I'm struggling with the cardigans myself.
I want to fold them as that what works best with my space - but unless I get it out and hang it up the evening before, theyvare coming out crinkled.
Need to work on my folding perhaps.
I've tried a sort of rolling too.

Zippidydoodah · 07/03/2016 17:14

Anyone fancy re-folding my 2 yo's drawers?! She pulled EVERYTHING out instead of napping!

StrangeOddment · 08/03/2016 06:38

Reconnecting too! Was pretty much done-for-then pre-baby but now have mountains of kid stuff, kid paperwork and maternity stuff to sort through.

I will say goodbye to my too-big maternity jeans with gratitude, since they were such a lifesaver but never did quite fit right. Joyful breastfeeding-friendly stuff for the next while at least!

And making a thank you card list...

So impressed by all of you, and the accounts of DHs doing stuff! Mine will never be a minimalist but we are travelling much lighter than before. (Literally. It turns out we're not moving immediately but we have to move in a few months, so...yup, back on the kondo train!)

wulfy1010 · 08/03/2016 07:41

Hi I got the book a few days ago and started sorting clothes yesterday. I am astounded by how much room I have made already. I have thrown out two bin bags and have about 2 bags of stuff for the charities. I am going to sort out the last of my clothes today hopefully (trousers, shorts, hanging stuff, scarves and other odds and ends).

I am off work with a chest infection so have to take it slow but also on steroids for my asthma so completely hyper Smile. Will have to find the right balance.

Clothes seem to be going so fast but I assume it slows down when you get to the less defined categories?

wulfy1010 · 08/03/2016 09:58

Trousers, shorts and blouses are done. Why did I have so many pairs of jeans? I only ever wear two of them. Down to random stuff likes scarves, gloves etc. Cleared out shoes and coats a while back. Taking a rest and leaving them for this afternoon.
Now to decide what to do tomorrow Grin. Should be books but I have wanted to sort the kitchen out forever so I might skip to that

CaveMum · 08/03/2016 12:01

Did my wardrobe yesterday. I now have 2 bags for charity, 2 packages to send to Smalls for All and 2 trouser suits and 3 dresses ready to EBay!

I'm off to TK Maxx at lunchtime to buy some nice storage boxes for my scarves/pashminas Grin

Jemster · 08/03/2016 14:07

Can someone explain how to sort clothes please? It sounds as though everyone manages to get rid of loads. Is it really that easy?
Our house is bursting at the seams with stuff & a lot of it is clothes. We have 2 laundry baskets always overflowing, piles of clothes in every room, also towels & bedding. I looked round this morning as I was rushing out the door for work and felt like crying!
It's overewhelming & yet I actually have very few decent clothes myself, alot of it is dh's & dc's.
I need to give the kondo'ing a go but how do I decide what to get rid of? Not much of my stuff fills me with joy but I need some clothes!
Help please.

wulfy1010 · 08/03/2016 15:36

I don't really feel joyful about my clothes either. I split them into groups so trousers I split into jeans, other casual, smart (I wear a uniform for work so the last group was pretty small)
Then I weeded out the ones from each group that I a) didn't like anymore or b) didn't fit anymore and chucked them. Then I took a hard look at what was left and thought about how many pairs I actually needed. Eg I don't wear jeans very often so really didn't need eight pairs. I picked out the four that fit best and felt good to wear and chucked the rest.

Hope that helps

Nan0second · 08/03/2016 16:01

Read the book! Honestly, it's the best way and makes things really easy.
In short, get every single thing out (ie all tops) and pile it up. This is really important. Then touch everything individually. Does it spark joy (make you feel happy)? If yes, keep. If no -> charity shop / rags recycling.
Then YouTube lavendaire videos on how to fold stuff.
After tops, bottoms then dresses then coats, underwear, outerwear, jewellery, gym wear.

However it is so much easier if you read the book (or listen to the audiobook via YouTube!)

MadauntofA · 09/03/2016 07:39

Did anyone see Back in time on bbc2 last night - gave me the rage. The annoying presenter was suggesting what will happen in the future, gave them the MK book and told them to remove everything as minimalism was the future - made a joke of it, didn't explain, and the family were left with one tiny photo and v little else! If you haven't watched it, and have embraced MK then please don't watchAngry

wulfy1010 · 09/03/2016 10:24

Went through books and found it surprisingly easy given how I attached I am to them. Actually got the joy feeling that was missing when I did clothes (just not bothered by clothes really). Went from two floor to ceiling bookcases with some shelves with double rows plus books in random places around the house to less than half the shelves filled. Will have to go back to rethink the Agatha Christies later (the Terry Pratchetts are definitely staying). Also cookbooks as I may take pictures of some of the recipes before they go but don't have that many of them anyway.
Process was

  1. Books all out on the floor (clean bookshelves, they were mankyGrin)
  2. Pick up each book
  3. If joy put it back on the shelf
  4. If not then scan with Ziffit app and put in pile to sell or pile for charities (see charity pile photo)
A few went in the bin due to loose pages or cat mauled pages but made £85 with Ziffit and the courier is coming tomorrow. Now just need to sort out the charity stuff. Don't really want to start anything else as I am confined to the house at the moment so can't get rid of charity or tip stuff.

