First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

I listen to quite a few radio 4 podcasts, but have never really ventured beyond that. I'm the opposite of you Eintein - I can't bear Youtube unless I need a demonstration of how to do something, even then I'd prefer static diagrams and instructions in text. It drives me potty if I click on links on say the BBC website and it turns out to be a videoclip of someone talking instead of text. It's interesting how different forms of media suit different people.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 10/03/2016 11:11

Oh i don't watch them for tutorials etc. I watch them to be enabled in patterns and colours and supplies. I now want to buy all the things and to make all the things Blush Just keeps me a bit sane when I can't sleep, also motivates me to finish crafting projects I am struggling on.

Fizrim · 10/03/2016 12:11

Afternoon all, I've been out this morning and run my errands. A closed post office caused a bit of a diversion on the way back but I managed to put it to good use < determined >.

Laundry continue unabated (where is it all coming from?) really must schedule some ironing tomorrow. DD got an invite to something this morning at school on a completely different day than we were expecting, she was quite anxious if we could make it (I said I'd make sure we were free).

Better get on with some stuff inside the house before lunch.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 10/03/2016 12:16

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Automated call systems
On hold music
Departments that don't speak to each other
Schools.

Thank god for the odd human being I have encountered that is actually really helpful! Unfortunately I have the rages AngryAngryAngryAngry

ta da
12 different phone calls,
6 different sets of holding music,
2 transfers to departments that were the wrong ones,
no answers or solutions to problem.
2 potential sources for help that are now waited on.
3 phone numbers no longer existing including 2 organisations that have disappeared and 1 which just doesn't update online information. Hmm
make doctor's appointment
deliver person to destination

To do
fuck knows I intend to ignore this list today!

fuzzpig · 10/03/2016 14:21

just popping on to say DH got the job :) he has an extra week off after our holiday and then starts :)

needastrongone · 10/03/2016 15:42

Brilliant news fuzz Well done to your DH.

Oh those mornings are SO frustrating einstein Angry

I have used today for 'errand day', so I have done a tip run, various shopping related chores, which have taken a lot of my day up.

ta da
Some phone calls.
Aldi.
Asda.
Pick up a Next order.
Nails done
Tip.
Animals
Empty run of washing machine

to do
Floor.
Paperwork.
Cook tea.
Put away some shopping.

I missed MN last night, as I had an insanely early night!

Greymalkin · 10/03/2016 16:39

WhoKnows / Einstein re podcasts, I think I might stick with the Radio 4 ones and listen out for recommendations for others

Fuzz - fantastic for your DH! And great that you get him home for a bit longer too.

Fiz and need - well done on all the errands!

I've had another marathon FLYing session in the kitchen today - emptied all my food cupboards completely, washed and dried and rearranged. I found so many packets (mostly baking ingredients) that were years out of date Blush

DS was continually under my feet wanting to build castles out of tins but he had fun so that was ok. I don't want to wish-away DS's younger years, but it is so hard to do messy or organisational type jobs with his curiosity and wanting to 'help' hinder getting in the way!

My cleaner came today as well, don't know how I would manage without her!

Also:
Fed cats
Made doctors appointment
Stripped bed
Washed and dried pillow and mattress protectors
Took DS to playgroup

Still to do
Remake bed
Dinner
More laundry

Well done to Mr Fuzz on the job! He's in high demand (which is always a nice feeling).

Taken DD out to her after-school thing tonight. She is eyeing up another after-school thing for her only free night, I'm kind of pleased as I think she'd enjoy it but I'm a bit cheesed off about being the chauffeur service and having no evenings myself Sad. Ho hum.

Chocolate Cake Biscuit Chocolate Cake Biscuit

Flight plan for Friday 11th March

We're still hanging out in The Kitchen

Today’s mission is to wipe down the doors of your kitchen cabinets

The baby step is to write out some inspirational quotes if you go in for that sort of thing

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Friday focus is to declutter your purse, handbag and car

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 10/03/2016 21:37

Personally my favourite inspirational quote is:
Do not annoy the dragon. You are crunchy and taste good with ketchup

Not entirely certain that is what the fat fairy has in mind Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 10/03/2016 22:45

My favourite inspirational quote is the one from Helen Mirren

"aged 70, if I could give my 20 year old self one piece of advice it would be to use the phrase "fuck off" more often"

However that doesn't help with housework.

I was pleased to note today that I had done the mission yesterday (well, the lower cupboards anyway, the high up ones don't get so grubby).

