what's your kitchen table made of?

we're looking to buy a new kitchen table - prefarably oval and preferably able to withstand the usual kitchen/family ill-treatment. the problem with nice wooden ones is I'd do my nut worrying about it. what other alternatives are there? and where?

Pine top. Rustic style. Painted legs. Knocks and bumps add to the character and the legs can always be given a fresh coat of paint when they get really minging.

red indian solid wood...its heavy and chunky with matching 4 chairs that weighed a ton!

Ours is/was red solid wood which had been waxed - which looked absolutely fab when new, but as I didn't look after it properly it now looks awful - especially the water marks on it - splash a bit of water, or spill a drink and you're sunk.

Just ordered a simple solid oak one, which the woman assures me will be fine.

Same as you Pruni - but i'm sure ours cost less.

Even old heavy expensive wooden tables show signs of use, surely? I don't go woith pristine kitchen tables or anything when you have young children

(sorry have only read the last post)
