What is the stingiest shit you do for no reason?

I'm wondering what people do that is really stingey but they honestly don't need to?

We are able to afford new dish cloths and sponges but I always wash them in the washing machine Blush until they shrink to nothing or the sponge looks like someone ate it.

My dad used to put cheap kitchen spray in my mums expensive bottle and she never knew 😂

My husband waters down hand soap? That really annoys me.

Ok I'll think of more. But tell me what you lot do!

this will out me but my mum and dad only ever use half a sheet of kitchen roll at one time I do that, the half that gets pushed back in the top irritates my son too Grin I'll use a full sheet ++ depending on the job.

toffeeboffin · 08/03/2017 20:16

I break cotton buds in two if I'm only using one half.

DevelopingDetritus · 08/03/2017 20:17

Last years sun cream is probably fine for this year as sun lotion. My sun lotion has a 12 month after opening expire date Sad To tell you the truth I think it's the previous Summer.

alabasterangel · 08/03/2017 20:27

Cut washing up sponges in half.

When working from home I boil a full kettle and put the remainder in a thermos and then don't boil the kettle again all day.

I too wash dishcloths.

When I finish a scented jar candle which won't relight I scrape out the remaining wax and use it in a burner instead.

Cut buttons off properly ruined clothes and use the clothes for rags and save the buttons for spares and sewing.

Use value nappy bags for my bathroom bin liners (vastly cheaper).

Empty fabric conditioner bottles are rinsed with water and with 1cm of water in the bottom placed on a radiator - makes the room smell nice.

When I empty a washing up bottle I unscrew the new one and the old one and leave the old one perched upside down on the new one for the last dregs to drip in.

I had a lodger years ago who would fill his empty marmite jar with boiling water to have a nice drink with the last scrapings!

I could tell you how to make washable fabric mentrual pads from old towels and fabric, but I sense that's a step too far?!

Mummysh0rtlegs · 08/03/2017 20:37

I use an old fry light lid as a mooncup.

(I don't really)

AprilLudgateDwyer · 08/03/2017 20:50

You can use old suntsn lotion as long as it hasn't gone grainy!

I wash all my j cloths and sponges in the machine and turn hand wash into foam hand wash by mixing it with water. I put it in a old method foam soap bottle I've had for about 4 years!

Deux · 08/03/2017 20:53

I've found my people. 😇

I don't have anything funny OP I'm afraid.

But something I do do that makes people look at me oddly is chop up old rubber gloves into elastic bands.

They're brilliant. Really stretchy and really strong if you make them wide enough. In fact you can make thin ones and thick ones. You just cut slices from the old gloves, working from the bottom wrist end of the glove up. So you have rings of rubber glove.

DH scoffed at first but not now. Oh no, he's had to admit they're useful. I store them on a little cup hook in the utility room. 🙂

Photo so you can all share the delight.

My stingey "thing" was going to wilko for sawdust bedding for the hamsters as it's 50p there and £2 everywhere else, my mum pointed out that spending £3 on the bus to get to wilko negated any saving I'm a nob Grin

mowgelijeffs · 08/03/2017 20:59

Mum, you dirty thing you.

Deux.... I LOVE this. May give it a go. I use hair clips and pegs to shut crisp bags etc but that's only because I don't have enough elastic bands. Great idea.

Also, someone mentioned home made sanitary towels. I am not opposed to these at all. It's just that it's not stingy.

Watered down ketchup and 3 year old hot water bottle on the other hand!!

I get great pleasure from re-using gift bags, the same bags have been circulating round my group of close friends for years

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 08/03/2017 21:08

As mentioned upthread a dash of vinegar in the sauce bottles to water them down.

Milk in the soup tin swished around to get it all out.

I have a silicone spatula 50p from Ikea and it's amazingly bendy. So you can ram it in a small mayo or jam jar and really scrape an extra tablespoon out. Grin

I never used Rubber gloves in my hair but I used to cut my tights and stocking tops for the same thing.

I've been known to cut open the hoover bag, empty in the bin and then reseal with staples and masking tape. Blush

Hoppinggreen · 08/03/2017 21:12

I'm overly possessive of 5p bags.
I would happily give anyone 5p but don't touch my bags!!!

Mummysh0rtlegs · 08/03/2017 21:16

I always take extra napkins from mcdonalds to keep in the car for wiping condensation from the windscreen (that I then use to damp dust the dashboard..)

MollyRedskirts · 08/03/2017 21:41

Hehe, I do more of these things too. Reading them jogged my memory.

I love Marmite spaghetti, so I swill out the jar and add it to the pasta cooking water.

I cut squares of kitchen towels into four, to use to dry DS's bum. Using a whole one is a waste.

DH is addicted to softener and uses huge amounts. I water it down. It lasts longer and it's better for the washing machine too. I was told by a repairman that the little pipes that feed the softener into the drum from the drawer are too thin on most machines, so thick softener clogs it all up and makes the drawer more prone to getting mouldy.

I love IKEA vanilla candles but don't live near one, so I take wax out of tea lights and pour the leftover vanilla wax in, then pop the wick in. I do it with Lily Flame candles too.

MollyRedskirts · 08/03/2017 21:44

Oh, and I only use Truvia sweetener which most places don't provide. Starbucks do, so I take loads and keep them in my purse to use in other coffee places that have inferior sweetener. Blush

I take black pepper sachets too and keep those in my purse, because I put it on most things.

SouthernComforts · 08/03/2017 21:48

Destinysdaughter you have inspired me!!

What is the stingiest shit you do for no reason?
PickAChew · 08/03/2017 21:50

Well, I wash dishcloths and sponges, but that's because it's rather wasteful of resources to throw them away the minute they get manky. I use cloth dish cloths, but find those cellulose sponges are better for mopping up spills etc.

I'm sure I could use something more expensive than the 50p bottle of vinegar I use to clean the draining board, but I find it most effective.

yorkshirepuddingandroastbeef · 08/03/2017 21:57

PickAChew, you've been robbed! White vinegar is 39p in Tesco. Grin

Sparklydress · 08/03/2017 21:59

Deux no, that is funny.

I am strangely fascinated by you now

DevelopingDetritus · 08/03/2017 22:06

I covert plastic bags too, Ocado buy them off me.

ProlificLurker · 08/03/2017 22:12

yorkshirepudding you've been robbed! 21p in Aldi Grin

ProlificLurker · 08/03/2017 22:15

My dad takes broken trouser/skirt coat hangers apart and uses the grippy parts to hold food packets, etc closed.

I just use pegs

BuffyFan · 08/03/2017 22:18

I've always cut up old tights to make hair ties. My Dad will reuse cling film, it's a standing joke. I don't use fabric softener any more at all and don't miss it! (Sorry that last one isn't silly OP). We have a ketchup pocket in the car where we keep all the little packets of ketchup you get in fast food places 😂

Deux · 08/03/2017 22:22

Just for you Sparklydress. A photo of my rubber bands in action. .

I also find myriad uses for masking tape. It makes great temporary labels.

What is the stingiest shit you do for no reason?
enchantmentandlove · 08/03/2017 22:26

I cut value cloths and sponges in half for cleaning
I use dd's value nappy bags as bin liners in the bathroom (so much cheaper!)
We get so many charity bags through our door - at least one every other day - so I use them as bin bags in dd's nappy bin
Dh used to be adamant that candles would warm up our living room in our old flat, so we didn't need to put the heating on (I put the heating on)
I keep ribbons from packaging to use in crafts
I wash my makeup brushes in baby shampoo
