Things that annoy you about other people's housekeeping

Recently stayed with a friend, in the week we were there the hand towel in kitchen wasn't washed, there's no hand towel in the bathroom (just their body towels???) They ran out of handwash for about 4 days in the bathroom do had to keep washing my hands downstairs and ran out of loo roll!!!

Now obviously these things never happen in my home and I am vigilant about it (wash hand towel everyday, hand towels, soap and loo roll always available). But I wondered if I do anything that could potentially annoy guests? What bugs you when you stay with others?

Oh and febreeze and air fresheners make me heave. Nasty things, open a window instead.

Eggsandketchup · 17/02/2016 21:42

Dishcloths/sponges make me nervous. I change mine every day. Sometimes more often than that. I'm a bit paranoid of spreading food poisoning germs. Some people use the same dishcloth for weeks!

capsium · 17/02/2016 21:48

3luckystars just for you, here is a Royle family clip where Barbara rubs her bacony (my iPad hates that word!) on her t-shirt whilst dancing.

Cats on the counter.
Handwashed dishes/cutlery.
People who use the same cloth/sponge to wash dishes and surfaces.
People who leave a used cloth behind the toilet/sink pedestal. A cloth that goes hard and dry, that they're planning to use again
Basins in sinks, grey sludgy cloths hanging around the sink crawling with bacteria, viruses and fungi.

SecretWitch · 17/02/2016 21:59

I can stand just about anything except a dirty bathroom or kitchen. Would it hurt to make sure there are no skid marks in your toilet before guests come round? Also, wipe down your counter once and a bit, peeling my hand back with a jelly like substance stuck to it makes me feel queasy.

ScarletForYa · 17/02/2016 22:04

Pets indoors as well. Dogs with their hair and naked bumholessitting on carpets, or worse on furniture, or even in HUMAN BEDS!!!

Shoes in the house rule, oh dear, I'm probably the least favourite person to visit, as we have a STRICT shoes off rule. NO exceptions - do have guest slippers.

Whilst yes they're not likely to be caked in muck, just the thought knowing peoples shoes have been on piblic toilet floors, supermarket floors, pub floors etc (basically places that may look clean, but you know they aren't).

Disgusting.

A person has free prerogative to run their house how they please, but a personal pet peeve is low temperature clothes washing (never doing a hot wash) wouldn't really want to use their bathroom hand towel or have a drink etc as they may have used the dishcloth/pot towel on their flatware after it had been "cleaned" on a cool wash

Yes I'm strange Blush

Oh also, I do dry hands on tea towels, but would never use that same towel to dry dishes (not that I do that anyway as have a dishwasher).

I'm that psycho that always has hands in bleach anyway, so no germs on hands when they are dried anyway.

We have hundreds (not kidding) of cloths and dish towels, so I do change them at least 3 times a day, and they all go in on a 95 degree wash on their own.

PerspicaciaTick · 18/02/2016 01:11

In RL, I have never had any issues or concerns with anyone else's housekeeping.

However some of the people on MN who waste vast quantities of water and power by excessively washing towels and bedding really make me cross because when you add them all together, it makes my efforts to save resources seem pointless and insignificant.

iPaid · 18/02/2016 09:14

Hear hear, Perspi!

ElderlyKoreanLady · 18/02/2016 09:30

e1y1 you change your tea towel 3 times a day and wash your hands in bleach? Confused

ElderlyKoreanLady · 18/02/2016 09:31

And do washes just for tea towels? Confused

MackerelOfFact · 18/02/2016 09:31

The only thing that really bothers me is toothpaste grime and hairs in the bathroom. It takes 30 seconds to go round the sink and toilet with a Flash wipe, surely you'd make an effort to do that at the very least if you knew guests would be using it. I'm always amazed at how many otherwise prinstine and presentable homes have grotty bathrooms!

Hippahippahey · 18/02/2016 10:22

Hate having to take my shoes off feels unwelcoming. I get the issue with germs on shoes but I just have a quick mop of the floor when people leave.

Dirty sink in the bathroom, bars of soap instead of hand wash.

Houses without pets.

Hippahippahey · 18/02/2016 10:23

Oh forgot to say I use tea towels to dry my hands and get things out of the oven. Dishes air dry.

Miss you loads use different clothes for the worktop and dishes. I chuck these out every few days and just have a new pack delivered with my shopping every week. I did this when I realised that it was cheaper to replace than do a hot wash.

expatinscotland · 18/02/2016 10:29

Jesus wept! Why didn't you buy some handwash and stick it in there? I'd not be asking back any 'friend' who stayed at mine and then started a bitching thread about my home on the internet.

snowymountaintops · 18/02/2016 10:41

Guest slippers? Yuk. I trust adults not to walk mud or dog poo into my carpet, I don't ever eat off it so what does it matter if your shoes have been out on the gravel or pavement? How often have you had food poisoning from someone having walked on a pub floor and then come into your house for a cup of tea? Never I would suspect.

You change your tea towel 3 times a day ely1 ?? That's utterly absurd, what a waste of time and planetary resources.

snowymountaintops · 18/02/2016 10:42

Just read that you wash them all at 95 degrees on their own, how is that remotely necessary? and as for washing your hands in bleach.....

e1y1 · 18/02/2016 11:18

Afraid so elderly Blush

e1y1 · 18/02/2016 11:26

Takes 30 seconds snowy and they go on one wash on their own once a fortnight.

Guest slippers get washed too, theyre not slippers that you would normally wear all day, they're like the ones you'd have at hotels.

It may soubd barmy they way I do it, (it does reading it back) but sorry, I aint changing.

I'd find people who have to replace things more often (carpets, teatowels, washing machines etc) becasuse they couldn't be bothered to look after them properly a bigger drain on the planets resources.

e1y1 · 18/02/2016 11:27

Don't actually wash my hands on bleach, i clean with bleach, so my hands are always in it.

Hippahippahey · 18/02/2016 11:34

I would be more concerned with bleach transferring onto food than germs tbh. I only use bleach down the plug holes if they need it which is rarely.

P1nkP0ppy · 18/02/2016 11:38

Shoes off (farming for years so non negotiable)
Handbags on tables or work surfaces (they've been on shop floors, loo floors and so on 😖)
Grubby sinks and basins
Limescale in loos (utterly grim)
Dish cloths - germ-laden (more bugs than a toilet seat and you're using them?)
Grimey towels.....even worse if soggy

Crikeyblimey · 18/02/2016 11:41

I wash some pots by hand and then dry them with a tea towel and then (shock horror) dry my hands - the same ones that have been in the water with the plate and that I used to hold the tea towel whilst I dried it - with the same tea towel!!

For goodness sake - when I've washed my hands they are clean! It matters not one jot which towel I use to dry them.

BornToFolk · 18/02/2016 11:41

I dry my hands on tea towels. It annoyed my mum so much that she bought me a hand towel for the kitchen which I hung up to please her and then carried on using the tea towels, which also get used to dry dishes but are changed fairly frequently.

I also hate manky/damp hand towels in bathrooms. I always put out a fresh handtowel if I've got guests coming.
