Is there right way to hang clothes on a washing line?

Do you hang clothes from the hem or the shoulder/waistband? Does it matter?

DH hung the washing out one way (pegged at hems) and I went out and changed it to the other way, because it felt wrong the way he had done it. I am aware that was a crazy thing to do, but it has made me wonder... is there a right way?

PS - unless it's a fleece. They have no peg rules of course. Wink

GrouchyKiwi · 14/04/2016 17:34

Re towels: depends on the amount of wind and how warm it is. If it's a hot, blustery day then a towel chain is sensible. If it's a normal day then I peg them separately.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 14/04/2016 17:42

I peg towels and everything else separately unless I'm running out of pegs. DH does the chain thing which irritates me as the overlapping bits don't always dry and you get a chain of dangly, annoying, half hung item all the way along as you unpeg.

VulcanWoman2 · 14/04/2016 18:11

I mix wooden and plastic pegs Shock waists of bottoms, bottoms of tops, less noticeable peg marks then.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 18:23

You mean you use whatever comes out of the peg bag first, even with non-fleecy things??

That would be quite dreadful.

onemouseplace · 14/04/2016 18:32

I really don't like wooden pegs - the ones my Mum used to have which were just two legs rather than a snapping mechanism were awful - the sound and feel they made on damp washing still sets my teeth on edge.

I am another rehanger - tops from bottom/ bottoms from top/ unless delicate material which will stretch out of shape then over the middle pegged under arms.

If I have loads of time I even hang stuff out in the order I will put it away when I bring it in to save me time (ironing pile/ then rooms in order).

Hanging out washing is the only household task I actively enjoy!

VulcanWoman2 · 14/04/2016 18:34

Well, I had a word with myself to mix the pegs up and not be so obsessive, still annoys me a bit though.

starfishmummy · 14/04/2016 18:36

Tops from the bottom.
DH used to peg his shirts at the top. He never thought to wipe the line and would leave the pegs on the line getting dirty. Result was peg and line marks along the shoulders of his shirts.

notquitegrownup2 · 14/04/2016 18:38

Yy to tops folded over the line and pegged under the arms, and yy to trousers and pants from the waistband. But first, you check which direction the wind is blowing, and make sure that the hole at the top of the trousers is facing into the wind, so that it blows into the trousers, inflating them with nice fresh air.

And then you have to know your line (assuming you have lines not rotary thingies.) Clothes/towels dry quicker at one end or the other, depending on where catches the sun the most. So the thick towels and jumpers have to go in or near the hot spot!

I can see the AIBU now -

'Am I unreasonable to want to re-hang my neighbour's washing because they've hung it the WRONG WAY? Grin

NewLife4Me · 14/04/2016 18:44

I do shirts and bottoms from the bottom and then change them round after a while.
Socks on a little peg thing, undies one peg from side of pants, and boxers from the leg then change to waist.
Anybody who does it different is wrong, or too busy to swap washing around Grin

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 18:45

Please don't take that post seriously! Grin

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 14/04/2016 18:52

Another underarm pegger here.

And all my pegs match Grin

CremeEggThief · 14/04/2016 18:55

Matching pegs, nothing inside out, preferably similar items next to each other, all hung as straight as you can them. It takes time.

This is why I only hang out if I am 100% sure they will get completely cupboard dry before taking them in.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 18:58

Oh I always put items like sweaters inside out.

RidersOnTheStorm · 14/04/2016 19:01

FFS. Pegs have to match.

If using wooden ones they must be of the same type and plastic ones must be the same type and colour.

Everyone knows that.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 19:13

I have two colours of plastic pegs and they can be used interchangeably.

(Mind you, I have been thinking of going to all wooden.)

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 19:15

Strike a blow for spontaneity, Riders. Use more than one colour of plastic. Grin

hejsvejs · 14/04/2016 19:23

Trousers from the bottom or the waist won't dry as quick.

Everything inside out so the sun doesn't bleach it.

Toos from the bottom.

Don't give a flying fuck if the pegs don't match.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 14/04/2016 19:25

I have to rehang washing as dh just can't seem to understand that scrunching them 4 or 6 layers deep and overlapping whole garments won't actually result in them drying. I still think that he should hang them out even if I have to rehang them. Otherwise he might think that doing something badly means he shouldn't keep practising.

DarkBlueEyes · 14/04/2016 19:30

Has anyone else mentioned hanging in person order? Or am I the only nutter that does this. I have a six line washing line and hang everyone's stuff on one line each. So,mine line for me, one line for DH and one line for each Of the DDs. Large linen at the back. I fold from the line and that means I unpeg each line at a time, then fold and out I to the basket, so I have a reddy made pile of washing for each family member. And I pair socks hanging out too so it's quick to unpeg and pair.

predicting everyone else runs away now in the face of such control freakery

Not bother d about matching pegs but I do hang trousers by the waistband and shirts by their tails, t shirts etc by the shoulders or hem depending on the fabric.

Sheets folded in half and hung by the hems to make it easy to fold. Blush

CremeEggThief · 14/04/2016 19:35

I think that's a brilliant idea, Darkblueeyes.

I have yellow plastic pegs and green plastic pegs. Not only do I insist on matching pegs on every item, but I actually alternate peg colours on items. So yellow, green, yellow etc.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/04/2016 19:45

I do that, CremeEgg. I have three colours of plastic peg, and they must alternate (red, orange, white or whatever) but they must always match when two or more are used on the same item of clothing. DH doesn't do this and most often I don't fix that.

My mother has about 5 different colours of peg and on her rotary washing line I always use the same colour for each layer. It goes purple in the middle, then green, yellow, blue and pink.

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 19:47

What would you do if someone put some white pegs into the peg bag, Grouchy?

cozietoesie · 14/04/2016 19:48

Sorry - into your mother's peg bag that is.