Hello everyone, I have made a start but finding it so difficult with a toddler around. We are moving in a few weeks and I don't want to take loads of stuff we don't really need with us. Also, I have been frustrated for so long living in a tiny house with too much stuff, I think kondoing before we go to a bigger house will be life changing! I think I might go and empty the airing cupboard in a mo...

CaveMum · 09/03/2016 14:39

Wulfy what a good idea re the Ziffit app! I may do the same myself when it comes to tackling our books. DH is already making unhappy noises about getting rid of them! He's got SciFi books he inherited from an uncle and I've never seen him pick up to read - we've been together 14 years!

NotEnglish · 09/03/2016 15:13

I'm still stuck in papers :-(
I'm selfemployed, so loads of paper will sadly have to stay.

The paper pile is incredibly high, I've worked on it 4 or 5 evenings already and I'm only 1/4 through.
Have started with the 'easier' piles, but still feel like I'm not really making progress.
Paper bins were emptied on monday, full to the rim, most of it was mine.

The room is still filled with paper, loads of boxes, untidy piles and lever arch files...

I hate paper!

Had to do random komono kategories yesterday to feel some the 'spark joy' feeling and get back in kondo-mood
Who knew that we owned 28 tealight candleholders? Shock

So candles, candlesticks, essential oils, and christmas ornaments sorted, from 3 big boxes down to one an stored beautifully in a drawer. Had to keep 2 candlesticks that don't spark joy for me because my dh loves them, but that's ok. Everything is easily accsesible in the drawer.

Put the non-joy-sparkers in a box in front of the house with a "free" sign this morning and they are gone already. Hope they spark joy in somebody else :-)

What categories are all of you doing today?

bilbodog · 09/03/2016 16:31

Hi, new to this as well. Just read the book and all this thread. Have done underwear and jewellery so far and eager to get going on the rest. My kitchen us the worst place but building myself up for it. I am hoping this new sense of tidiness continues into my garden when the weather improves as it is looking very straggly!

StitchesInTime · 09/03/2016 17:03

I'm a bit stalled in papers as well.

It's our own fault for our previous "just shove everything in a box" filing method. But there are boxes and boxes and boxes full of paper, all of which have to be looked at in case there's something important stuffed in there with the junk papers.

Luckily our council will take away unlimited amounts of extra recycling on bin day, provided it's put out in clear bin bags.

QuerkyJo · 09/03/2016 17:32

Flushed with success after my OH discarded 47 years of paper work, yes 47 years, not a typo,

HOW ABOUT THIS.

We were going to a birthday lunch today and he said he would have to stop and get a wine gift bag. In one second I opened the cupboard under the stairs went to the box for bags and produced 3.

He thinks I am magic.

frenchfancy · 09/03/2016 19:09

You are magic querky .

HaveAWeeNap · 09/03/2016 19:11

I think you're magic too!

Nan0second · 09/03/2016 19:28

Wow that is amazing!
I got home from my kit day to find my husband had discarded about 1000 photos! He'd started sentimental without me...

Nan0second · 09/03/2016 19:28

(And I am overjoyed)

CaveMum · 09/03/2016 20:23

I recruited my first concert today! I was chatting with a colleague who said she was finally de cluttering her house (her mum died last year so she has a garage and house stuffed full of things she couldn't bear to part with at the time). I asked her if she'd heard of Kondo and she said no, so I pointed her in the direction of some online links. She texted me this evening to say shed bought the book and was excited to get cracking Grin

CaveMum · 09/03/2016 20:26

Of course that should be "convert"

Ivytheterrible · 09/03/2016 21:13

Long time lurker here who has just got going with clothes. Never realised how much crap I had that was never worn!

What do you do about kids clothes? I have 3 girls so lots of stuff waiting to be handed down to the next child?

I understand your pain with the DHs. Mine have 94 t shirts when we moved 5 years ago and has accumulated more! He doesn't even wear t shirts apart from at the gym or when doing DIY. Angry

stiffstink · 10/03/2016 12:20

Urgh, DH has 3 drawers of tshirts and a full wardrobe rail of shirts. He wears logo'd polo shirts for work and I have just realised he has no use for all those work shirts!

His 3 drawers are separated into his regularly worn tshirts (fine), his sportswear (can't remember the last time he exercised in any of them) and his DIY tshirts (he did some DIY in early Jan but doesn't need a huge choice of clothing for the rare times he gives in to my nagging)!
