Flylady's fledglings spring clean your nests! March '16

First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

Roof is 3/4 on and asbestos sheets gone for good Grin Skip has also gone so it feels good that a huge amount of rubbish isn't going back in the garage. Still a bit to go through but 90% clutter free.

Not done much else:

  • emptied & refilled dishwasher
  • clothes on airer
  • new LED lightbulbs gone in
  • new lamps set up in our bedroom
YesEinsteinsMumDid · 15/03/2016 23:53

SC do those security people have orders to shoot people who are tempting to destroy society? can we shoot a few uk politicans for the good of society?

to do
work
long nap
watch a bit of tv with ds
fall asleep again
wake up and eat breakfast, lunch and tea in 1 sitting Hmm
Sort hot water bottle and extra blankets. Too hot for heating too cold to sleep without some extra heat

Is it wrong I am really really really looking forwards to the clocks going forwards?

elliepac · 16/03/2016 06:35

Morning all. I did manage some more flying last night and felt a little smug that I had done all I should have done according to the Fat Fairy. There is a bona fode first.

grey have been to York lots before. My family are from there and spent a lot of time there as a child visiting grandparents. Though that meant we didn't really do touristy stuff. Now it is one of my favouritr places to visit. We were staying in a hotel right in front of the Minster. It was just gorgeous. needs you cannot be that far from me as I am only about an hour from York.

sc i looked at your list and promptly fainted. A list that einstein would be proud of

einstein i too cannot wait for clocks to go forward. Light nights make me happy.

purple yay for roof, sounds as if massive progress is being madeSmile.

And whoever it was who said they dreamed of being clutter free like me...fear not. Give it a couple of months and I will be drowing in it againGrin.

Easyish day at work today. Timetable is being collapsed and it is a day of activities. Secretly quite glad as I miss my trickiest classes so that's a win.

List posting again...going for two days in a row here...bloody record if I achieve it.

To do:-
Washing on
Unload dishwasher
Washing away
Morning routine
Work
Swimming lessons for DD
Dinner
Evening routine
Missions

That will do for now methinks. Have a great day everyone.

Greymalkin · 16/03/2016 07:59

Morning everyone

Ta Da
Cats and DS fed
DS taken to nursery
Dishwasher partially loaded
Washing on

I need to get on with some book keeping, but am procrastinating. Its one of those jobs that I faff horribly with but once I actually get on with it, it's usually very easy. And how apt: its anti-procrastination day....

OP posts:
TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 16/03/2016 09:59

My anti procrastination thing is to get printer sorted! We bought a new one a few weeks ago and just can't get it working. I need to call the customer support line.

I'm enjoying my clutter free bathroom Smile
Can't wait to get rid of more stuff.

I ve put a wash on, I'm showered and dressed (not shoes though!), I need to finish up in the kitchen, scrub the bathtub then go out with dd. I need to go shopping but will drop in at the park.

I'm going to look for somewhere to go in Wales for the Easter weekend. I've probably left it a bit late but I'm hoping I can find some kind of self catering accommodation.
I don't mind where as long as there are nice walks and some good scenery.
Any suggestions would be welcome Smile

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 16/03/2016 10:56

There will be a super long ta da list later due to motivating personal issues that I will not be sharing here. Bewarned and just look away. It will be normal service in a while, but until then behold the scary lists. :(

Greymalkin · 16/03/2016 13:45

Quick list dump:

Ta Da
Did some book keeping
Dealt with cat litter trays
Went for weekly appointment
Found two more geocaches whilst out
Made beds
Laundry now tumbling
Lined up more laundry
Refolded all the towels in the airing cupboard as DH had trashed the lot whilst looking for one thing, then just closed the door on the wreckage thinking the fairies would make it all neat and tidy again.....

Now the blasted docking station is on the blink and I can't get it to connect Grrr. I much prefer working at the desk on a monitor when doing proper work as it is more comfortable and productive. At least I got most of the book keeping done.

Now off to the room of doom with my bin liners and podcasts. If the links are not posted tonight, you'll know that 'the room' has swallowed me up.

OP posts:
YesEinsteinsMumDid · 16/03/2016 17:20

Ta da
Be available on the phone and take many calls
Make a few phone calls
Rearrange doctor's appointment
remove laundry from ds' room
remove washing up from ds' room
Remove washing up and laundry from my room
sort through craft projects
sort through paperwork removing shredding and recycling
find an abandoned load of washing in machine and put it on to re wash
play hunt the important piece of paper - currently losing this game
Sort paperwork into categories ready for filing
put clean clothes away
folding
collect stuff by the back door for going in the incineration later
tidy up glove compartment of car
Ring work and let them know won't be in for a bit
30mins decluttering my floor
figure out what needs to be done in study so an air bed can be put up in there
watch back list of podcasts
write packing lists
sort out crafting projects to take with me
transfer notes on scrappy little bits of paper into a safe findable form
drink waaaay more coffee than is healthy
make some copies of important paperwork
put some clothes on to wash
make orange syrup as never got around to marmalade and couldn't be arsed.
sort out the batch cooking that should have been done yesterday
deal with upset ds
eat orange syrup and ice cream and discover the hard way that a little goes a very very long way and we were a touch heavy handed with the syrup
play hunt the screw driver for getting a job done, won this game of hunt the
tighten screws on bed, chest of drawers, book cases etc
dishwasher run
1 load of laundry

I have got to that part of the day when all i want to do is crawl into bed and sleep. Not been feeling 100% for a few days but the amount of coffee and sugar I have in my system should make me fly for a week. Hopefully whatever is brewing fucks off and doesn't actually appear properly. Otoh Ham egg chips night Grin proper comfort food.

elliepac · 16/03/2016 18:28

Evening all.

