no! they are very heavy and mine seems to get blocked fairly often. I would not get another one

sunnywong · 29/12/2006 13:30

well they are worth one's dh not giving them away to the neighbours for free instead of packing it with the rest of our belongings and shipping it out to Oz where they cost 800 bucks

PinkTinsel · 29/12/2006 13:34

i love mine, have only had it since sept though and the pice of crap we had before it was so bad it might just seem brilliant in comparison but i have no complaints.

it's soooo easy to empty, no faffing round with bags and it's got really good suction. the only thing to be wary of is that, although it says it's perfect for stairs, it will try and randomly leap downstairs while hoovering and if you happen to be below it could potentially give you quite a slap. that said i never hoover with the hoover above me anyway so it doesn't bother me

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 29/12/2006 13:34

no, no and thrice no.

Had a couple - they weight a ton and both have conked out after a year or so. I would never buy one again and am now very happy with my miele which is fabuloso.

Macdog · 29/12/2006 13:35

I asked for a Dyson on my wedding list nearly 2 years ago. this one
I LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So easy to dismantle for cleaning/maintenance. Hose really good as well because all 'bits' integral.
Cleans really well IMHO.
Only down side is that it's very noisy, but I can live with that

smittenkitten · 29/12/2006 13:39

do you have to clean the filter on a dyson?

also i'm loking at the cylinder not the upright - are those as heavy?

OP posts:
PinkTinsel · 29/12/2006 13:40

i've got a pull along one and it's far lighter than my last hoover

noddyholder · 29/12/2006 13:40

while they work they are brilliant as the suction is always powerful and never weakens but they do break quite easily and i would def recommend a miele

Ready · 29/12/2006 13:43

Definitely recommend the dyson. We got ours 5 years ago and I would never get anything else!! We have the upright one, which is heavy on the stairs. I never use it as an upright though, always use the attachments and on hands and knees.

Bucketsofdynomite · 29/12/2006 18:11

I've got an upright Dyson, it was an improvement on pre-Dyson vacuums but it's heavy and far too much hard work turning the handle inside out iyswim to hoover the edges, it's like doing a room twice. Trying to convince DH we need a Miele.

CorrieDale · 29/12/2006 18:15

Ours is nearly 8 years old and is still going strong. We've replaced various parts but you can get them on Ebay for buttons. Bloody heavy though. When it finally packs in, will be doing some research on Mieles and the newer Dysons. DS loves his toy one, though!!!

twinsetandpearls · 29/12/2006 18:16

I ahve just bought a dyson animal and love it, got awful which reviews so didn;t buy one and regretted it as we have had a series of crap hoovers. Dyson animal puts them to shame

twinsetandpearls · 29/12/2006 18:17

My mum has an original dyson ,one of the black and yellow ones thatis still going strong and she has had hers for years

Guttersnipe · 29/12/2006 18:18

OMG see my thread here! Yes they are fantastic IMO although I did not buy mine. It was a present.

eggnog · 29/12/2006 18:19

so has my mum and it is brill. i bought a pull along one two years ago and am v pleased with it.

justbeme · 29/12/2006 18:19

i met a lady in Comet today who was trying to buy a new hoover - she said you could shove Dysons where the sun don't shine , as she'd had 2 and they'd both conked out on her!
I suppose with everything , it depends who you listen to - everyones got their opinions . Mind you , I think weight is important as you don't want to be lugging something heavy up and down stairs.

Guttersnipe · 29/12/2006 18:22

Mine is a pull along and the main part is quite heavy but this is compensated by the hose part being much lighter than my previous vacuum cleaner. When I say heavy, it is all relative. Most of the time it is pulling along the ground and it is very light to pull. The only time I would carry mine would be to lift it upstairs so I am not anticipating finding the weight a problem.

emmatomATO · 29/12/2006 18:24

Yes, if only for the after sales service. They are brill anyway and if something does happen ( I managed to make a small tear in the hose on something sharp), you have a hotline to them and they come and give the whole machine a overhaul and replace your part for a measly £30.

So basically you could have your dyson for like, as long as you know about the hotline.

Message to self - don't contribute again to threads on vacuum cleaners, makes me feel extremely dull.

Jimjams2 · 29/12/2006 18:25

my dyson's just blown up on me- it;s about 4 years old- although heavily used. It did have a lot of problems but dyson servicing was by far the best I've ever dealt with. Ring the number on the hoover and they send someone out.

Am off hoover shopping tomorrow. As yet undecided.

Radley · 29/12/2006 18:26

I'm on my 2nd dyson hoover, the first one gave up after been used 2 times a day for 10 years, the second one is just as fab.

I also have a dyson washing machine which is the dogs bollox. I would never have another brand vac or washing machine to be honest.

Also, their customer service is fabulous.

ludaloo · 29/12/2006 18:26

IME definately

I have one - it was a massive waste of cash in my opinion. A £60 hoover is fine, why pay more? Bits snap off easily, and although there is no bag you have to wash the drum YUK!!!! and the filters are expensive.

Save yourself £200 and buy something you will enjoy for goodness sake. Dysons are just snobbery/gadget obsession, not a grown up choice!

twinsetandpearls · 29/12/2006 18:45

radley, have they not discontinued their washers now, ours is about to die and we need a new washer so was doing some reasearch online earlier.

twinsetandpearls · 29/12/2006 18:48

WE bought a cheaper hoover mousiemousie thinking the same aas you, one thateven had a greatrating from which magazine I think it was a morphy richards and it was a nightmare we might as tried rubbing fluff off our carpets with ripped up fivers. I will never buy a cheap hoover again.
