Well, after much prevarication, I started on the garage yesterday.
I estimated a few pages back that it was a minimum of 4 hours work.... Six hours yesterday, and most of today and I'm still not finished.
However the end is in sight.
I've culled a lot of random crap, and sorted out all the garden stuff.
Went through the leftover paint kept for touch ups, which is so old it will not be usable. Plus we have replaced all the carpets so next repaint job will have to be a different shade of beige.

Have collated all the golf stuff into little piles of similar stuff so tomorrow Mr Wunderland and I will play the Keep or Chuck game. I'm sure we don't need a dozen golf towels.
Good news is that we won't need to buy any new golf balls until 2019

OliveBranchCollins · 31/05/2016 19:19

Hi
Ive done my clothes today 8 bags 8! I thought I was good at keeping on top of things but obviously not.
Kids clothes tomorrow DD very impressed by my neatly rolled tights so we did her underwear drawer tonight.
The boys are less impressed Ds2 reckons I shouldn't bother with their clothes "cos it's easier just to chuck it all in a heap when you make us put our washing away"
Hmm

MrsNutella · 01/06/2016 12:54

We have made some headway. I've given a few books and toys that we don't use to DD's nursery. Which has made enough room to reorganise the toys and slightly reduce the space they take up.

The office contents has probably been almost halved. Loads of documents shredded and other stuff binned or sold.

Actually we have had a good week selling stuff on second hand. I need to try and keep up the momentum. But I've kept a track of pretty much everything we have sold second hand and we have raised almost 900€ Shock

MrsNutella · 01/06/2016 12:55

And we donated a load of stuff to a local charity. They picked it up today. About 6 boxes, 5 bin bags, chair, foot stool, small chest of drawers. Alllll gone. Yay!

OliveBranchCollins · 02/06/2016 14:28

So kids clothes all done, 1.5 bags for DD. 2 for DS1 and 1for DS2. The boys have very different tastes DS1 lives in mountain warehouse type clothes, DS2 is a bit of a fashonista so no hand-me-downs.

I'm 99% sure DD's wardrobe/drawers will stay kondo'd and 80% sure the boys stuff will end up chucked every which way.
Hmm

stiffstink · 02/06/2016 15:25

I've kondoed DS's clothes up to age 3 but noticed that a few of his outfits appear to be missing so I expect that the loft contains even more than I thought.

I got a letter from Cancer Research saying my donations have made £10 or so, even though I can't remember donating to their shop. If I did, I would have had to walk to that shop with the donation bag under the pram as is isn't somewhere with parking nearby, so £10 for a small bag is great. I mainly donate to BHF, a children's hospice shop and 2 adult hospice shops with parking outside and DH takes bags to Age UK near his office. I'd say we've donated the equivalent of 60 bin bags overall to those 5 charities so I can't wait to see how much has been raised in all.

StrangeOddment · 03/06/2016 09:19

Our dining room table has gone! And I got a twenty for it! (The nice lady said "how much do you want?" And I said,
"Honestly I'm just happy someone's using it...twenty?"
So everyone was happy.
There are three small boxes of stuff outside the house for people to rifle through. Couple of things have gone already (it's only been an hour). The nice thing is that sometimes people will take the whole thing, box and all. I don't care where it goes as long as it's gone though!

Local refugee place coming around soon to see what furniture can be donated. It's mostly cheap IKEA stuff that we intended not to keep, but it's in pretty good condition, so if someone with nothing can make use of it, and I don't have to worry about what to do with it, it's perfect.

That said I'm looking forward to moving into a house where I can buy permanent and joy-sparking furniture instead of thinking, "this will all have to be sold or donated in 18 months..."

Impressive charity bag total, stiffsink!

stiffstink · 03/06/2016 10:10

We also filled a skip! And there were numerous trips to the tip. Loads of stuff freecycled. Oh and 2 car boot sales (with 2 car loads each time). At the second car boot sale I had a box for stuff that I just wanted rid of with a big sign saying FREE and that was really successful!

I have done current clothes (ie DS's old clothes are a work in progress), paperwork, all kitchen categories, shoes, books (I have only 4 left), DVDs, CDs. Phew!

However I am thinking of starting again as I am nowhere near my click point. DD is 16 weeks old and is a little dream but creates an unbelievable amount of laundry. Clothes are never put away and we all seem to use the floordrobe. DS has about 20 tshirts and 15 pairs of shorts which is totally unnecessary, especially as the ones in his wardrobe never get into circulation (see above re floordrobe)! And don't get me started on his toys.

This is AFTER I have been kondoing for 18 months! I need to pull my socks up!

stiffstink · 03/06/2016 12:32

Just had another gift aid letter, another £15 raised for the children's charity which the letter tells me would buy 3 hot meals for neglected children. £25 in total so far for charities.

Still 2 hospice charities and BHF to hear from.

OliveBranchCollins · 03/06/2016 20:35

I'm slowly plodding my way through the paperwork here. I'm self employed and treasure for several local committees so there is half a forest in various piles all over the dining room floor.
I'm avoiding books for the moment as. I get very sentimental over them

MrsNutella · 03/06/2016 21:29

I've found some places easier to get on and kondo than others. The office wasn't a problem. Kids rooms I'm not really going to do much to because they don't have much in: just clothes in their current size a small amount of toys and a few books. The books are rotated with the rest of the books downstairs to vary bedtimes and stop DH and I from going mad

Then our bedroom is I guess half done. The bathroom has been pruned. Then it's downstairs that is going to be a huge task I think. And the kitchen and finally the garage.... Hmmmmm

How much time do people generally need to do a room? How do you know when it is done? The last thing on my (mental) list is baby clothes. I know that will be one of the last things to do.