Ta da looks like this so far:-

Morning routine
Work

That is it. Small but mighty I like to think .

einstein never apologise for your lists. You may have shit going on and I hope it resolves itself but your lists never fail to make me smile. Syrup should be used in small doses i find .

wooden i bloody love Wales. Personally I would go Pembrokeshire every time. Tis my favourite place in this fair isle of ours. Snowdonia is also lovely as is the Gower Peninsula. Brecon Beacons a bit bleak in places but equallt beautiful in others. I am jealous. I love Wales me.

Swimming lessons beckon now for DD. Possibly some more flying later. We shall see.

knittingwithnettles · 16/03/2016 20:54

hi,

it was ds2's last day at his tuition centre, so in honour of that I did some cleaning and decluttering and sorting.

It still looks like a asteroid has hit a bookshop down here, but there are a few cleared surfaces Grin

ds2 also came home by himself on the bus/train so that saved a bit of time

however today I did NOT

take car to be mended
sort out bank account (have no money in my account again, and need to move it over, but need to go to bank for that as they never answer phone) my catfood purchase was Declined, the shame of it!
buy any provisions (cooked macaroni cheese and peas for supper as a result)
go to ds1's concert - dh had to go instead as I was tired from housecleaning

still waiting for EHCP, but we are now learning German, which is exciting. The LA and school together must be the slowest conversation in the history of bureaucracy, but all seems to be resolved budget wise.

all calm, ds2 irritating sometimes but active and cheery
Twins celebrated their 14 birthday yesterday, I made a springlike cake in pale blue, pale green with pink splodges to represent Magnolia blossom (ha ha) Dd stressed that her baggy jeans purchase fitted all too well, and weren;t baggy, spent a long time crying she was fat compared to her friends (not true, she has lovely figure) Ds2 in very good mood but annoyed that dd complains so much!
Ds1 won the Year 11-12 heat of the School music competition with his singing (not sure if there were many applicants, but still he was thrilled to beat his arch enemy who won last year)

BLOG. well I don;t know, given up long ago being perfectionist. Still have my jam jars collecting waiting to make jam though, don't think that day will come for a while (thinking of Einstein syrup, wow) I was sick over weekend and felt very excited at the thought of possibly losing a pound in weight, how sad it that?

Chocolate Cake Biscuit Chocolate Cake Biscuit

Flightplan for Thursday 17th March

We are in Zone 3: The Bathroom and one other room. The missions for the week say to pick the room in your house which is the worst in terms of clutter.

Today’s missions are to 1) chuck out old cosmetics, perfumes, lotions and potions and 2) spend 15 minutes decluttering your worst room

Our next baby step is to go to bed at a decent hour

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Thursday is errand day, any jobs that involve you leaving the house essentially.

Ds2 and I are hoping to book a trip to Torquay and possibly go on South Devon steam railway to Buckfastleigh. Anyway that is plan, when I manage to get my finances sorted again. None of rest of family wants to come as they say any holiday involving "trains" is utterly dull. Llandudno was considered but we thought the train went from the wrong station and ds2 said he already tried a Virgin train now wanted a First Great Western.

midlifehope · 16/03/2016 21:46

Flat car battery today so had to give dd day off - quite a lot with baby too - but managed:
Reboot dishwasher and washing machine, raked up some garden leaves, 10 mins dusting in my room, scrubbed the bath, did a bit of painting on Ds playhouse fence (intricate rainbow design) and went to Zumba. Bedtime now!

midlifehope · 16/03/2016 21:46

Oh and made leek and potatoe soup for lunch x

Fizrim · 16/03/2016 22:19

Evening all. No housework achieved today apart from a bit of washing up. DH off work as it was DD's class assembly and spent the day shopping or looking at cars. Have sorted out an outfit for DD on Friday though (Sport Relief celebration at school ...).

DD continues to consume calpol although she is better. I have a dental appointment tomorrow which will sap valuable time from my day but well worth doing. Really need to crack on with the tidying though!

needastrongone · 17/03/2016 09:24

I didn't have the most productive day yesterday either, but onwards and upwards eh?

Love the list Einstein, please keep posting them.

ta da
Lunches.
Dishwasher.
Washing x 2.
Online banking.
Dog walk.

to do
Various errands/shopping trips (will take some time).
Weed out a raised bed in the garden at the very least.
Strip a bed.
Make tea.
Walk dogs.
Chickens.
2 drawers (room yet to be specified).

