Hoover think it's fine for a BASTARD heat pump dryer to take EIGHT HOURS to dry a load

Can I have a rant please? It would please me greatly if even one person was dissuaded from buying this godawful bastard dryer.

Which one? well that would be the Hoover Dynamic Mega DMHD1013A2 Freestanding Heat Pump Tumble Dryer, 10kg Load, A++ Energy Rating, that's which one!

So, this fucker takes all day to dry a load. If you're not in the house to keep switching it back on, the clothes sit there damp in between cycles and come out musty. Ugh.

So I timed it. 4 hours 15 minutes to dry two bath sheets, a bath towel and a hand towel. Bearing in mind this is a 10kg drum, so is meant for larger loads, but this was a modest load.

The longest programme on the dryer is 'all towels' and is 3 hours. At 3 hours the towels are nowhere near dry so I switch it back on and keep checking it. It takes 4 hours 15 as I said above.

Bought in April from JL. JL say no problem, ring hoover and they'll send an engineer.

Hoover say, "yeah...these heat pump dryers can take longer you know, but we'll send an engineer for which you will be charged if there's no issues".

So, I check this - am I going to be charged because heat pump dryers are supposed to take more than four hours to dry a load? She says, "let me just check how long it should take... yes my manager says they can take up to eight hours to dry a load."

EIGHT HOURS

EIGHT HOURS

And the longest cycle is 3 hours, so you have to be in the house to keep switching it back on. Twice.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! What's the fucking point in that! I could get my five year old to blow on it and it would dry quicker.

EIGHT HOURS!! So anything less than eight hours is not an issue with the machine. No wonder these things are rated as energy efficient because we end up not using it!

I looked at those heat pump ones when the door switch broke on our cheap vented through the wall dryer, they didn't look very good so I got a £10 part off eBay and DH mended ours instead. I'm glad we kept our old dryer. It never takes over an hour to dry a load.

TeddysMummy0 · 07/08/2021 18:13

Wish I’d seen this post 6 months ago!! Got the same dryer and it DOES take 8 hours to dry a 7kg load. Infuriating!!! Total waste of money.

Bythemillpond · 07/08/2021 19:12

We have a basic White Knight tumble dryer.
It has 2 settings Hot Air or Cool Air and a dial for how long you want it on.
Usually about 35-40 minutes

Our washing machine is set to a 38 minute wash and has a temperature gauge. So we can do a full load, washed dried, folded snd put away in well under 2 hours.

8 hours is ridiculous

Omg all of your electricity bills must be huge...im still drying all our washing outside

If I put washing outside to dry it would be wetter than when I took it out of the washing machine. Apart from a couple of days here and there it has rained and rained for months.

Namechangeforthis88 · 07/08/2021 20:11

I realise different households might have different needs, especially larger families, but I can't help thinking we have managed without a tumble dryer for 6 years. We have a pulley dryer mounted on the ceiling. Most stuff can be hung on the pulley in the evening and be dry the following morning.

Busymum778 · 28/09/2021 20:52

Omg this has just happened to me 3 times I’ve washed the same clothes as they come out after 4 hours ….damp and smelling!!!
What a joke

Quickchangeartiste · 28/09/2021 21:04

@Knope2020

I've just got rid of one like this afyer 5 bloody years!! I finally lost it one day after a load still being damp after 4 hours I ordered a Bosch one online and dh picked it up 20 mins later Oh my god It's a revalation!!
This. Just swapped a heat pump Siemens for a Bosch condenser after 5 years. I just didn’t have enough awake time to dry my washing ( in Scotland) Couldn’t face another winter…
SylvanasWindrunner · 28/09/2021 21:08

We have a cheapo Beko condenser and it's great. Everything comes out bone dry.

What's the point of the heat pump ones? Are they meant to be more efficient (which doesn't seem likely if you have to have it on for 8 hours for one load!)?

OMG - I had a second hand White Knight about 30 years ago. It finally died three months ago. If I could have got another, I would have! It was brilliant.

