Last thread was huge, so have started a new one.

I am working through books; where is everyone else?

I have two weeks off soon & have high hopes for progress

Hi @Lanaa; make up is on my list too - I hardly use any and have loads of unused stuff I got for free, so I plan to parcel it up and send to the "Give and Make Up" charity

Thank you for the link. I'll give my spares to them too!

ChampagneCommunist · 12/06/2017 19:37

Off work on holiday, so doing books. Fiction, cookbooks & phonebooks done

Could I join you ladies? I have just bought the book and have started reading. Have never tried the Kondo method before so am looking forward to it. We moved house 2.5 years ago and still have an entire bedroom that is known as the room of doom. I really want to claim it back! We still don't have our storage spaces sorted here yet - no cupboards in utility room, no coat hooks or shoe racks, no wardrobe for dh and I, no garden shed, no mantelpiece or hall tables- so there are a lot of items languishing in the room of doom...but at least if I can start with discarding I will hopefully be clearer on what type of storage areas I need to create in our home for the items that survive the purge!

Anyway sorry for the long intro! Looking forward to getting started!

OculusReparo · 13/06/2017 13:44

Long time lurker, do post here and there...can I also join? Would very much like to use the Kondo method in my apartment but having an elderly father who likes to hoard and likes filling up "empty spaces" with his car boot sale hauls, can get frustrating even though I know he means well. I do enjoy my father's company but he gets really upset when I try to give things away to charity or he'll say that he'll do it and then "forgets" about it and then puts it back Hmm

Sorry for derailing the thread, just looking for ways to use the Kondo method and at the same time maintain the peace at home.

ChampagneCommunist · 14/06/2017 08:24

Not sure how you'd tackle your father's hoarding. Can he restrict it to his area of the home?

Can I join you, please? I started this about 1.5 years ago but then had DC2 so gave it up for a while - ready to get started again.

Have just kondo'd most of my clothes, though have a giant black bin bag of scarves that I just can't bring myself to look in. Feeling daunted at the prospect of komono (i.e. most of my house) and haven't even made it to books yet.

Thanks for the make-up link champagne. I find having a worthy place to give stuff to makes it actually quite enjoyable to pass it on - I quickly gave up on ebaying as found I just wasn't making any money and it was too much hassle. Not to mention the fact that it means things hang around in plastic bags for ages!

I'm looking forward to all the additional life benefits kondo talks about in the book! Anyone got any inspiring stories from their own experience?

ChampagneCommunist · 14/06/2017 17:56

I like doing it in categories as I also chuck out other stuff I see around the house which doesn't spark joy, so (hopefully) when I get to the hard komono categories, there will already be less stuff

B1rdonawire · 15/06/2017 11:52

Been doing a bit of electronic kondo-ing, attacking the inbox mountains for work and home. Have got them both down to zero, and now pounce on anything new coming in, deal with it and file or delete it Grin

Re "inspiring stories" I think kondo-ing my house gave me the mental space to look around and make bolder plans for the future. Letting go of things, or being ready to let go of them, was liberating. It was after doing it that I decided to look into starting a family through adoption (I thought I wouldn't get to have a family after DH died), and 18 months later my daughter moved in.

HesterGreysGarden · 17/06/2017 18:43

Wow, B1rd that really is inspirational!! What a wonderful, wonderful outcome from a bit of tidying.

champagne I am also throwing out as I go along in the hopes the categories will be more manageable when I get to them.

The main reason I can't face the prospect of my giant bag of scarves is because many of them belonged to my mil who died about 7 years ago. I was very close to her. Quite a lot of the clutter in our house (but definitely not all!) consists of beautiful things from her house - but they really don't look beautiful in our mess!

willymcwill · 18/06/2017 18:10

I'm about to start Kondo-ing again; started about a year ago but then building work and going back to work put everything on hold. Now about to go on maternity leave early (10 days left at work!) so I'm determined to start again.

Which apps have people used? I do like a good app. Need to find the book; since the building work loads of my books have been stored away so i have no idea where it is... and buying a new one seems anti-Kondo 😂

Combining this with starting the fly lady routine again; got to use this nesting instinct for some good after all!

