Ours has just broken down. It's a Samsung, 6 yrs old Shock.
It looks like the bearing has gone and drum broken and will cost almost same as new one to fix. Our previous WM was a Hotpoint and lasted 12yrs.

Would you recommend your model? I'm looking to spend about £300 no more. Anyone used a Zanussi before?

I currently have a Samsung. I like it overall but not thrilled about it, mainly because the bastard "eco bubble" function cannot be turned off like it could on a previous Samsung I had (which lasted all of 7 months). So overall wouldn't suggest a Samsung.

Never used a Zanussi washer, but they were regarded as very good back in the day. To be honest, it is very hit and miss with appliances these days and 3 to 5 years is considered good for longevity (5+ years is considered very good).

To make them as cheap as possible at point of sale, and for the fact that most appliance brands now are all owned but 2 or 3 firms (and for the fact most manufacturers/retailers want you to replace rather than fix), there really is no way of knowing of what you going to get.

For longevity, the only ones in a class of their own is Miele (but they are £600+). Bosch are also good - but I did hear that the entry level Bosch's (the ones that are around the £300 mark) aren't quite like the ones they sell in the higher range.

THIS site, and the guy who writes it talks a lot of sense if you want a snoop around.

Thank you for your comments. Yes I totally agree, appliances aren't built to last anymore. I somehow thought washing machines would have a life span of about 15-20yrs but clearly not. I haven't used a Miele before, only know about them the threads on here about vacuum cleaners, so it seems it's not just VC they're good at. But that's waaaay abound my budget. Whatever we do next, I'll definitely steer clear off Samsung.

I have a samsung eco bubble. I bought it for the 5 year guarantee and its lucky I did as it has already broken twice. Drum recently broke and was replaced. Grrrrr

JT05 · 26/07/2017 20:43

I have a John Lewis one. Just the same as the AEG it replaced, but cheaper. The best thing is the 1400 spin.

DontbeaDickaboutit · 26/07/2017 20:48

I have a Samsung ecobubble and it's shit. Doesn't clean at all.

TribalArts · 26/07/2017 21:05

Mine's an eco bubble as well. That's the other thing, the cleaning isn't brilliant is It?

OP posts:
Missingsleepandthecat · 26/07/2017 21:50

Ours is a 7kg Miele, 1400 spin. We've had it about 5 years, no problems other than when one of the DC's left something sharp in their pocket and I didnt realise until it ripped the seal but that was swiftly fixed by Miele.
Previously we had a Hotpoint Aqualtis which was good but I really wouldnt touch Indesit, Hotpoint or Whirlpool with a bargepole now, DD2 has a Beko which she loves.

TribalArts · 26/07/2017 21:54

Just looked at Miele's online. They costa fortune! Never be able to afford one at £1000 Envy

I have a 7kg LG - it's the best machine I've ever had (previous brands include Zanussi, Hoover, Indesit, Bosch). The direct drive makes it really quiet, and no jumping about on a high spin cycle. I think I spent about £325 on it, and it has been good as gold over the last 4/5 years.

Missingsleepandthecat · 26/07/2017 21:56

Posted too quick and didn't end my post properly, it was supposed to read: DD2 has a Beko which she loves, I used it recently when we house sat for her and its a great machine, think its either 6 or 7kg with a 1400 spin, not sure of the price though

TribalArts · 26/07/2017 22:02

Beko has really come a long way. I remember years ago they were the cheaper option, no history per se, no one knew wether they'd last or not. Now it seems they are a really big player with appliances. Same thing with LG.

So, I'm getting I shouldn't buy, Hotpoint, Zanussi, indesit...

Thanks for your comments. P,ease keep them coming, don't I'd last till the weekend without a new machine so need to make a decision quickly.

I have mostly Miele appliances (all bought last year) and I've had endless problems with them. The customer service has been absolutely awful and they are stupidly expensive.

Honestly I won't touch any of their products again with a barge pole.

I don't think the washing machine washes well. It balls up all of my sheets and knots the shirts together. The tumble dryer never dries anything properly even on the extra dry setting.

My cheapo washer dryer I had in my previous house washed and dried the bedsheets way better. Ok it might not last as long (who knows) but at 1/5th of the price of one of them I could buy a hell of a lot of them for the same cash.

Doowappydoo · 26/07/2017 22:05

I have the Which recommended Bosch, it was about £400. I've had it for nearly three years. It's just started making an awful noise on the spin cycle, I think it's the drum bearings and apparently they cost too much to fix. Not pleased, wouldn't buy one again Hmm

TribalArts · 26/07/2017 22:19

Oh no! My house of cards just came tumbling down with last two posts. Sounds like they're all shit. Might be better to forget about the brand name and just buy one within budget with fairly decent reviews. Assume it will need changing by 5-6yrs..

rabbit123 · 26/07/2017 22:22

Beko aren't bad for the price.

AEG & Zanussi are made by the same company. Good washers but long cycles.

LG are similar to Samsung but less the eco bubble, so that might be worth looking at?

Bosch & Miele are very good. Similar performance but the Miele's are better built.

Avoid Hoover, Hotpoint, Candy & Indesit.

silkpyjamasallday · 27/07/2017 11:02

We have a zanussi, it's pretty shit to be honest, it was here when we moved in though. Even after we've cleaned it (it doesn't have a cleaning cycle) it leaves streaks on clothes sometimes grey but sometimes orangey. I assume there is rust somewhere inside it that's doing it. I can put up with it for a few years until we move though. My parents have a Miele which is fantastic, and luckily they live nearby so I can take precious things to be washed there. I think you get what you pay for with appliances they certainly aren't made as well as they used to be, same with boilers.

silkpyjamasallday · 27/07/2017 11:03

Oh and it makes the house shake when it's on a spin cycle Angry

TribalArts · 27/07/2017 11:12

A PP said the Miele machines that are good are the top end price ones? What would you say would be a reasonable minimum price to get a Miele?

OP posts:
rabbit123 · 27/07/2017 11:14

Any Miele is good. We got the cheapest one on the market at the time, which was about £500 I think. It's 9 years old now and never misses a beat.

DramaAlpaca · 27/07/2017 11:16

Has anyone mentioned Siemens yet? I have one and it's great. It's a few years old & still going strong (touch wood). Someone I know who fixes washing machines once advised me to go for a basic model of a good brand so that you get decent quality but without all the bells & whistles which tend to go wrong. I took his advice & went for a basic Siemens and would recommend it.
