Stair carpets - how do you vacuum the "up" bit?

I have a Dyson which I vacuum the bit you stand on but what do you do about the vertical bit?

I remember my mum used to use a hard brush and sweep the stairs. But 1) I don't have a hard brush, 2) I'm not inclined to do that anyway.

Just go and buy a hard brush and do it a la Mum. The whole house looks better if the stairs are brushed as does the garden if the lawn is mown. I don't have any carpet on my stairs yet though Blush

Spiral staircases and those open staircases don't have risers. It's not that uncommon.

I always feel like I'm going to fall through the hole in stairs that don't have risers, so I don't like them either.

so my choices are

  1. fiddle about with my vacuum
  2. hard brush like my mum used to (can't do this as the carpet is loopy bits so I think I'd destroy them) (plus it's "hard" work)
  3. forget about them

Don't do it OP, no-one will notice.

My risers have visible fluff and bits on them. I can't really avoid dysoning them.

I do them every now and again as the dog leaves hair on it. I turn the head around it swivels. It doesn't give a great grip but looks a bit better after. I don't do them that often.
