Things that annoy you about other people's housekeeping

Recently stayed with a friend, in the week we were there the hand towel in kitchen wasn't washed, there's no hand towel in the bathroom (just their body towels???) They ran out of handwash for about 4 days in the bathroom do had to keep washing my hands downstairs and ran out of loo roll!!!

Now obviously these things never happen in my home and I am vigilant about it (wash hand towel everyday, hand towels, soap and loo roll always available). But I wondered if I do anything that could potentially annoy guests? What bugs you when you stay with others?

My parents use a fresh j-cloth twice a week to do dishes. They have a dishwasher so it's rarely used, but not changing it daily bugs me. That said, my house is no palace and theirs is like a showhome.

claraschu · 18/02/2016 11:48

Overly clean house, where I feel like I am sure to do something wrong, dry my hands on the wrong towel, leave a cup on the wrong surface.

DerelictDaughter · 18/02/2016 11:53

I get really narked if I'm asked sweetly to take off my shoes. (Disclaimer: if I can see it's a super clean house, I will offer.) There's something about the request that means it can never sound right. You invite a guest in and then violate the norms of hospitality by asking them to do something for you. Because they are dirty! Double whammy.

However I perfectly understand that shoes are dirty. Even if you don't step in shit, the bit of pavement you walked along will have had shit on it at some point and realistically those shit germs are on your shoes because the rain doesn't bleach everything away.

But the truth is they will be absolutely everywhere at all times and we are built to deal with it (unless immunologically compromised) so I guess the two points of view cancel themselves out?

ChopsticksandChilliCrab · 18/02/2016 11:54

Other people (MIL I'm looking at you) who put their handbags on tables or kitchen surfaces when you know that the bags have been on car floors, loo floors and cafe floors. Grim.

You wouldn't put your shoes on the kitchen worktop so why put your filthy handbag there?

Wondermoomin · 18/02/2016 12:00

Not changing bed sheets between different sets of guests and putting a once-used bath towel back in the airing cupboard with all the clean ones "because it's not dirty" Shock

No soap

Properly dirty bathrooms/kitchens

Poor food hygiene

Suspect-smelling dishcloths

Not offering a drink or being stingy with offers when you've invited someone round

Too cold house

A stuffy home that's never aired

No lock on bathroom doors

Hamster droppings on the floor

SmaDizietSma · 18/02/2016 12:11

Logs in the toilet and a weak toilet flush.

Air freshener and tidying up things in use.

I'm guilty of no bin in the bathroom and won't ever be getting one.

SmaDizietSma · 18/02/2016 12:13

I'm adding not changing the bed linen and smelly, moist towels.

Sex toys under the bed.

cozietoesie · 18/02/2016 12:31

Sex toys under the bed?? Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 18/02/2016 12:38

Re shoes off, I do always offer, but I am not impressed if the host says yes if they have freezing floors, especially if they can see I have no socks on. No objections to taking them off for carpet, just cold hard floors. I don't want to wear guest slippers either.

snowymountaintops · 18/02/2016 12:44

ely1 I always wear Marigolds on the odd occasion that I use bleach. Agree with the poster who said that it's far more harmful for you than the odd germ which will strengthen your immune system whereas bleach is just a horrible chemical.

SmaDizietSma · 18/02/2016 12:51

Sex toys under the bed for real. Bed hadn't been changed in a while, hosts gave their bed up, hearts were very much in the right place. I 'slept' on my coat.

cozietoesie · 18/02/2016 12:51

There are some interesting questions to be posed about the relationship between having at least some bacteria around and having a decent immune system (And with the increased use of antibiotics over recent years which will likely be coming to an end shortly.)

I'm not slovenly about dirt but the odd patch of bacteria doesn't keep me awake at nights either. I hardly ever use bleach.

cozietoesie · 18/02/2016 12:54

....hosts gave their bed up....

Pity. I was just imagining doing my best Great Aunt Wilhelmina act at breakfast the next morning and questioning what these things were that I'd found. Wink

mouldycheesefan · 18/02/2016 13:00

Pets.
Yes your house does smell of pet and there are pet hairs around.
Gross.
Your dog walks in shit and then walks it into your house.

Hippahippahey · 18/02/2016 13:37

Mouldy my dog certainly doesn't walk in shit, it happened to him once and he was disgusted Grin

HoggleHoggle · 18/02/2016 13:54

Scented sticks everywhere sitting in strong smelling perfume. Each to their own but they give me a massive headache so I inwardly cringe when I go to someone's house and they're there.

gandalf456 · 18/02/2016 15:56

I never put my handbag on shop floors or loo floors. I hang them up

ElderlyKoreanLady · 18/02/2016 18:10

Are people really putting their handbags on the floor in the loos?! Confused

iPaid · 18/02/2016 18:35

Where do you put them if there's no hook on the door?

Hippahippahey · 18/02/2016 18:52

I hold it over my arm if there's no hook. I love my bags no way am I putting them on a dirty floor!

Goadyflattery · 18/02/2016 18:57

Hippa they have an amazing ability to avoid it don't they? Very clever.

ElderlyKoreanLady · 18/02/2016 19:00

If there's no hook I keep it on my arm. Nobody peed on my arm.

Hippahippahey · 18/02/2016 19:02

They do goady, even running full pelt through a field. Wish my pram wheels had the same ability!

Lilipot15 · 18/02/2016 19:05

My in-laws kitchen bin is like a mountain about to have an avalanche. My daughter has food allergies so I have reason to feel anxious about it. When I've asked where the bin liners are and said I'll change it I'm not popular - it is most definitely FIL's job (amongst many things, poor man).

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 18/02/2016 19:09

I sonetimes put my bag on floors in cafes, cinemas, theatre and at home, but never, ever toilet floors and never, on kitchen counters or tables
