Flylady's fledglings spring clean your nests! March '16

First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

Chocolate Cake Biscuit Chocolate Cake Biscuit

Flightplan for Monday 14th March

We are in Zone 3: The Bathroom and one other room. The missions for the week say to pick the room in your house which is the worst in terms of clutter.

Today’s mission is to do a 27 fling boogie in the main bathroom Newbies - this link includes a description of what this involves.

Our next baby step is to read the FatFairy’s essay on how to use a calendar

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Monday focus is the beloved [snort] home bleugh Essentially spending 10 minutes each on seven key areas of housework

Blue - amazing bag, well done!

SC - yes to Crufts, we have all been picking favourites all weekend. I really wanted the whippet to win tonight, DH was supporting the Peke (so I won!).

Toffee - sorry to hear about school troubles (and manky salad drawer). We've just hit our first proper problem with my DS's school too, but I don't want to say too much on here, DS is fine though.

Grey - the worst room in our house for clutter at the moment is the landing as the "child storage" and bookcases are still in the process of transitioning their contents (not the DCs I hasten to add!).

Good day today, weekly shopping done, washing done and dried on line, homework more or less done then spent the afternoon at a friend's birthday party, DCs played with other DCs happily for about 4 hours and we hardly saw them, great to catch up with so many friends in one go and lovely weather to boot.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 13/03/2016 22:37

Progress report on the long ass to do list I had left:

clean shower down
door back onto shower - tomo or it will get broken from tiredness
clean toilets which have been soaking
clean bathroom (sink/bath/floor/mirror/shower head) going to have to happen tomo as run out of steam
water and feed plants
2nd load of clothes in washing machine
ironing
half the folding
clothes away going to have to happen tomo
remake bed
2nd load of sofa blankets washed
3rd load of sofa blankets washed
dishwasher emptied
dishwasher reloaded
wash a load of bleachy towels twice through

Giving up and heading to bed. Hope you have all had more fun days than mine! Grin

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 13/03/2016 22:39

How is it I am never in the right zone? Hmm
However I will feel smug that the bathroom will be so shiny bright but the end of tomo that the week's missions there will be redundant and then just depress myself by tackling a different more disastrous zone for the duration of the week.

BlueEyeshadow · 13/03/2016 23:06

Aw shucks, now I feel inclined to disclaim all talent and point out all the mistakes in the bag, easiness of pattern etc! Must learn to take praise better... The design is an Attic24 one if anyone's interested.

Grey I can't actually remember, but think it took about a week, maybe 2, in lots of short bursts.

It's been lovely and sunny here too, though chilly, and have been out making sure DS2 didn't fall off his bike this afternoon. Then had really good roast beef and full works for dinner. Yum.

Big waves to all. Night!

Toffeewhirl · 13/03/2016 23:29

Who - sorry you've hit a problem with your DS's school. Hope you can sort it out.

Glad back is better now, SC. I like the gadget! Grin

Am so happy home ed is going so well for you, fuzz. I still have very happy memories from my own time home educating and have stayed on various home-ed Facebook pages simply because I enjoy seeing what everyone is up to.

Blue - I'm very impressed by that bag. I tried to learn to knit recently, was astonished at how bloody difficult it was and gave up!

Einstein - OMG, that list is huge. Isn't Sunday meant to be a rest day?!

Grey - there are self-cleaning ovens, why hasn't anyone invented the self-cleaning fridge?! It would be a bestseller!

Managed more housework and washing today, as well as cooking a roast dinner. Also took DS2 to his weekly swimming lesson.

DH and DS1 are both feeling really grotty with colds. Am hoping I don't come down with it next.

Computer is about to turn itself off (bedtime), so had better sign off, but it was lovely to 'see' you all again this weekend.

Flowers Flowers Flowers

Slimmingcrackers · 14/03/2016 08:17

Morning! It was hellish out there on the school run today. Forty tractors have come to town (some sort of protest) and roads are blocked off and there are policeman everywhere. This is on top of the current traffic disruption due to all the tunnels being closed. And we missed our usual metro train (yes, you can time their arrival to the minute here!). Yurgh, happy to come home and shut my door on all of the chaos and benzine fumes!

But now need to turn to my own form of domestic C.H.A.O.S.! There is no escaping it sadly! I'm happy we are in the bathroom this week (Thanks Grey) as it is one of the few rooms in the house that (despite crumbling plaster up above) is shiny and scrubbed and relatively well organised. So instead will turn my attention to home office and boudoir.

(See, you are not the only one in the wrong zone Ëinstein!!) And Shock at your Sunday list!! Star Star

Have one full day when I really want to make a difference because it is Cheltenham this week and from Tues onwards my afternoons may be a little, er, busy watching Channel 4

Grey your list makes me feel guilty for not doing more gardening this weekend. Does painting a flower (in water colours) count I wonder?

Hope your dd is improving Fizrim. Would you mind posting a link to that blog please (only if easily do-able, no worries if not.) I still have dreadful "ishews" around prioritisation!

Do you still have to sort permissions individually nowadays when dealing with photos and illustrations Fuzz? Permissions used to be the bane of my life when I worked in publishing.