I decided to stay at home today, there wasn't really much I needed to do at work and they probably didn't want my germs, so I got on with a fairly lengthy to do list of admin jobs (renew car insurance etc). Also planted a few seeds, two more loads of washing, ferried DCs about all over the place, found a holiday to book and delegated the booking to DH, Peak District here we come. Oh and cleaned the loo and basin and gave the kitchen sink a proper shine rather than just a wipe over with a cloth.

Also popped into town, I was feeling tired and needed to justify taking the car for a half mile level journey so I took a couple of bags of stuff to the charity shop. Am finding myself with a bag shortage now, I resent giving away 5p carrier bags to charity shops and am almost out of the ones I accumulated before the charge came in

Fuzz - that's greta news for you and DH about the job, hope you manage to get the house decluttered too.

Einstein - grrr to chasing fruitless appointments etc, so frustrating.

Grey - well done on the cupboard clear out. I've found that doing menu planning and organising shopping more means that the stuff in the cupboards doesn't get so out of date and stacked up, but I do seem to have loads of duplicate spices as I keep buying the same ones over and over for some reason.

Needa - that sounds like a productive set of errands, I like "nails done"!

Fiz - I must also schedule some ironing tomorrow, I'll do mine if you do yours!

needastrongone · 11/03/2016 09:18

I do see my nails as a chore Grin But that's because I am not great at sitting down for long, but I am so glad I get them done iyswim?!

Ta Do
Paperwork.
Clean out car.
Vacuum.
Strip a bed (or two)
Garden Centre for some seeds.
Clear out chickens.
Make tea.

Ta Da
Procrasinate! Vastly.

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 11/03/2016 14:33

Hi. Can I join this thread?
I had a quick look at the flylady stuff and I think I need it!
I need the organisation and actually like the date night and saving Saturday for fun ideas.
I'll start properly on Monday.

Fizrim · 11/03/2016 15:18

Hi Spoon, welcome aboard.

I haven't done any ironing yet who, but I could do with a top for tonight so I may turn it on shortly. Just for a bit, mind ...

Have been shopping again this morning, and prepped tea a bit. Going out tonight to help out at an event but hoping to get away fairly sharpish. I don't really want to be there for more than an hour tbh! But they are a bit stuck for help in one area.

Just washing up from the tea prep, DD has an after-school club so have an extra 45 mins.

See you later!

fuzzpig · 11/03/2016 18:28

Thanks folks :)

Feeling tired today as I've somewhat crashed after the craziness of the last few weeks! But had a nice day with my parents today. No Flying though!

Fizrim · 11/03/2016 22:22

I managed to go out without doing any ironing < result >. I was out for a bit longer than expected and DD developed a headache, which DH dealt with well but she's now asking for me to take 'lots of care' of her tomorrow. She may be coming down with something, there are a few bugs going around (obviously, I hope not).

The Pinot Grigot is going down a little too well tonight, and I have only just noticed that need mentioned chickens - lovely. We have a relative who keeps chickens and DD loves to collect the eggs from the coop.

Take it easy fuzz, sometimes when the stress ends it can really hit you harder than when you were going through it, if that makes sense. At the time you just press on, when you get a chance to reflect though - boom!

Fiz returns to her Pinot and passes Wine around

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 11/03/2016 22:33

I didn't do my ironing either, took myself off to the nearest big town for shopping instead, then a bit of studying a few emails and phonecalls and then it was school tun time.

Beautiful warm day here, took my books out on the patio to work this afternoon and made a quick detour to the allotment o the way back to school. Also planted some seeds at home.

Fuzz - hope you feel better tomorrow.
Fiz - hope your DD doesn't have any lurgies.
Needa - you've inspired me to do my nails tonight.
Woodenspoon - welcome, good plan to start on a Monday.

Have a good weekend everyone.

midlifehope · 11/03/2016 23:13

Can I join please? I've been following fly lady for a while - new bigger house and baby so it's really needed now!

Today I swished and swiped
Shined sink and did kitchen
Dog walk
School run.....
Took the whole day!

BlueEyeshadow · 11/03/2016 23:14

I have done stuff today. Mostly admin, and a bit of tidying. But also went swimming, and have had Wine this evening. :)

Night!

fuzzpig · 11/03/2016 23:50

Indeed Fiz wise words, I do think it is often when you relax that a lot of things finally hit you. Same reason that people often end up with colds when they go on their annual leave IME! DH is knackered bless him. I'm quite glad for his sake that we've ended up here at mum's for a couple of days, as it's meant he could come home and just chill without having to run around looking after the rest of us, and he can get a proper lie in tomorrow.

