luckily DH came home ten minutes afterwards, so the shards got cleaned up. (Ps- I'm not that lazy that I leave everything to DH, I'm VI, ehich gets me out of random shite like the litter box, broken mugs, and...erm...driving?)

HillsBesideTheSea · 13/11/2017 17:57

Well that is one way to declutter mugs allroads
Honu i refuse to count the number of mugs in this house. It will be horrific.

Can I ground for life ds who has not come home from school yet, has not arranged to go out and has not let me know where he is AND has form for doing this! Angry

Cagliostro · 13/11/2017 18:14

It's so hard to do stuff when you have a warm snuggly baby sleeping on you. I need to heat up the cottage pie a friend put in our freezer before the birth. We didn't make it to taekwondo, there's no way I would've managed the walk back up the hill with this cough.

Need to tidy up a bit more too. Friend just texted to say she's picking up the Caglets tomorrow for a play with her kids, which is lovely but I don't feel I could even open the front door without embarrassment ATM 😳😳😳

Cagliostro · 13/11/2017 19:26

In meltdown mode this evening. Stupid to try and figure out slings (friends have given/let me borrow some) they're so complicated and I can't work out if I've done it right even with videos. And then I decided to do the cottage pie another friend made but it's not defrosting, DS is refusing it anyway (will get DD to make him a toastie, CBA to argue) but it's nowhere near cooked yet.

I feel like an ungrateful cow as people have been so nice doing these things for us 😰

Afresh DS loves graphic novels, he's had Percy Jackson (knows the stories from audiobooks and films) and loves Phoenix comic books which the Caglets are getting more of for Christmas :) Thanks

Aaaargh someone give me a pointy stick but be warned I might cry

Bowerbird5 · 13/11/2017 19:33

Then don't wrap 'em up and make 'em stand out and wait😂

I wrote two posts this morning! First one I leant on the iPad and it switched onto another page losing it and the second time I was about to press post when ping the iPad ran out of juice!

After a very busy day with the only break all day was a two minute wee! I was on duty too. This afternoon was stressful ...Nurture Group and they are newly in. Very hard to stay calm when they are threatening each other and whispering rude & inappropriate words to needle some.
Glad I was going home early for telephone app. From hospital in North East. Is this a thing now?

Ta Das since being home.
Phone call 20 mins to report back last week and advice for future. Had a charming young man who was very handsome. Lovely voice.

Made chicken and veg soup for my cold.
Stir fry chicken, veg and noodles teriyaki.
Two loads of washing, clothes & sheets.
Washed kitchen floor Zoflora mixed rose and lavender. I have never heard of it till you all started raving about it.
Bed made and a little bit of a tidy re bedroom this morning.

Right off to pub for quiz.

Congratulations on some fab flying.
Cags hope you feel better soon. Has your DS tried Jeremy Strong series my nephews loved him. For comprehension try practice with some of the short extracts from the Internet. There was some Dahl ones that my Yr3/4 s (2015) loved. Also a lot of 7/8 yr olds don't cotton on that all the answers are in the writing and they just have to find them. I find letting them use highlighters to mark it before writing helps.
Hills what a list!
Off to count my mugs. Someone has nicked two new ones at school. I was only given them in July hmm!

foxessocks · 13/11/2017 19:35

SC sorry to hear your dh is not feeling great atm, I don't know what you can do really if he doesn't want to open up about it, but perhaps he will in time - would he talk about it if you tell him you're worried (I know you say he isn't the type to want to be fussed over, my dh is the same, doesn't really talk about feelings!).

cag you are not ungrateful! I had the same when ds was born, somebody very kindly lent me a sling but I couldn't get to grips with it at all, I eventually did figure out how to put it on but it was taking me so long every morning that I was getting so stressed that we'd miss nursery school drop off for dd!! I found watching you tube videos of how to wear the sling quite helpful, and allowing extra time for a while (and in the end I gave up to be honest and just used the buggy but you may succeed where I failed! I am hopeless with things like that!)

Finished my to do list and ds is not stuck in a bannister thank goodness! He has been such a pickle today, either whinging or getting into trouble. I was quite relieved when bed time came (and then he did a massive poo in the bath but luckily dh was in charge!)

Still haven't sent my mop back though.

Cagliostro · 13/11/2017 19:39

:o bower maybe I'll just preempt them, obviously they will want to meet baby, so I'll take her outside to meet them!

Thanks foxes I really hope I can get used to it, even if I end up buying a different one, as although I love the buggy (really pleased with the one we chose actually, it's lovely) we are on buses so much and it would be nice not to have to use it all the time. But I'm also not sure on sizing, I have lost weight and hopefully will continue but they mostly seem designed for slimmer women! Blush

Still microwaving the cottage pie. Aaaaargh

Cagliostro · 13/11/2017 19:42

I also would really like to be able to feed while she's actually in the sling and I'm not sure that's possible with the ones I've been given, I would prefer something stretchier I think especially having big boobs :o

Irony is one of my friends is well trained in slings etc and she is wanting to help but I don't think I want to ATM, I know that's stupid and again sounds really ungrateful but I feel too shy and vulnerable just now :( :(

Afreshstartplease · 13/11/2017 19:44

cag my boys are 8+9, the younger is really into beast quest books, they also both enjoy wimpy kid and tom gates has he tried any of those?