Slight derail here - but do you guys all use the tumble dryer only when you're at home?????

No I don't. I will quite often put it on and go to the shops. Meet a friend for a coffee etc, or set the timer for overnight so it switches on itself and finishes just as I get up.

In the real world I don't know anyone that supervises their tumble dryer and have only heard it on mumsmet.

SCha5193 · 22/08/2022 16:55

I’ve got a Hotpoint and my daughter a Miele but both take ages to dry and still feel damp when you get them out. If I have towels I put them on 4 hour wash and they are still damp when finished. Mind you the 4 hour wash doesn’t take 4 hours so why do they put that on? These heat pump dryers are supposed to save you money ha ha I can’t see that with the time you have to use. I hate mine and would go back to a vented one in a heartbeat but nowadays they are hard to find and they are expensive so can’t just bin it but I wish I’d never bought it.

SCha5193 · 22/08/2022 16:56

Should have read put on a 4 hour drying cycle.

Damnautocorrect · 22/08/2022 17:02

I’ve a zanussi heat pump so a hot point.
i try to avoid hotpoint as they were so shit with the recalls and fire issue on their old tumble dryers.

But it was second hand and very cheap due to a house move.

i can markedly see when I got it on my electric bills.
however £20 a year vs hundreds.
it is so so so slow. it doesn’t actually warm up and I think that’s the issue. It takes a day to tumble dry the bedding.

i only use it when I really have to.

it does make me wonder about heat pump house heating

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 22/08/2022 17:08

I have a newish LG heat pump dryer and a full load takes about 45 minutes.

Roselilly36 · 24/08/2022 07:48

That is ridiculous, the drier, must be faulty. I have a Bosch washer/dryer 10kg, that dries really quickly. Get onto JL to return the item.

Harrypotter69 · 04/01/2024 21:34

I have the same issue with an indiset condenser drier!! 5 hours to heat up!!! What's that all about??? If I'd have been told that in the 1st place I'd never had got one!!! Unbelievable???

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 12/04/2024 14:15

@BASTARDdryer I was just about to buy a hoover dryer.

Did yours get sorted in the end? Was it faulty or just rubbish?

poetryandwine · 12/04/2024 16:43

I have a fairly new, fairly expensive AEG condenser dryer. It uses sensors, so it will go off before the cycle should be finished if it decides the clothes are dry.

It likes damp clothes, no matter which setting you use. If you re-start it, it just goes off within a few minutes, presumably because it ‘knows’ the items are already dry.
Can anyone tell me what to do about this? TIA

Damnautocorrect · 12/04/2024 21:10

If you’ve got a timer setting you can put it on for two hours (the max on mine). It’s an absolute pain to keep putting it back on though

PickAChew · 12/04/2024 22:48

They shouldn't be taking more than 2 hours. My tired old John Lewis condenser dryer can dry a full load of towels in 2 hours.

For a small load, I do need to use the timer. And the sensor doesn't work on the synthetics setting with ds2's fleece blankets. I have to set te timer for 80 minutes for those.

CleanWorldGirl · 06/04/2025 21:33

I had a wonderful Bosch vented tumble drier for 20 years and when it finally broke down I went to John Lewis and was sold a Bosch top of the range condenser heat pump tumble drier. It’s the worst machine I have ever purchased, it takes over 4 hours to dry anything, and it’s still not dry. You cannot do small items, it just switches off. I complained to John Lewis and had a stand up argument with a very officious little man, who claimed there was nothing wrong with the machine and all tumble driers were now heat pumps. I have suffered for 3 years, having spent over £600 but am now ordering a condenser tumble drier but NOT a heat pump. The idea that heat pumps are somehow saving the planet is complete rubbish, they use triple the amount of electricity and cost a fortune to run. DO NOT BY ANYTHING THAT SAYS HEAT PUMP.

My brothers a Firefighter and his advice is never leave washing machines or tumble driers on if you're going out. He's seen far too often the devastation that can be caused by them

Not the fridge though... we trust the fridge.
