Is there right way to hang clothes on a washing line?

Do you hang clothes from the hem or the shoulder/waistband? Does it matter?

DH hung the washing out one way (pegged at hems) and I went out and changed it to the other way, because it felt wrong the way he had done it. I am aware that was a crazy thing to do, but it has made me wonder... is there a right way?

It would depend on how much washing there was. I might alternate them with the pink ones if I had to use them. Grin

Most of my pegs are wood but I have a few plastic ones and I mix and match totally randomly. I do put thick things at the sunniest end but otherwise no sirting or ordering. I sort as I take down, walk along and gather one person's stuff, fold and pile, go back for the next person's. I really CBA to sort through bags of damp washing to sort it onto the line as I am usually in a rush to get to work at that time of day.

High fives GrouchyKiwiGrin.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 20:12

Oh My, Grouchy. I hardly like to ask how you order the washing! Grin

MrsJayy · 14/04/2016 20:24

I to tops to bottom bottom to tops however i inherited a rotary drier in my new garden and bog all seems to dry properly why is that ?

Bamaluz · 14/04/2016 20:25

Don't joke about wanting to rehang the neighbour's washing, mine irritates me just to look at it.
Jeans hung over the line at the waistband but not opened, so there are four layers of fabric, how do they ever dry? Towels in half, socks bunched, tops hung by shoulders.

jobrum · 14/04/2016 20:26

I started pegging jeans up by the bottom hem of the legs, that way the thick waist blows around more so dries quicker!

GrouchyKiwi · 14/04/2016 20:26

Just from smallest to biggest, cozie. Smallest items in the middle of the rotary washing line, largest on the outside layers. Means I have to get the big items out of the machine first, but also means that when I bring it in (smallest to largest) it's in the correct order for folding.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 20:28

Phew - so no colour coding among the washing then? Smile

AuntieMaggie · 14/04/2016 20:34

shouldwestayorshouldwego dp does the hanging in layers thing too but what's even worse is when he hangs stuff up he doesn't hang it straight (so the seams are at the sides iyswim) so everything looks like it's just been thrown at the line and he takes no care in where he pegs it - wouldn't be the first time I've rewashed stuff because he's pegged the front of a top or something has dried so creased it's just easier!

albertcampionscat · 14/04/2016 20:34

Tops on naice wooden coathangers before going on line, surely?

sleeplessinmybedroom · 14/04/2016 20:34

I hang tops from the bottom and trousers without a heavy waist band from the top. Jeans etc get hung from the bottom or I find the waist doesn't dry. I have to match pegs and get very twitchy if I think about not matching. I love to hang things out in order of towels/bedding, Dp's stuff, my stuff, Ds's stuff and Dd's stuff so it's in size order. It takes ages so if I'm in a rush which I am 99% of the time I have to grit my teeth and just hang it out as it comes out of the basket. When I walk back in the house I turn around and look at the washing blowing in the breeze. Then every time I go in the dining room I have a little look. I hate when Dp puts the washing out he does it all wrong.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/04/2016 20:43

No, cozie, just in my wardrobe. And drawers. And the children's wardrobes and drawers.

Pigeonpost · 14/04/2016 20:47

I don't really mind how things are hung (although usually tops by the bottom and bottoms by the bottom too) but I get the rage if clothes are hung out to dry inside out.

Mummylin · 14/04/2016 20:51

When I had a hysterectomy, Dh decided to change the bed for when I came home. When I got home I looked on the line and the sheets had been folded numerous times to make a small square. This apparently was to save folding them when he got them in. It was awful as I physically couldn't go and alter them.

P1nkP0ppy · 14/04/2016 20:57

Everything from the bottom, most things washed inside out and random peg colours/hanging sequence little hope really I guess!

borntobequiet · 14/04/2016 21:03

Trousers hung inside out so pocket linings dry properly.

sleeplessinmybedroom · 14/04/2016 21:06

Oh yes I make sure nothing is inside out and that all the clothes are facing the same way.

paxillin · 14/04/2016 21:09

Inside out is important. Otherwise clothes get the washed out look quickly, especially black clothes. Except wites obviously, they benefit from sun bleaching.

unlucky83 · 14/04/2016 21:11

I use to do tops from bottom and bottoms from top -but have just recently started hanging out jeans/stretchy trousers/pj bottoms from the bottom and it makes a big difference to how quickly they dry...
I have a rotary airer so the smallest things have to go in the middle -big things won't fit...and I also take it all out of the machine into a basket and sort it on the kitchen table then drape it over one shoulder -saves constantly bending down (I have a peg bag that ties around my waist -I have many different types of pegs (wooden & plastic clip ones and dolly pegs) and the only consideration is if it is something a big thicker I'll use a sturdier peg...
Things that will stretch I peg under the arms, trousers that could get peg marks I hang from the waist.
Socks and pants on one of those multiple hanger things - socks in pairs with bigger things - my pants Wink in the middle.
And something for a rotary airer that I picked up from looking at a neighbour's washing (I've always had a single line before ) - things like sheets folded in half then peg using the hems - so onto an inner line then it hangs down in the middle, then peg the other hem to an outer line. So kind of upside down, spread over two or more lines. If it is too big to do that - I do hem, hang down and bring up over a line then hang down and peg up hem. Duvet covers the same but leave the opening open so the wind blow through...

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 21:19

born - you're absolutely right. I recall that I do hang trousers inside out. (Unless they're sweats of course. )

justdontevenfuckingstart · 14/04/2016 21:26

Dh has just come in and said 'what the hell are you reading on there this time' I said you really don't want to know. 'god you really are sad, if I had known about this I wouldn't have been with you' Bad hanging is a known thing in our house. The girls just throw stuff on the airers. I have to rehang as it makes me really uncomfortable. Socks in pairs flattened with heels in. Everything from the bottom, no dual pegging. I have a mix of pegs but you have to use the same ones on each garment. Minimal turnover at the top. My mum 'helps' sometimes. I want to bludgeon her with my peg basket.

didireallysaythat · 14/04/2016 21:39

In a drunken, can't move off the sofa, let's surf, moment (its not just me, is it?) I found a video by Anthea Turner telling me (just me, noone else) how to arrange my airing cupboard and how to peg things on the line. I remember thinking at the time (and there had been quite a lot of gin consumed) "doesn't she know I don't have an airing cupboard?"

Peg things so there's the largest orifice is at the top.

There was some wisdom about ironing but I suspect that was too much for me (I don't have an iron) so I went to sleep.

CremeEggThief · 14/04/2016 22:09

Oh yes, wash things inside out, but they must be turned the proper way before being hung on the line!

TheFlyingFauxPas · 14/04/2016 22:41

I always wash and dry stuff inside out and put away the right way. I have a dress/shirt thing that annoys me from h and m. Its bright and flowery but it's faded on the outside. Always washed inside out. It's lovely and bright on the inside. I think it's been made using wrong side of fabric 😞

A friend has a really weird way of hanging her trousers on the line. One peg in waistband one on bottom of leg. It upsets me so 😞