StrangeOddment · 04/06/2016 14:59

The refugee liaison person did not turn up yesterday, and there was no answer at their office. Sigh.

But the three boxes of random stuff are gone, so...progress!

MrsNutella, MK talks about a 'click point' when you feel you have exactly the right amount of stuff in a category.

I don't know if I've reached that for anything quite yet though...

MrsNutella · 04/06/2016 22:12

Strange yes you're right. She does! I folded down pages of the book when reading so that I could quickly refer back to bits I found important. I'll have to flick back through it, but first retrieve it from DH. He has said he will read it.... Hmm if he does it will be an event worthy of a full page spread in a daily newspaper!

StrangeOddment · 05/06/2016 06:14

Grin With a big picture of him reclining in a chair reading the book, and maybe a tasteful interior shot of your house MrsNutella?

My husband is very attached to the stuff he has...but only in certain categories, so he doesn't care much if I recycle his grotty T-shirts, as long as he has enough.

I'm stressed as all get out about moving, but I am looking forward to cracking open my stored stuff and sorting it out. Especially my photos!

(I'm sad. But it's good to have goals in life.)

stiffstink · 06/06/2016 23:03

I have slight kondoing failure to report. About 10 weeks ago I passed on lots of DS's old clothes to DSis and returned some I had borrowed from her for DD.

Unfortunately, I must have picked up a bag of rubbish that was meant to go in the wheelie bin. DSis has had stinking rubbish in her loft for 10 weeks.

OliveBranchCollins · 07/06/2016 07:11

Oh no poor DSis

GrubbyWindows · 07/06/2016 08:42

stiff that is awful! And hilarious!!
Cautionary tale about just chucking stuff in the loft without going through it though...

MrsNutella · 07/06/2016 10:15

strange it sounds like you've got the measure DH [grun] although he is getting with the concept and helping me to clear some stuff out. And he has sort of done his clothes and office.

stiff poor Dsis! I don't really want to imagine how awful that must have smelt.

But speaking of rubbish I have a bag that needs to go out to the garage... Our rubbish is now collected forthrightly and it is forecast to be 25+ all week Confused

StrangeOddment · 08/06/2016 07:04

This day next week a charity are coming to pick up all my unwanted furniture before the move, hooray!

This does require us to disassemble it though. Ah well.

And I went through the paperwork yesterday, and have three folders to keep and tossed out a bit more.

Now working on finishing packing, and cleaning the house. Bleh.

stiffstink · 08/06/2016 12:44

DS's bedroom needed blackout curtains (instead of curtains that are a foot too narrow) so I've bought those today and have already put them up. There are 4 Ikea spice racks to go up as book shelves then that's his room done.

His old curtains are now up in our bedroom temporarily and our old curtains are in yet another charity bag (the 3rd this week) because they are dangerously long and can't go on the window on the landing.

DS hasn't played with megabloks or his farm for about 6 months so they were due to go in the loft last night. Lo and behold he asked where his megabloks and farm where before DH managed to sneak them up.

I think I'm going to swap a few toys around so he doesn't just play with cars. He has a fantastic wooden train set neatly kept in his bedroom but he tends to play downstairs, so I'll do some toy rotation tonight when he is asleep (he sleeps through anything, including me kondoing next to him as he snores).

The money's gone, keepon, you won't get it back by having them on the shelf. You've just got to stick to the joy criteria. If keeping the joyful films/CDs in their boxes rather than folders is more joyful, do it!
Also- maybe do a different category first if this one is hard...

jimjamsparklepants · 08/06/2016 18:37

Hi
I've also been following the km method & all was going so well until I got to cd's. They are in a cupboard which I plan to dismantle, I don't listen to them ( I stream music these days) & my head tells my to get rid. However my heart is reluctant to let these treasures go. Must be brave Confused

SayAGreatBigThankyou · 08/06/2016 20:35

Talk some sense into me about old uni books! As in 20 year old books that are battered and scrawled on so unsellable. They defined me so much at the time [uber geek] that I'm finding it hard, even though they bring me no joy and should just be recycled!! They are English Lit ones so maybe I should replace with naice editions?!

MrsNutella · 08/06/2016 21:12

I found with CDs that I could let them go once I knew I had a digital copy of all of them (many many thanks to DH for that) and we have sold or donated all of them except for about ten CDs that I couldn't part with.
We sold them (not for very much sometimes) to an online company like musicmagpie who will pay you a pittance for your old CDs but it feels better somehow because you have mentally "sold" them.

Books I have gone through a couple of times and whittled them down. Just really looked at a book, felt nothing and put it aside to go in a box. I think it can't be a bad thing to hang on to some items and then revisit them when you've perhaps dealt with another category.

I've pretty much tackled toiletries and it was really easy. I started by chucking out all the stuff that was out of date. Or a sample that I knew was old. All in the bin. Then I chucked the stuff that is probably out of date but I can't be certain. I chucked it because we don't use it and that is why it is sitting around. It's been brilliant.

I've also gone through towels a bit and linen.

But I still need to give the downstairs a really good going over. I need to go through the two Expedit/Kallax things we have in the living / play area.... Some of it just needs to be better organised. Which means I really need to do some shopping for some boxes....
