I'm wondering what people do that is really stingey but they honestly don't need to?

We are able to afford new dish cloths and sponges but I always wash them in the washing machine Blush until they shrink to nothing or the sponge looks like someone ate it.

My dad used to put cheap kitchen spray in my mums expensive bottle and she never knew 😂

My husband waters down hand soap? That really annoys me.

Ok I'll think of more. But tell me what you lot do!

"I use a fry lite lid as a moon cup" you just won this thread Grin
I actually spat my drink over my iPad
I realise you were joking

I'm loving this! A lot of pp have said about cutting up toothpaste of makeup tubes to get the dregs out - I do this with mayo bottles. Take a kitchen knife to it (which is strangely satisfying sawing it up) then use the bottom half as a dipping bowl for my chips or whatever.

Balance the old bottle of washing up liquid or handwash over the top of the new one to get every drop out.

Save ds's old toothbrushes for cleaning hard to reach areas like the tiled bathroom corners etc.

Reuse ds old sun cream the next year for me and DH. I know it's not factor 50 after 7 or 8 months, but we o my need factor 20 or 30 so reckon it's prob down to that.

Use flour/sugar/food colourings etc for ever, take no notice of the use by date. On veg too, if it's not soft and squishy or got mould on it it's fine to eat!

Reuse sandwich bags for weeks on end, as long as they don't get any wet filling on them it's only a few breadcrumbs!

Cakescakescakes · 09/03/2017 21:19

If I make a meal and there are left over dregs of sauce e.g. Some leftover curry sauce with all the meat etc eaten then I freeze it in a bag. Then i just got some cooked chicken, defrost the sauce and have another ready made meal.

Not housekeeping related but I buy really cheap wine on the basis that I can't taste the difference. I'm on a Mission From God to find the cheapest nastiest wine when I enter a supermarket. I could probably afford to go over £5 a bottle but - no.

ferriswheel · 09/03/2017 21:22

This is an amazing thread! Great tips.

KatieScarlett · 09/03/2017 21:23

I will not throw out bath towels until they have holes in them from wear.
I buy plenty of new towels so have a huge towel surplus mountain that could easily dry our street. For a week. Ditto face flannels.
I have no problem throwing out bed linen or clothes. I'm all about the scabby towels.

fulloffunreally · 09/03/2017 21:27

@Hassled,

my very frugal friend Anne is a total tightwad. She poured wine for us one night and it was delish. (we couldn't believe she had actually bought WINE) Red of course, but she had put a drop of blackcurrant cordial in the bottom of our glasses, so we were ecstatic at the blackcurrant notes!

Not really, but it was lovely. We all laughed when she said it was the cheapo from the German place that sells perfectly good wine for a pound dearer. Not good enough for our Anne though!

Laska5772 · 09/03/2017 21:27

Sorry hassled life is really far too short to drink cheap wine ..Use the savings from other stuff to buy better wine!

Golden Rules 1,2,3,4 & 5 _ Savings should always be used on treats!

Laska5772 · 09/03/2017 21:29

Lidl sell fine wine cheaper than many places . (get the stuff from the wooden boxes)

Laska5772 · 09/03/2017 21:31

Lidl Hortus Gin is also excellent! Gin

Macblondie · 09/03/2017 21:32

My parents made us recycle Christmas wrapping paper when we were younger. Every year we had to open our presents so carefully so to not get any rips in the paper. We had to make a neat pile of the flattened wrapping paper in the corner of the livingroom ready to get the sellotape cut off for next year... this took some of the enjoyment out of opening our presents! They also still cut up the Christmas cards they were given the previous year to make gift tags.

My late grandfather used to hoard plastic bags before they used to cost 5p. He once told me that he'd rather have a bag full of plastic bags given to him than any gifts. Once, a carer chucked his stash of bags out and he was furious! We thought he was crazy at the time... but now I totally understand!

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/03/2017 21:34

penelope £2.50 a kilo vs £4 or £5 a kilo (plus a kilo of mushrooms is more volume than a kilo of mince). But you made me check!
Isn't that interesting Smile. Here I can get beef mince for $8 a kilo but mushrooms are $10.50 a kilo. And I hope you didn't find me too pedantic; it's just that I LOVE mushrooms!! Grin

tldr · 09/03/2017 21:47

penelope not at all. but others might ban us from the thread. 😂

Mummysh0rtlegs · 09/03/2017 21:53

I save money by not buying disgusting fungus. I bulk out my meals with dust, much nicer than a mushroom.

BearFoxBear · 09/03/2017 22:07

I bulk out mince with oatmeal, even cheaper and noone (specifically dh the oatmeal hater) has ever noticed Grin add a tin of cheap baked beans too and it's heaven!

Cakescakescakes · 09/03/2017 22:08

Red lentils are best for bulking out mince!

enchantmentandlove · 09/03/2017 22:12

Ah yes- I also use old toothbrushes for cleaning between tiles! Also cheap conditioner instead of shaving cream for my legs.

LanaorAna1 · 09/03/2017 22:30

For skincare, never spend a lot on stuff you wash off.

For hair, remember fabric conditioner is chemically identical to hair conditioner but with different scent.

Cleaning silver with salt and foil is a million times cheaper and less effort than using silver polish.

Destinysdaughter · 09/03/2017 22:44

Don't waste money on expensive iPods. Simply think of your favourite tune and hum it. If you want to "switch tracks", simply think of another song you like and hum that instead.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 09/03/2017 23:02

😍 @destinysdaughter

fulloffunreally · 09/03/2017 23:22

Where do you all put the money saved?

I doubt many would even notice unless it is put by in a jar to show how many pennies have been saved.

That may produce a result for all this fekkin frugality, but the reality probably is that nothing results except tightness forever.

Foxynatnat · 09/03/2017 23:48

I buy smart price coffee and top up the nescafe.. dp doesn't know and has never mentioned it being different

PlymouthMaid1 · 09/03/2017 23:56

Great thread. I do a lot of of these. My original contribution is that I save the net bags from onions, tomatoes etc and when I have about eight to ten, I squish and tie them into a pan scrubber. I did like the rubber glove bands idea a lot.

Yamadori · 10/03/2017 00:05

It's just dawned on me that I am sitting here reading this... whilst wearing a battered tatty old jumper I've had since 1992 Grin

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 10/03/2017 00:06

Severed, I use a couple of little bags of haribo as balloon weights. It's less for me to clear up as which kid doesn't want a balloon. With sweets attached. :o

I gather all the last bits of uneaten bread, unsweetened cereal, left over garlic bread etc and blitz it in the processor with random herbs and spices. I keep it in the freezer and use it to make pork/chicken burgers, nuggets, potato wedges etc.