Greymalkin · 17/03/2016 12:47

Hello again all,

Haven't seen you for a while Knitting - hope all is well.

Today feels like a slow day. DS woke me up at 4:15, but managed to play in his room (noisily) until 5. Then we've had a quiet morning at home followed by a trip to playgroup.

Managed a few things:
Cats and DS fed
Washing on and then tumble dried
Dishwasher on and then unloaded
Hand washing up
Made beds
Sorted all junk mail
Planned travel details for trip to London tomorrow

To Do:
Fold and put away dry laundry
Strip and remake DS's bed
Pull out and hoover underneath DS's bed - I had no idea how much dust there was under there - ick!
Either: Sort out boxes of stuff for eBay, or, sweep the garden. DS will get under my feet which ever I do!

How is everyone getting on with the missions? Purple WoodenSpoon Needsa Midlife as newbies, are you finding them and the Flylady system helpful?

Thread leading makes me more productive, so I shall offer to do it more often! Yesterday I managed a triple whammy by sorting out an old filing cabinet over flowing with mostly pointless stuff: 1)decluttered 2)it counts as the mission in my room of doom and 3)anti- procrastination as its a job i have been putting off since we moved into this house five years ago...

OP posts:
knittingwithnettles · 17/03/2016 13:39

right, so today's feats include

walking to garage to find if they would mend the car, and booked it in for later
French Revolution with ds2
watering plants
hanging out washing
putting a wash on
removing a dirty cup from ds1's room
and s & s round the loo!

more excitements to follow,
Touchtyping ds2
drive to dd's concert and back
organise some tea for everyone

dd was in a terrible strop this morning because she had lost everything despite being at home yesterday and having plenty of time to sort it all out Confused Wearing, but I do find it helpful to remember teenagers are just well...trying...and unreasonable as well as lovely and fun to be around

Fizrim · 17/03/2016 13:45

Dental appointment done, did some shopping while out but now realised I could do with some cabbage for colcannon (happy St Pat's Day everyone!) or could cheat and do champ instead We have lime jelly (DD), Guinness (DH) and the Lidl version of Bailey (yay, me!).

DD still feeling a bit rough so will miss her after-school activity tonight which gives me more time at home - also good. Have a few things to sort out for the weekend and tomorrow (Sport Relief day, dress up in school and a disco).

I still feel as if I'm running at maximum capacity some most days but I'm getting there.

Back later!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 17/03/2016 15:05

Ta da

Greymalkin · 17/03/2016 17:01

Safe drive/trip Einstein

Fiz lovely menu there! Am liking the Baileys bit especially Grin

Knitting you must have endless patience! What's your secret?

Had a productive afternoon:
Moved my desk, hoovered all dust from underneath it and on the back of it
Hoovered under DS's bed
Dusted the bed frame
Stripped and remade his bed
Moved all furniture round DS's room, hooving up all the dust (it was really bad Blush )
Chucked out loads of baby stuff that I was holding onto
Rearranged storage system in DS's room
Tidied DS's book box
Packed lots of winter blankets and bedspread into one of those vacuum storage bag things
Bathed DS and washed his hair

Only things left to do:
Dinner
Prep ironing and list of jobs for cleaner for tomorrow
Organise what I need to take to London tomorrow
Links
An early night; I'm knackered!

Evening all. Absolutely zilch flying to report but checking in and keeping true to my promise to myself to stay on the thread. No flying shall be done as am at DP's tonight and we are going to enjoy our only child free night for the next couple of weeks. So date night it is.

Have a great evening peeps!

needastrongone · 17/03/2016 20:13

Have a wonderful time Einstein, enjoy.

Grey Under beds are dust traps aren't they? I desperately need to do ours, but I couldn't possibly move it myself, too heavy. No excuse for the pile of magazines under there though Smile

Thanks, enjoying it so far. I like how relaxed the system (and this thread) is. Little and often suits me, too much overwhelms and puts me off. I can adapt the tasks to other areas of the house to suit, and the system is motivating me to tackle more of the 'clearing' tasks.

Ta da
Dishwasher.
Washing x 3 (including 2 coats)
Vacuum floor downstairs.
Cook tea and clear up.
Go to Next.
Go to Boots.
Wash car.
Air in tyres and fuel.
Tip run.
Farm shop.
Walk the dogs.
Dig over a raised bed, dig in new compost.
Chickens.
Wipe over kitchen.
Book tickets for snowboarding for DD.
Order dollars.
Sat and had a glass of wine with DH.

Panic Flying mode here. I have a group of friends who meet for coffee on a Friday, probably 3 weeks out of every 4. We usually arrange it at the start of the week, no one had made any suggestions this week and I was going to leave it as I have my OU deadline looming. Then I got a text at lunchtime saying they had all agreed to come to my house for coffee at 9 tomorrow! So, a hasty home bleugh was undertaken, I need to run the vac round in the morning. but things are looking quite presentable, phew.
