My loo smells of wee

WellTidy · 13/07/2016 10:49

How can I get rid of the smell please? It is a separate loo, in its own small room, so separate from the rest of the bathroom. Flooring is amtico. I've cleaned the loo and mopped the floor but I can still smell it and its driving me nuts.

Not in my experience Dame, never had a plastic seat smell of wee unless there was wee on it.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 13/07/2016 13:00

I have way too many things to do daily to add another to the list ... Where will the madness end? But then my loos don't stink - perhaps they're like hair, if you wash them less they get less dirty?

AnthonyPandy · 13/07/2016 13:01

When you get a new loo seat, take it off completely every few weeks and wash all the fittings, screws etc. There's quite a lot of stuff that collects there.

You do realise that other people have different experiences, don't you?Grin

RipeningApples · 13/07/2016 13:02

I work fulltime and long hours. Our loos get a squirt of bleach on my to bed. Try new seat and floor mat thing. If it doesn't help it's a new floor but you will have to industrial clean what's under the old floor first.

I also use those little stick on things and "bloo". I don't think our loos smell.

brodchengretchen · 13/07/2016 13:18

When a toilet is flushed the 'doings' are forced into a mix with the water to briefly form an aerosol vapour, whilst the heavier elements go straight down the pan.

Always flush with the lid closed unless you are ok with dilute urine and other material being on the toilet fittings, walls and floor. Jeyes fluid?

CatherineDeB · 13/07/2016 13:20

doings Grin. You must have a good flush brodchen.

PartiallyStars · 13/07/2016 13:22

Once a week here. Daily? What madness is this?

peggyundercrackers · 13/07/2016 13:40

the only way to really find out where the smell is coming from is to get down on hands and knees and have a good sniff about - the thought of doing that makes me gag though and dont envy anyone who has to do this.

WellTidy · 13/07/2016 13:49

thanks peggy. I am not looking forward to tonight! Every prevention measure under the sun will be taken once this is sorted as I won't want to have to do it again.

Well today I am 64 and yes I do clean my loos every day to avoid smells. There are however areas of my house that I am very lax about Wink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/07/2016 14:06

Maybe sprinkling bicarb around the base and leaving overnight might absorb the smell?

WellTidy · 13/07/2016 14:19

good idea Dame thank you, I will definitely do that alongside the zoflora.

I'd recommend scrubbing down floor, lowest part of walls, behind loo etc with a warm solution of biological detergent, and leaving to soak.

DH also says taking the loo hinges off and apart can help, especially if you have a soft close seat.

Personally I reckon the smell's got into our tile grouting.

trulys25 · 17/07/2016 22:02

I've had this exact problem today. Cleaned thoroughly (again), but bathroom still smells like a public toilet!

Just got on my hands and knees smelling the wall, floor in desperation - the culprit... the fittings attaching seat/lid to the base! They stink! Only bit of the bathroom I can't clean as I can't get it unscrewed.

One job for one of the stinky males of the house tomorrow!!

Ankleswingers · 17/07/2016 22:04

I have 3 boys... I clean my loo at LEAST twice a day. Confused

Wallywobbles · 17/07/2016 22:05

Remove the loo seat. It's under the seat back where it attaches to the porcelain. And scrub with a hand and scrubby sponge under the rim. Grim but worth it.

mineofuselessinformation · 17/07/2016 22:09

Do you have a steam cleaner? Give all if the hinges and crevices of the loo seat a good blast if you do.

BeenThereTooSEL · 17/07/2016 22:30

Plunge as much water away as possible and pour a bottle of coke down there overnight

user1464934899 · 18/07/2016 07:22

Would a toilet seat like this be any good to you?

SuburbanRhonda · 18/07/2016 07:31

How about getting the people responsible to clean it?

I can't believe the number of people suggesting it's the OP's job to clean up the toilet that the males leave dirty.

BertieBotts · 18/07/2016 07:48

It's a bloke thing. It's just physics, a stream of wee going from adult penis height to toilet bowl is going to splash miniscule drops off in all directions. So that's hinges, back of toilet seat, walls around the toilet, and dribbles down the front and sides of the bowl. Grim. When I lived with my mum and sister we never cleaned the toilet every day, but with DH and DS, when I had a toilet with a base it had to be cleaned every day or every other day. It's actually better now we have one of those weird floating ones without a base.

And YY they should be the ones responsible for cleaning it but I find in reality I'm the only one who cares Hmm and it drives me insane yet DH can happily sit in a bath next to the festering grossness.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 18/07/2016 07:51

Double check you don't have a slow leak from the waste pipe connected to the toilet like we did.
