DD split milk on my bedroom carpet & i know it's no use - but I AM crying!

Help me please to find a way to get rid of the stench of spilt milk. DD split milk on MY bedroom carpet & then tried to clean it up with air freshener & some Andrex 'moist towelettes' whilst denying all knowledge of why the carpet was soaking wet! (she is nearly 12 ffs)

It stinks! Please tell me how I can get rid of it - I don't know if I'll be able to sleep for the god-awful smell.

Strong solution of bio washing powder in warm water or a pet stain/odour remover to break down the milk. Use an old towel to soak up excess moisture.

Sprinkle bicarbonate soda on it to neutralise the smell.

What wowfudge said. You may need to do it twice though.

Also if cleaning it yourself doesn't work, look at getting a carpet cleaning person in. There is a great guy local to us who cleans carpets and you can guarantee that every couple of days there will be a posting on the local mums forum saying 'help my DC has spilt something smelly on my carpet, I need the number of the carpet guy!' I reckon he makes a good living restoring family carpet harmony.

If biological powder doesn't work (and that would be my first thought too) zoflora may be worth a shot? I used it on a fresh milk spill (before it started to smell) and it never reached the smelly stage - it's a disinfectant so may kill the bacteria that make the smell? Or may just be so damned overpowering that you can't smell anything else!

Having had a number of previous instances of vomit on DD's carpet (middle of the night instances), she spilt leftover hot chocolate on the carpet last week and we only found it on Saturday morning as we prepared to go away overnight. I got out the last of the bag of vanish carpet stuff, shook it over and brushed it in, left it for 30 odd hours while we were away, and hovered it up yesterday - it took up the smell and also a lot of the brown chocolate colour stain on a cream carpet.

We had previously tried all sorts and this works the best for us.

Thanks for all the tips! I always forget about bicarbonate of soda. Will try that & washing powder.

Just wish she had owned up at the time!