In other news I did more editing tonight and apart from putting the picture pages in, it's DONE! Woohoo. I'll have to send it off tomorrow (I need the manuscript to check the picture locations, and it's at home) and then I'll need to fix all the illustrations as jpgs including captions, but they don't need to be done until we're back from our trip. And that's it. DONE. I spoke to her today to apologise that this last bit has taken longer than expected, but she already knew about all the job stuff and what's been going on with my health, and she insisted that I wasn't to worry about it (I did offer to start the next lot without payment, as an apology, but she is refusing!) - she really is a lovely lovely person. It was a total fluke that I ended up doing this work for her but it's made me very happy, not just because of the earnings. :)

So. Crazy busy weekend ahead - tomorrow I've got to pack up all the stuff we've brought to mum's (2 nights and the room is a shit tip!), print stuff for holiday, head back to ours with my parents so they can see DD dancing (she got her first proper ballroom shoes today, she's in love with them!). Then home for housework, will need to unpack and wash this lot of stuff, then start packing for the holiday. Then on Sunday DSD is coming round for help with coursework, hence wanting to get the other stuff out of the way tomorrow so I can give my full attention to helping her. It feels like all I've been doing lately is proofreading - the book, and all three of my DSCs have asked for help with it lately! I don't mind though, I'm glad I can help (it's me, not DH, as even DD is better with grammar than he is :o) and it's lovely to get an insight into the work they're doing. :)

Should really try and sleep now!

fuzzpig · 11/03/2016 23:51

And welcome to our new Fledglings! Cake :)

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 12/03/2016 02:17

Hello and welcome to the thread newbies!!!

Today has been, yeah lets just summarise as: slept, scared postie, didn't fly, insomnia. As you can see it has been incredibly productive. Wink

Ds has been warned tomo we are taming his room and running errands, including school shoe shopping. Impressed this last pair has lasted so long, almost a record for him as he is so rough with his shoes. Hmm

Not been hugely productive after the day of frustrations. It really killed all motivation off. But every time I walk into the utility room I get kinda startled by the blinding cleaness of it after wednesday's antiprocrastination tackling of the room. It is lovely. I have a long list of things that I want to accomplish this month. Including taming the wash room (large cupboard), the bathroom (which need attacking with bicarb and bleach and a new ventilation fan) and actually get the sorting of paperwork done too. Clearly I am being optomistic and only 1 or 2 of the things might happen, because lets be honest paperwork?! Not one of my favourite jobs. so you will be seeing that on my to do list for April and may and probably until christmas

I had a whole bunch of personal messages that I wanted to include but my brain is like nope. So I am going to call it quits, attempt sleep at a reasonable time tonight (ie not 6am or not at all) and just wishing all the fledglings have good weekends

needastrongone · 12/03/2016 08:47

My nails have colour changing gel on them, they are very swish Smile

It's a stunning day, so I am going to have a shower and get sorted now.

I actually accomplished all my jobs yesterday, thanks to this thread keeping me focused. I even cleared out 2 kitchen cupboards!

Today will be less productive as the DC have activities.

Ta Da
Dishwasher on.
Washing on.
Pots washed.

To do
Sweep and vac.
Garden.
Riding lesson DD.
Snow boarding lesson DD.
Swap washing.
Unload dishwasher.
Animals.
Poss another bed change.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 12/03/2016 08:53

Think I need to see a photo Needa. Here are mine, went for a neutral as it's not so critical to get them perfect, but I love deep or bright colours too.

Pottering this morning, we always seem to slack off a bit on tidying by Thurs/Fri every week so I'm trying to get the house straight.

Flylady's fledglings spring clean your nests! March '16
Toffeewhirl · 12/03/2016 08:56

Sorry I've been AWOL Blush. New job has been eventful, to say the least, with three members of staff in my department handing in their notice within the last month, mainly because of the boss's personality disorder and poor management skills. So I'm now struggling to cover two peoples' work, plus some of the work of the third person, as well as coping with above-mentioned boss.

Not surprisingly, I am job hunting again.

Also, the head of DS1's special-needs school has left (or was pushed out) without giving any notice and the deputy is on long-term sick leave, so the school is in crisis, but, hopefully, not closing down. So had to attend a meeting about that earlier this week.

DS2 still blissfully happy at his new school .

House is a mess because DH has been unwell for a couple of days. He's having a day out with friends today (and definitely needs a break from childcare and domestic chores) and I'm actually looking forward to domesticity for a day. Will come back here to report on progress.

fuzz - great news about your DH's new job. The editing sounds interesting...? How's the home ed going?
