Anyone want to join me for a school holiday decluttering thread?

Slowly but surely our little house has developed a problem. She's run out of space!

Added to the problem that we are all a bit crap about putting things away after we are finished with them and I am a childminder, something has got to give and some serious getting rid has to happen.

I have a fairly quiet school holidays approaching so plan to sort it out in time for a stress free start to the school year.

Would anyone like to join me?

Well done on Toy Mountain.

I have rationalised the tools after clearing out the shed. So. Many. Screwdrivers.

OneArt · 03/08/2016 16:17

Sorted out DC's clothes (including school uniform). I have one bin bag for the charity shop, plus bags for the second hand uniform sale / friend's DC / bin.

Study next. I'll attempt to clear the random crap that gathers on the top of the filing cabinets.

Thanks building2016. It sounds like most people are getting on really well and I love reading about everyone's progress. :)

grumpypug · 03/08/2016 20:13

I've had a day off today. Took the kids out instead - don't feel guilty at all!

I did go to ikea yesterday for some baskets to finish our bedroom shelves - only been waiting about 2 yrs!!

Clothes done (mine) 5 bin bags to charity and 1 bin bag of shoes.

Bedroom is looking much less cluttered, definitely a positive!

Equimum · 05/08/2016 17:31

Gosh, I am seriously behind. Some of you are doing amazing amounts!

Today, I have managed to go through the storage unit in the bathroom and reduce the amount of things we will never use. I have also moved all the half empty bottles which we might use at some point to the window sill. I hope this will remind us to use them.

We have an Expedit/ Kallax unit in the childrens' room. I predominantly use it for boxed toys or toys which have a large component. So, one box contains random boxed construction sets (e.g. An M&D wood set, a digger that you screw together, gears etc) and another contains the farm, including all the animals and the big barn. I also have one which contains smaller plastic storage boxes of small Playmobil. This looks better than just stacking be plastic boxes, and also means I can just throw any random bits I find into the top of the IKEA box.

Good news: sold old boiler and some immaculate baby items my parents found they had (didn't need for ds, got my own for dd).
Not so good: no-one wants my surplus sofa, or at least hasn;t turned up, ditto other large items, so will have to drive to the dump sometime soon (so that's 2 1/2 hours of my life sucked away)

DP has added a dozen T-shirts to the textile recycling bag, and I've got rid of a recycling bag worth of paper. Need to clear out entire living room, but bloody job applications are taking all my child-free time...

wobblywonderwoman · 05/08/2016 19:20

I hadn't got much done lately as was tackling outdoors but yesterday I sorted all my bedlinen and towels - that type of thing. Another huge press empty.
All washing and ironing up to date.

Apologies I've been off on holiday bit back now and ready to carry on!

Will just scoot back and read the thread :-)

leeloo I have made the transition! My kallax is bought, built and organised. Some of the boxes just have one type like happyland and other boxes have smaller storage inside. I tend to put these up higher and they are for my use only when setting up activites. So one might be maths and i use zip wallets to put different things in. Will post a pic shortly.

We love our Kallax have loads in the playroom - just needs a good sort through as there's some stuff that doesn't get played with.

I've finished my bedroom. DH has been doing the garden and when he came in he started looking through my charity shop bag, pulling things out (my stuff!!) telling me that things were still new (had some of those fabric shelves that clip into the hanging rail). I've had them about 3 years and not used them so decided to get rid and he's trying to keep them. And he calls me the hoarder! Well, he got an ear full and then left me to it.

I've also made a start on my office. I'm hoping to be finished the office by about Wednesday and then make a start on the kids toys. Slow work but I'm only getting an hour here and there to get anything done.

Leeloo2 · 06/08/2016 16:49

Oh well done NickNacks, I'm glad it's done and that you're pleased. :) I'd love to see photos when you have time thanks.

bearleftmonkeyright · 06/08/2016 16:54

I am place marking. My DD has gone away for a week and my two DS will be happy in each other's company but I can't start till Monday. I want three bin bags gone by the end of next week. That's the plan and now I've written it down I will have to do it. I would appreciate anyone kicking me up the arse Grin

woodhill · 06/08/2016 17:39

I've been cleaning out some kitchen cupboards ridiculous amount of stuff I don't use.