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 23/06/2017 16:02

B1rd - that's amazing!
I am in the process of kondoing a lot of emotional baggage and feel very liberated today so I'm taking advantage of this feeling and going to try and make a dent in the chaos that is my home!!
Good luck everyone Flowers

Cellardoor23 · 23/06/2017 16:14

I'm trying to get rid of about 200 dvd's, not mine but my partners. It's taken me a while but I think I've finally convinced him. What's the best way to get rid of them? Is music magpie any good?

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 23/06/2017 16:23

I spend a very long afternoon inputting the codes from a huge pile cds into music magpie and at the end of it I was offered about £10. I decided it wasn't worth any more effort on my part so I sent them to the charity shop. 200 dvds would quite likely get you considerably more and the app might be more straightforward than when I tried 2 years ago so probably worth a shot.

Leeloo2 · 27/06/2017 21:28

I had a similar experience to Hiccup when I tried to sell thousands of as-new novels a couple of years ago. Most weren't accepted by the online buying app and those that were offered around 25p! I gave up and took the whole lot to the charity shops.

I'm trying to get back on the kondo wagon after making some progress a couple of years ago.

Toys are a big source of clutter for me, as I have 2 kids and am a childminder. It's been hard to get rid of things my kids have outgrown as I never know what little ones I'll have in the future and what interests they'll have, plus I've had lots of some types of toy as sometimes I've had 4 or 5 little ones all wanting to play with something, so needed duplicates!

But things are getting beyond cluttered as even though I've slowly been getting rid of toys, of course more come in to replace them.

I'm finding that the toys that are 'too nice to get rid of' which are in storage boxes (to be rotated with toys we have out) may as well be gone, as I never remember they're there and they get buried under other stuff and forgotten. Plus we have less space to play as all the boxes take up physical (and mental) space in the house.

So today I went through a huge box of puppets, some I've sorted into story bags, some I've added to other collections to actually use instead of just store and a few of the best I've put online to sell. And 5 bags of these toys and other stuff I took to the charity shop.

The frustrating part is that you can't even see a tiny space where the stuff has gone. But I'm hoping that if I keep going that eventually it will make a difference...

How's everyone else doing with the decluttering?

Cellardoor23 · 27/06/2017 22:20

Yeah, my DP went through his dvd's the other day, some of them were only worth 1p! Just over 200 dvds and they're worth about £34 in total. I suppose it's better than nothing, but I would hate to think how much he has spent on them over the years.

squiggletea · 27/06/2017 22:49

200 DVDs is a lot of viewing pleasure though. Marie would say that their purpose was to be watched and that is what your DP did (I guess??)

If they were watched that was £10 spent on an exciting plot and a bit of escapism-probably cheaper than a night out! You are left with a case and a shiny disc but that's not what your partner really bought...

Cellardoor23 · 27/06/2017 23:18

Yes I know. I'm not really into dvd's that much or watching tv at all really. I know he bought them because that's what he enjoys, but I've been with him for just over 6 years now and most of those dvd's have just sat in boxes, stored away.

We've kept some that we know we'll still watch, but I didn't see the point in having them and not watching them at all.

Cellardoor23 · 27/06/2017 23:20

Some not even opened!

ChampagneCommunist · 27/06/2017 23:52

Just done non-fiction; just magazines & children's fiction & that is books done.

I'm using the Clutterless App; anyone else use that one?

AnthonyPandy · 27/06/2017 23:53

There is a Facebook group that is starting a week by week kondo sort out, I think it starts in July and lasts for about 41 weeks. I have signed up for it and am hoping the slow speed encourages me to keep up.

Leeloo2 · 29/06/2017 12:18

Do you have a link @Anthonypandy?

I was a bit disheartened to see a toy I'd donated (6 years old but near perfect condition) broken and missing half its pieces in the charity shop. I guess I need to travel a bit further to one that looks after the toys better.

On the plus side I've just tidied the shelves I'd decluttered from and the toys are much easier to find, better organised and more space out instead of higgledy-piggledy and squashed in.

Leeloo2 this should be it. You have to join the group first, and it starts next week I think. There's a spreadsheet that details what is being decluttered in which week.

Leeloo2 · 29/06/2017 18:18

Thanks Anthony, I've applied to join. :)

NotCitrus · 29/06/2017 18:49

I've found that the bits that I Kondoed and found places for are still in place two years later.

Which has improved my life no end.

Unfortunately there's still a never-ending stream of building materials clogging up much of the house and tools all over where I want to keep things, both of which I can't really reduce. Toys and paper would be good to do more of though.
