Hoover think it's fine for a BASTARD heat pump dryer to take EIGHT HOURS to dry a load

Can I have a rant please? It would please me greatly if even one person was dissuaded from buying this godawful bastard dryer.

Which one? well that would be the Hoover Dynamic Mega DMHD1013A2 Freestanding Heat Pump Tumble Dryer, 10kg Load, A++ Energy Rating, that's which one!

So, this fucker takes all day to dry a load. If you're not in the house to keep switching it back on, the clothes sit there damp in between cycles and come out musty. Ugh.

So I timed it. 4 hours 15 minutes to dry two bath sheets, a bath towel and a hand towel. Bearing in mind this is a 10kg drum, so is meant for larger loads, but this was a modest load.

The longest programme on the dryer is 'all towels' and is 3 hours. At 3 hours the towels are nowhere near dry so I switch it back on and keep checking it. It takes 4 hours 15 as I said above.

Bought in April from JL. JL say no problem, ring hoover and they'll send an engineer.

Hoover say, "yeah...these heat pump dryers can take longer you know, but we'll send an engineer for which you will be charged if there's no issues".

So, I check this - am I going to be charged because heat pump dryers are supposed to take more than four hours to dry a load? She says, "let me just check how long it should take... yes my manager says they can take up to eight hours to dry a load."

EIGHT HOURS

EIGHT HOURS

And the longest cycle is 3 hours, so you have to be in the house to keep switching it back on. Twice.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! What's the fucking point in that! I could get my five year old to blow on it and it would dry quicker.

EIGHT HOURS!! So anything less than eight hours is not an issue with the machine. No wonder these things are rated as energy efficient because we end up not using it!

btw, JL are being cool about it so far and have asked me to check weights and times of loads and get back to them.

Going out and leaving the dryer on is a fire hazard

What utter bollocks. 8 hours to dry a load of washing? Ha, as if.

Afreshstartplease · 31/08/2017 13:38

Can you not return it? As its not fit for purpose

Naoko · 31/08/2017 13:38

Bullshit. I have a heat pump dyer, not an expensive fancy one either - one of the cheapest heat pump types on the market when I bought it two years ago. I use its 3 hour 'cupboard dry' program for almost everything, and the washing comes out so warm and dry I've been tempted to go to sleep on it like a cat.

turbohamster · 31/08/2017 13:43

Washing would dry hung up inside without the heating on in 8 hours

Zvandelle · 31/08/2017 13:45

Exactly what Naoko says - sometimes when that lovely warm dry pile is ready for sorting I throw it on to the sofa and lie down on it for a bit. Less so in the summer months...Tell Hoover that they are having a laugh, then ask them for their social media site addresses so you can ask how many other users have to stay in all day?!

InDubiousBattle · 31/08/2017 13:46

That's ridiculous! My condenser dryer will dry 7kg 8f towels bone dry in under an hour. As I understand it your contract is with John lewis so i'd take it up with them. You really shouldn't leave a dryer on over night or whilst you're out so they can't in all seriousness expect you to sit in for 8 hours to dry a load of washing. Not fit for purpose, take it back.

NewDaddie · 31/08/2017 13:49

Sds drill (with clutch)... £100
110mm Core drill bit... £50
Vented tumble dryer... £200

Opportunity to be a GF on MN about how my set up cost less than a heat pump... priceless.

NewDaddie · 31/08/2017 13:52

In about 35 minutes I'm going to pull 4 lovely fluffy towels from the dryer to give dd a bath when she wakes up.

MrsSpenserGregson · 31/08/2017 13:56

Slight derail here - but do you guys all use the tumble dryer only when you're at home?????

InDubiousBattle · 31/08/2017 14:00

MrsSpencer yep, or at least it would have to be pretty desperate not to. Our friend is a fireman and said that they can start fires. No idea how but he's not one to scaremonger so when he said he didn't leave them on I stopped! I also stared to be very careful about cleaning the filters.

MrsSpenserGregson · 31/08/2017 14:03

I understand the cleaning of the filter, sure, but if I didn't leave the tumble dryer on overnight I'd never get anything dry.... Does the fireman say that's unsafe too? im getting scared now too!

Oh and OP - YANBU!

Redglitter · 31/08/2017 14:05

Washing would dry hung up inside without the heating on in 8 hours

I wish!!!

Redglitter · 31/08/2017 14:07

My brothers a Firefighter and his advice is never leave washing machines or tumble driers on if you're going out. He's seen far too often the devastation that can be caused by them

BackieJerkhart · 31/08/2017 14:08

I was on a H&S course for childminding recently and they told us that if we go through them (the provider of the course) for insurance we aren't insured to use a TD at all when minded children are there because of the risk of them going on fire. Even if you are going to be there the whole time!

upperlimit · 31/08/2017 14:09

Not me MrsSpenserGregson. I just empty the lint out on each go and then get on with things which include going out. But I'm fairly reckless by MN standards.

PickAChew · 31/08/2017 14:13

Hoover are talking rot. My John Lewis own brand heat pump dryer gets a fell washer load of towels dry in under 2 hours.

You need to complain about it not being fit for purpose.

BASTARDdryer · 31/08/2017 14:22

Oh, and Hoover also said washing should be 75% dry before it goes in the dryer.

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Am I on Candid Camera?? 😂😂😂

So, I'll buy a cheap vented dryer to pre-dry my clothes before I put them in the heat pump dryer. Okaaaaaaaay Hmm

OP posts:
BoreOfWhabylon · 31/08/2017 14:26

Get back on to JL and escalate. Dryer is not fit for purpose.

upperlimit · 31/08/2017 14:27

It sounds ridiculous. I wonder if they mean that the clothes should have been on a spin setting in the washing machine rather than thrown in saturated with water?

BASTARDdryer · 31/08/2017 14:28

Yes that would make sense re full spin. My washer is 1400 spin so should be fine!

Knope2020 · 31/08/2017 14:28

I've just got rid of one like this afyer 5 bloody years!!

Oh my god
It's a revalation!!

InDubiousBattle · 31/08/2017 14:28

Washing should be dry before you put it in the dryer! They've got a neck if solid brass!