NickNacks · 07/08/2016 20:34

Here's inside my phonics and maths box- i have labelled zip wallets with Bingo or Pairs games etc. They're actually tidier than the photos give credit to!

I have labels that can be removed at the weekend and toys are divided by category. The kids pick up very quickly where everything belongs and lots of activities at laid out in the setting by me anyway.

Ooh can I join? We also have a v small house, hardly any storage and too much stuff. Have been trying to get on top of it for a while but really have to get it cracked this summer.

Tonight I need to do something about my bedroom, I'm going to have a glass of wine, MN a bit then do an hour's worth of putting things away.

Tomorrow I am planning to trade a morning's childcare with DH (he doesn't know this yet ;)) and spend an hour in each of the upstairs rooms just doing bits and pieces and trying to find ways of fitting boxes of stuff into the few cupboards we do have.

I have a load of clothes and other things to ebay but just can't seem to get myself moving on listing them. I've never done it before and there's a bit of a psychological barrier. But they are all too high value/unworn etc. to just send to the charity shop. Sadly, post-baby I am several dress sizes bigger and there's no chance of wearing them!

Need to go on a diet too and declutter myself more generally!

MyGreenSofa · 07/08/2016 21:42

Nicknacks - that's very impressive!

Muddledupme · 07/08/2016 23:03

Can I join Ive already got three full sacks to drop to the chazza tomorrow

blacktiger · 08/08/2016 07:09

Oh I've fallen off the wagon the last few days as we've been redecorating the living room. Will try to get back into it today.

Well done everyone who is doing well!

Zippidydoodah · 09/08/2016 10:19

NickNacks- are you a childminder? I am a teacher and have always wanted, but never quite got round, to arrange our toys like this with labels etc. I've photographed the contents of drawers and even printed them off but that's as far as I got!

I'd like to join the thread, please! Attempted to cull cuddly toys yesterday- didn't get too far Confused

bearleftmonkeyright · 09/08/2016 11:03

One bag of clothes got rid of yesterday. I think I have two bags more now full of childrens clothes and random bits from my wardrobe. I have been following this thread but have had an overwhelming feeling of not knowing wear to start. Since my teenage DD has gone away for a week on cadet camp feeling a lot more motivated. Will finish this and start on sorting out paperwork tomorrow. There's about five boxes in an utter mess.

grumpypug · 09/08/2016 11:12

I finally feel like I'm making a bit of headway. Done - my bedroom, under stairs cupboard, bathroom and office. I'm going to do the eldest's bedroom today.

I have a box of books (DH took a few back out - even though he NEVER reads!! Angry) and a bag of 'stuff' to send to the charity shop.

I have 2 bags of school things to take in to school one day.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel - well, over the mountain of toys that's also on the declutter list!!

itshappenedagain · 09/08/2016 15:50

I've had a productive day after a few days of not doing much...getting rid of what I had already cleared helped a lot. Charity shop were very grateful and anything I've put in eBay has gone within the first hour.
Today I'm back in the kitchen, clearing everything including oping down the walls and washing the windows. Once that's all done it's onto under the stairs which is a lot clearer as we got most of the stuff out of there.
Trip to the top tomorrow then will start culling more stuff from the kids rooms.
Bad news though is I still have laundry to gold and put away...can't have it all I suppose!

BaBaBaBoomBoom · 09/08/2016 17:30

Just read the thread, and cleared two bin bags of clothes to go to cash for clothes!

You guys motivated me to actually do something, so thought I'd stay!

RhubarbCrumbled · 09/08/2016 18:00

I'm following this thread to keep me motivated on my breakup/ moving house declutter. I've got a whole life to sort out (plus two kids to sort out too!) but it's all starting to come together and people are actually noticing the difference! Being ruthless and hard hearted seems to be working. Go us for getting stuck in!

bearleftmonkeyright · 09/08/2016 20:44

Got rid of 5 bags today!