It was lovely to see you too Toffee Thanks Hope you don't succumb to the lurgies and well done for being such a domestic goddess on your weekend off!

Whoknows Sorry to hear about ds school issue. Hope it can be resolved sucessfully.

Yes that whippet was gorgeous wasn't he? Although of course, out of loyalty, we were cheering on the daschunds!!

Your Sunday party sounded lovely!

Needastrongone like the sound of chicken, dogs, pony on your list!! Smile

Blue yum to roast beef!

Big waves to everyone else! (As even I can'tjustify watching Cheltenham and Mumsnetting, I may be absent for a few days Wink ) Wishing you all a good week ahead though!

celeste83 · 14/03/2016 08:21

Hi all,

I normally post in the other thread but will also start to post here. I like the motivation factor so maybe thwo groups will motivate me even more. I do have days when motivation goes out the window like over the weekend but that was because of the lovely weather Grin

anyway my list today:

  • wash breakfast dishes
  • clean and bleach both loos
  • hoover all rooms
  • tidy ds room
  • general tidy up
  • do food shop
  • make tea
needastrongone · 14/03/2016 08:57

slimming, I wouldn't be leaving the house again today, after that journey, unless I actually had to. Awful.

If I didn't have the dogs, chickens and pony, life would be simpler, cheaper, less messy for sure Smile

Hi celeste

Ta da
Lunches.
Bed stripped, washing on.
Dogs walked.
Shake and Vac on rug in living room

To do
Floors.
Dogs, chickens, pony.
Put away shopping.
Washing swapped.
General tidy.
Bleach down loos.
Cook tea.
Tidy away.
'pick up 27 things'
Empty out the 'smellies box' in the en-suite.
Maybe weed a raised bed if I have time. (working day)
Shower heads need a thorough scrub.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 14/03/2016 09:20

I am in time out atm so just chilling out with the laptop, rewatching the podcast I fell asleep in the middle of last night.

Ta da
ds to school - yep it was quite an achievement this morning
roast in oven to slow roast ready for batch cooking pie later

to do
batch cooking 1
batch cooking 2
batch cooking 3 (assuming ingredients ok)
Dish up batch from last night and place in freezer
spot bleach/bicarb treat the shower
remove sealant
bleach/bicarb edge
dry shower off and air bathroom well

However, yesterday's over exhurtion has caught up and burnout is a little rife (read it hurts and I can't find the strong pain killers so have to be good and actually rest) so I need to rest a fair bit today.

Greymalkin · 14/03/2016 09:20

Good morning all

SC lol re gardening! As my garden consists of a v. large patio and artificial grass, its more like house work outside than real gardening! They both need sweeping and spot cleaning! I have two flower beds and a few containers which require very little effort and attention (maybe thats why they always end up dying on me....)

Einstein - according to the FatFairy it is actually impossible for any of us to be in the wrong zone this week, < hands out 'get out of jail free' cards > so you're off the hook!

Hello to celeste do jump in, any tasks done are progress. Start off with the 27-fling in the bathrooms, I always find stuff to chuck amongst the medicines and toiletry gift sets

My DH is working at home today getting under my feet so I may actually have to go and clean the bathrooms so he can concentrate!

To Do
Take DS to playgroup
Trip to post office
Bathroom mission
Glass recycling
Usual stuff - dishwasher, washing, make beds yada yada yada.....
As DH is at home I'm going to 'assist' him in tackling the chair in our bedroom that he uses for his clothes storage....
Some DIY
Maybe some more gardening

Other thread Celeste?

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 14/03/2016 09:23

See this is why I love the fat fairy Grin not matter how useless I am at flying I am still not failing Grin

celeste83 · 14/03/2016 10:02

Yeah the cleaning thread, or are you not supposed to mention the other group on here? Confused There should just be one group then have all the like minded people on one page instead. As it is though i'm going to be a thread whore and post on each thread Grin

Whats this 26-fling then? My medicine coupboard is quite minimal to be honest anyway, just plasters, cough syrup, paracetemol, flu drink pouches.

ta da
washed breakfast dishes
cleaned and bleached both loos
tidied ds room
general tidy up

to do
hoover all rooms
do food shop
make tea

Its another lovely morning here though so i'm going to make a cuppa and sit outside with my tablets in the sun for a bit before cracking on with the hoovering before lunch.

fuzzpig · 14/03/2016 10:05

Hey Fledglings :)

I'm off on our little holiday. Have a great week Cake :)

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 14/03/2016 10:10

Different threads have different principles. This is a flying thread and we follow the fly lady system. Previously there have also been other flying threads who follow the system more strictly. There used to be the slatterns thread who followed a different system. Kondo is a who different system but there is crossover.

It is not about not talking about other thread it was just that I was curious if there was another flying thread. And NO there should NOT just be one thread. Different threads have different systems, ethos and approaches. Not everyone fits every system, and that has been very evident over the long running of this thread. There have been falling outs. Everyone is welcome, we just appreciate those who respect the system and don't tell us we are wrong because we aren't perfect or not doing things a certain way. Also you are on the wrong thread if you just want cleaning talk. The thread is about far more than just cleaning.Sometimes no cleaning/tidying even happens. For days ShockGrin not even joking! Grin

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 14/03/2016 11:33

Going to have to drag my sorry butt out of time out.

