Things that annoy you about other people's housekeeping

Recently stayed with a friend, in the week we were there the hand towel in kitchen wasn't washed, there's no hand towel in the bathroom (just their body towels???) They ran out of handwash for about 4 days in the bathroom do had to keep washing my hands downstairs and ran out of loo roll!!!

Now obviously these things never happen in my home and I am vigilant about it (wash hand towel everyday, hand towels, soap and loo roll always available). But I wondered if I do anything that could potentially annoy guests? What bugs you when you stay with others?

Discovering that people can't exist without a TV or radio on in every room. Makes my brain bleed.

pennyrino · 23/02/2016 18:53

I absolutely won't set foot in a friend's house unless they have first submitted a satisfactory cleaning management programme detailing frequency of towel washing, bacterial reduction rating of hand soap and full worming and defleaing history of all pets and children.
And of course I carry my own disposable overshoes in my handbag which I never set down on any surface. Grin

ShouldHaveStayedHome · 23/02/2016 19:12

We only use tea towel for drying hands. Starting to make me wonder why we have tea towels...
Also have cats and antibacterial surface cleaner. So I don't see an issue there.
Tbh the judging going on in this thread is the exact reason only family ever come to my house. I'm paranoid that we're not up to our friends standards. Sad really.

Spandexpants007 · 23/02/2016 19:47

I absolutely won't step foot in anyone's house if they don't have cake

squeak10 · 23/02/2016 20:07

Blimey, staying with my friends is 5 star compared to you lot

Jw35 · 23/02/2016 20:44

JW35-it annoyed you about having itv on in the morning! Really?

Sorry I thought this was a lighthearted thread! Blush no of course it didn't 'annoy' me! Just not my taste!

Didn't know people thought bath mats unhygienic! What do they use then? I hate wet feet on a floor!
I do find antibacterial wipes weird instead of dishcloths, dishcloths pick up crumbs easier!

foxessocks · 23/02/2016 20:53

When there is no hand soap available in a bathroom.

When you're not sure where to dry your hands in the kitchen. I don't mind using a tea towel if it's a tea towel for drying hands and there's another one for dishes (as is the case in my house!)

Air freshener things that squirt out suddenly and unexpectedly right next to your head and make you jump and then sneeze like crazy.

Throws for pets on sofas that you then have to sit on that have hair and slobber on.

I think I'm guilty of not changing hand towels enough - oops! But I do always have soap and loo rolls in plentiful supply.

"Ever considered that different people like their houses at different temperatures? What's cold for one person is perfectly fine for another."

Yes, but I know a couple of people who do it because they're tight with money. They really would not disappear in a pool of sweat if the heating was turned on for a bit, they're just mean.

SweetAngels · 23/02/2016 22:17

I also don't change hand towels often enough 😳😳
Hate it when there's hair left in a bathroom eg in sink/ bath or floor
Also mil drives me mad by using kitchen mop/ brush to clean the bathroom- I have separate ones as I always think if DCs drop something on kitchen floor then 3sec rule applies but obviously not in bathroom so if kitchen floor is cleaned with mop /broom that also cleaned bathroom then bleurgh IMO
MIL also uses kitchen counter cloths to wipe down her leather sofas - I always say that I survive by the grace of God after eating at hers 😂😂😂

SweetAngels · 23/02/2016 22:20

And yes yes to people that are tight with heating- my dad is one of them! Spent Christmas at his and the thermostat was on 10 f@*%in degrees - major argument between us always because of this!!!
Meanwhile he goes round acting like he's sweating bcz of the heat in the house -- erm take off that thermal outdoor fleece dad 😈😈😈😂😂😂

cozietoesie · 24/02/2016 09:50

Out of interest, what is the 3sec rule?

SweetAngels · 24/02/2016 10:11

cozie:

It's when you drop food on the floor and if you pick it up within 3seconds it's safe to eat, lol - am sure it's an old wives tale but have had this drummed into my head since I was a child so no changing me now😂😂

cozietoesie · 24/02/2016 10:30

Ah.

I guess it depends what it lands on? Wink

Katarzyna79 · 24/02/2016 10:53

thurlow bathmats, carpets rugs in bsthroom make me cringe. I first saw a bathmat on moving in with husband and his mum. She has very poor hygiene i wont make you sick with details. But i got fed up wakinh up need to do ablutions some place clean and saud mat filthy everyday, i threw it out easier to do quick mop than ckean shite every morn before breakfast.

Katarzyna79 · 24/02/2016 10:57

susie my parents made us do that but no mention of timing just told pick up asap long as kitchen floor not filthy to eat it, was told its wasteful i dont think the hygiene bothered them so much lol

BinaryFinary · 24/02/2016 11:10

Who are these people you are visiting or having visit you? Your friends and families surely? And you're grossed out that they might've y'know touched something you then touch? That you can't say 'bloody hell Belinda this cake is full of cat hair?' Or 'where do you keep your towers love this one is covered in massive poo streaks and I want to dry my hands' Jeeze

cozietoesie · 24/02/2016 11:21

You have a point, Binary. Smile

mrskim123 · 24/02/2016 15:13

My MIL (batty and bolshie) hand washes her knickers in tepid water and hangs them on the radiator to dry next to her filthy floor cloth which she has used but not rinsed out. I can see them behind her chair when I visit and it makes me cringe. Her other DIL sometimes asks her about hygiene and she is thought to be 'obsessed' with it ('always washing - there must be something wrong with her'). It's embarrassing but I smile politely. What else can you do without causing offence?

whynogutfeeling · 24/02/2016 17:39

katza my ILs have carpet in the bathroom with additional yuck in the form of one of those pedestal rugs round the loo base....

When my MIL comes to visit us, she always brings two flannels and tends to strip wash rather than shower. I therefore assume one flannel is for face and the other for 'bits'. She leaves both folded up on the side of the bath..... She only wee stays a couple of nights but urghhhh - this habit is annoying! Ditto the talc she leaves all over the bathroom floor!

specialsubject · 24/02/2016 18:23

Not sure if this place would pass the MN jury....there are mats on the floor in the bathroom because it is laminate, and shouldn't get wet. And is lethally slippery if it does...

each sink has a towel and handwash. Any guests get their own hand towel and bath/shower towel, and shown the airing cupboard so the towel will be warm and dry if they are staying more than one night.

shoes? Take them off if muddy - which as most of our guests are walkers/outdoor types, they are. Basic courtesy. If shoes not muddy, keep them on if you want.

that's why I take my shoes off when visiting someone. I wear trainers and they pick up muck.

billybear · 24/02/2016 19:11

years ago was seeing a lovely man was going really well I spent the night went to loo nearly was sick it had not been cleaned in years a filthy rim all round it dead flies floating in it , rest of house was clean but I never saw him after seeing his loo my god was like how clean is your house show the worst loo in history .

Gwenhwyfar · 24/02/2016 19:56

"She leaves both [flannels] folded up on the side of the bath"

Where do you want her to leave them?

whynogutfeeling · 24/02/2016 22:33

Gwen in her toilet bag? Or better still, dispense with a minge flannel as just take a shower ...?!

whynogutfeeling · 24/02/2016 22:35

gwen I'd rather she kept the minge flannel in her toilet bag.., or better still, dispense with it and just take a shower?

Gwenhwyfar · 24/02/2016 23:59

If she put it in her toilet bag it would be damp wouldn't it? If she had a shower, wouldn't she still use the flannels to wash with in the shower?b
