Neat and clean in 2017 - it's the January Flylady thread

Star HAPPY NEW YEAR Star

Welcome to the January Flylady thread, where we try and maintain our nests in good order by following the Flylady method. We'll post links each day to the Flylady website for the babysteps, daily focus and extra missions in the current zone. The habit of the month is shining your sink (or whatever other place in your home motivates you).

If you are just starting, Flylady recommends decluttering the weekly zone before doing the detailed cleaning and not to do too much at once!

All are welcome, so feel free to join us anytime.

Happy new year all.

A slow day here after a late night of eating, drinking and watching Jools Holland...

Ta da's

  • Last of the Christmas decs sorted and put away, with a pile bagged up for the bin, and a box of stuff for the charity shop.
  • Washing sorted into piles all over the landing (but after reading that other thread I won't put any in now until tomorrowBlush).
  • Cat sorted. Puppy walked and exhausted.
  • Lunch made and post-lunch kitchen clean up done.
  • Huge pan of scouse bubbling on the hob for tea.

That's me done for today.

Plan for tomorrow is to sort my wardrobe. I need to buy some nice wooden hangars, get rid of a few bits and organise it properly so I can see what I've got and wear it all instead of wearing the same few things over and over.

I feel like I'll be able to get back to it and Flying properly once DH is back at work on Tuesday and once DS is back to school, which isn't until 9th Jan!

After a few months lurking and bits of flying I am determined that thus year I will get the house sorted. My sink is shined and downstairs has been sorted, tidied and hoovered/mopped. I will do upstairs tomorrow and hopefully be allowed to take the tree down before it sheds its remaining needles over the carpet I've just hoovered 😞

Delurking for 5 mins to say Happy New Year to all the regulars and a welcome to the newbies. I try very hard to spend only 15 mins / day on MN otherwise nothing else gets done. So I lurk and enjoy but posting is rare. Many thanks to you all. Flylady routines have made my house better but vast improvements (esp tidying and decluttering) still needed. I use the Flyhelper app which I find good. I need an extra energy-filled 5 hours a day!

I'm in.
No Ta Das for today, I've done fuck all.
Starting again tomorrow.
Have been on the Flylady threads previously (NC recently) but always found that I was spendng too much time on the thread and not enough doing the actual flying. So I may not post much.

Not done much today as DD has been vomiting half the night but I have booked an oven cleaner. Always done it myself previously but I'm working more hours and we have more chance of winning the lottery than DH actually doing it.

Wow I am already behind! Hello everyone new and old! I'm just going to jump straight in with the very little I have achieved today...

Ta das
Hung up washing
Started dinner
Wiped kitchen side
Emptied dishwasher
Put more Christmas presents away
Washing up

We've also watched two Disney films and I'm starting to feel a bit worried about getting back into a routine when dh goes back to work on Tuesday! How will I cope?!

Purple how was the parsnip soup? I hate parsnips but love parsnip soup...Strange I know. I just found an old parsnip in my fridge too but I've chucked it in with the roast. I also threw away some mouldy mushrooms Blush Christmas has meant I haven't used as many vegetables as usual!

FoolandFitz · 01/01/2017 17:10

fox I thought we were never behind Wink

Another ta-da:
Put in key dates into family calendar that lives in the kitchen
about to make dinner

I made sure to clean all the major rooms before I went out last night so I started the new year off with a fresh start and no major jobs hanging over me.

And it feels so much better lying here recovering in a nice clean home!

Looking forward to being tidy in 2017.

Happy new year all Flowers

True fooland good point!

Gah my attempts at cooking a proper meal tonight have failed. I have been on holiday mode too long. Someone has knocked the oven switch and turned the oven up ridiculously high and burnt the pork. Dh blamed me and I blamed him. We now have burnt roast dinner and we are all grumpy!

Put clean clothes away
More washing

DP making roast beef for dinner and I'll have a nice long shower with Christmas smelly stuff before I go to bed.

foxes it was really nice. Parsnip soup is one of my favourites. This one was a spicy parsnip version but I also really like parsnip and apple (which was recommended to me by a poster on here). My cheapo hand blender was a great little purchase a few years ago.

We've just had leftover spicy parsnip and sweet potato soup (i'm trying to clear out the freezer) - its my favourite!

Another newbie joining!

I've decided it's time to really sort myself, family and house out! We moved a couple of months ago and still have boxes everywhere, so should be easy to sort and declutter as I get through those. Just packed all the Christmas stuff away today and then had a relaxing afternoon. Baby steps!

Omg where has this been all my life!
What do you use for the powdered cleaner bit in the sink shining stages as I can't find powdered cleaner Confused

Just use whatever you've got annoyinglyhappy. I think it's an American thing. Smile

Since I moved my sink is horrible stained enamel which never shines. Envious of people with nice sinks! I can't wait to change it at some point.

Joining in too as a newbie. Although i have had the odd failed attempt at flylady before.

DH is the tidy one here so i want to make sure i pull my weight too and as he is a surface clean kind of tidier, I need to tackle the big stuff.

I have had an afternoon without the DC's and have a huge list of tadas as a result. Spent hours on the family finances to plan for the year. Changed the DCs beds, updated the family calender and have the shiniest sinks ever!

Evening all, lovely to see everyone so full of enthusiasm and gung-ho for the new year.

Have you read the start of Flylady's book, where the fledgling talks about being in a hotel like her home? I'm currently in a clean and tidy(ish) room, perfectly chilled glass of white wine, big fluffy towels - oh wait, I am in a hotel room. My house is not like this. I tidied the kitchen this morning by hiding stuff in the dishwasher Grin

Best not to go too mad early on, will only burn ourselves out ...

Links for Monday next, bit early but taking the opportunity while I have it.

I suspect the powdered cleaner is Barkeepers Friend. Use a cream cleaner if you have one, it will do the job. I also miss my metal sink, a cream composite one does not have 'bling' in the shine stakes!

I am off for an early night but thought I would check in first. This thread has got really busy really quickly.

Hi Honu

I have shined my sink so hopefully will have a positive start tomorrow. I also completed ds2s paperwork for the new cm he starts with on Tuesday. I would usually leave it until the last minute, but I really want to be more on top of things this year. Apart from that I have just generally pottered and tidied. I am really trying to subscribe to the philosophy of baby steps instead of perfection.

Hello, Happy New Year to you all! Big welcome to all newbies, I joined the thread in September and find it a much more relaxed way of following Flylady.

Instanthit, sounds as if it has worked really well for you - any tips?! Cotswold, Grin at hotel room. I have read that bit many times and dream of my house being like that.

Ta da:-
Decluttered (nearly finished so am putting it as a ta da) DD1's box of jewellery/ random toys / tat. Got rid of hardly anything the broken things and organised it a bit more. She has her 'special jewellery (kids' sparkly stuff) in a separate box anyway and hardly ever wears this stuff.
Decluttered some children's clothes and have some baby bits to give to friends who are expecting.
DD1 asleep
Decluttered some of the fridge by having snack tea.
Still loving my new home routines app so have been giving myself stars for completed tasks all day Smile.
Got up early so managed an hour of work on portfolio - half of one essay rewritten.

To do:-
Get DD2 to sleep - she is currently doing the Hokey Cokey in bed Hmm.
Finish the jewellery box
Put away bags from today - had packed toys etc to keep DDs occupied while we were there.
Calendar check - hopefully with prosecco as is New Year's Day Smile.
Start planning DD2's party invites
Sit on sofa and drink prosecco.

Really hoping to get some more study done before all this but not looking likely with DD2 still awake.

Some of you sound very organised - I am in awe!