No soda crystals so can't put washing machine cleaning wash on
No fabric softner so can't put laundry on
No potatoes so can't finish off stew for freezing (needed more potatoes)
Slow cooked meat too hot to turn into pie

Otoh remember that frustrating phone call day. One of the awaited callbacks has happened and it was incredibly useful.

Whoknows hope you get things sorted with your ds' school. Sorry you are having such a frustrating and worrying time.

SC

Oi Ellie where's my swear buddy? Come back, they are too nice and don't swear enough Shock

Grey men have a habit of getting under the feet when home when not normally. Also, I have just sent 5 plants to the great compost heap in the sky. Killed them. All I had to do was remember to water them Blush

Fuzzpig enjoy your holiday

Need i have chicken Envy

Toffee hope you have managed to escape the cold

Blue i keep looking at Attic 24 designs but i have more than enough projects on the go and need to finish decluttering them first

Fizrim course sounds interesting. hope dd is feeling better

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/03/2016 11:36

Just wondering if I can join. I'm mostly up together with things but an 8mo is making it tricky and I need a little and often approach to chip away and keep on track.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/03/2016 11:40

Oh and no electric today so limited. On the plus side I have filled a skip of garage junk over the last week, I'd definitely recommend hiring one for larger clear outs, they're much easier than (never getting around to) taking to the tip :)

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 14/03/2016 11:41

Knock yourself out Purple
Grey is posting links to the essential stuff, we recommend you don't sign up for emails but some people like them, most of us find them too much and more of a hinderance than a help. Adapt to fit your life and routine. 8mo can make a lot of things, house work is the last thing to feel guilty about. Little people are little for such a short time enjoy it. The house work will still be there when they are big and too busy with their own lives for bothering with their folks

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/03/2016 11:44

Oh yes, I followed for a bit on FB or Twitter and it got too much. Indeed, they're only little for a bit, so trying to sit back and enjoy.

Daily targets are:
Dishwasher emptying & filling
One load of washing
Fly lady zone attempt

Slimmingcrackers · 14/03/2016 14:14

Just have ten mins before fetching dd so pausing with a cup of Brew and offers teapot around ... .

A warm welcome to Celeste and Purplecrazyhorse

Purplecrazyhorse that sounds like a v. good realistic list when you have an 8 month old in tow (it's a lovely age though isn't it? Smile) Well done on filling that skip!

Celeste here is the explanation about Fling Boogies, just one of a few decluttering tools in the Flylady system. (I think the singing bit is optional Grin) More general decluttering info here. I find FLing Boogies are good to do with family, if you put on loud music etc and make it fun. Also quite a good tool when one is dithering like me and over-thinking the decluttering process as it breaks the dead-lock and gets things going ifyswim. Lovely sunny morning here too btw! (Makes the decluttering a lot easier I find!)

Einstein oooh [excited] which wrong zone shall we break out in to next? Grin

Glad last week's phone hanging exercise produced some good results in the end... .

and, um, [said quietly] "arse"!

[that's my attempt at swearing for you] Grin

Have a great holiday Fuzz!

Waves to everyone else!

Ta da:
animals
morning routine inc dw emptied, td on, wms on, s&s
school run
polished sink, polished stove, cleaned kitchen surfaces
general tidy up, quick hoover and home bleugh etc ground floor
ordinary rubbish
recycling
telephoned sister
cleaned furry one's ears
welcomed and paid dog-walker (back better but I've kept them on for now as dh travelling so much)
rubbish and recycling
fed wms again and hung up washing to dry
20 mins sorting laundry
20 mins sorting pantry
played hunt the missing recipes for 10 mins

OK so none of the above involved the boudoir or home office as intended. Think I am avoiding them Blush

However I did take inspiration from our esteemed thread leader Greyand divided laundry mountain in to more manageable hillocks Smile. Finally getting back on top of the post-bad-back laundry back-log.

Right, lawd, now late for school run ...byyyyeee!!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 14/03/2016 14:30

Looks like you were in the kitchen zone SC. Personally I am still at a trash the kitchen stage in proceedings. Just got my marmalade recipe. Almost tempted to get it in the pot. But not really feeling the love. You, however, seem to be taking the productively procrastinating approach. Star

ta da
Washing machine on a cleaning cycle with soda crystals
computer based adminy stuff
podcast watching
potatoes on ready for finishing stew
pastry defrosting ready for pies
New stock cube brand found as old one "improved" the recipe and it is no longer suitable for the house of allergies Hmm
Speak to sister (after laughing at her confusion over call guardian)
consider the cunning plan, decide cba, go into hiding in time out again.

midlifehope · 14/03/2016 15:10

So today I have done the home blessing (well hoovering anyway), rebooted dishwasher, prepped dinner, wiped kitchen surfaces and done a load of laundry. Even helped out with an he of gardening at my DCs sch (virtuous)... Please read me what else I gave to do today! Not bad with a 6 month old in tow!!!
