My DDs are trying to hinder my efforts. In the book MK says that it is the mother that is the problem, that mothers will save sentimental items and stop daughters throwing things out - here it is my DDs

I was doing my accessories, I decided that my jewellery box is not the best way to store things, so I dumped about 75% and then put the rest on a hanging rail inside my wardrobe door. DD3 (9) comes in to "help" and immediately spies the pile of necklaces ready to be binned and starts claiming them. DD2 (14) then comes home sees the empty jewellery box and claims it for her own.

Still got rid of 2 bin bags though - 1 for bin and 1 for charity.

Marie Kondo isn't pregnant any more, the baby is already a few months old Smile
Maybe there is more about children in the Spark Joy book?

So far, my dc has kondoed really well. He got rid of some stuff and we set up a toy rotation for some other stuff. He plays way better now and tidyig up is a lot quicker even if it is still not his favourite pasttime.
3 shelves stayed empty and are used to store the current lego buildings so the floor is can be completely free.
I adapted the folding to make it easier for him and he's absolutely in to it. He'll turn 6 in a few months.

NotCitrus · 25/02/2016 22:27

Will keep all P60s and P45s fannyglum!
Have just shredded another shredderful of statements. Hope to manage to start on toys this weekend, firstly moving as much stuff as possible out of the lounge into bedrooms. Our main problem is not wanting to dump in landfill stuff that could be useful to someone, which is all very laudable but does lead to stuff sitting around until it can be taken away...

MrNC has just brought lots of stuff into the house from another house I'm sorting out, as various people visiting this weekend 'said they want to look through it' - aaagh! It was all neatly bagged in the other house ready for the homeless shelter to collect as much as they wanted...

Rummikub · 26/02/2016 01:27

Hello all. I'm enjoying reading everyone's successes and I think it's having an effect on me. I've managed to sort out 3 random bags of paperwork into 1 ring binder :)

mercifulTehlu · 26/02/2016 08:09

Hi all. I've re-Kondoed my clothes and feel much better for it! Have also Kondoed the study, which I didn't get round to doing on my first Konmari attempt.

It's great to have my clothes all nicely folded again, and lovely to be able to find stuff in the study, but I actually think I could get rid of more. I think that because I'd already Kondoed once, I thought I just needed to re-tidy rather than purge again. But I don't think I got rid of enough stuff the first time around!

LadyMacnet · 27/02/2016 08:36

NotEnglish I'd like to train up my DS2 to be better at tidying up. He will generally put toys away after several reminders so I'll see if I can get him better at doing his clothes. This weekend I need to choose some other quick fix categories. Might go for bakeware and kitchen gadgets I think.

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 27/02/2016 08:41

When I heard Marie had had a baby I thought there will be the definitive Kondo method book out..

in 18 years!

CutYourHairAndGetAJob · 27/02/2016 09:04

The bit in her book where she says not to stock up on consumables because it is exciting to run out of things made me laugh, they are clearly not the words of someone who has ever run out of nappies at 3am, or the ONLY shape of pasta that their two year old will eat Grin

FannyGlum · 27/02/2016 09:48

If the baby is only a few months old she'll be at the slightly smug "see they don't make much mess" stage. Wait until the baby is a tyrannical toddler!

Methenyouplus4 · 27/02/2016 11:52

Defo harder with children. We have 4 and a big age gap between first and second. It's tough deciding what to keep for them. So far, nearly all toys such as wooden trains/ farm etc were definitely worth storing in loft. I'm struggling with whether or not to save books as dc1 has loads but they are bulky and take up a lot of room. Thinking perhaps I'll save classics like my old Beano annuals and pass on to cousins anythibg that could easily be repurchased.

About to go and do second proper book cull and hoping to get paperwork done too as actually have very little left after first cull- all in a couple of folders now but have dumped a few random bits in a drawer with folders that need sorting. That's another problem with kids- important paperwork has to be quickly put somewhere safe do babies don't eat it/rip it, but don't always have time to sort.

GrubbyWindows · 27/02/2016 12:15

Haha cake you could be right- although she seems to be on a book tour at the moment so who knows.

Re paperwork- isn't that one of her points, don't keep it, and if you must, just keep it all stuffed into the one folder, and chuck things out as you riffle through looking for the things you need? So the drawer is actually very KonMari!

dulcefarniente · 27/02/2016 19:50

Just started here and dd (8) is talking about kondo-ing her bedroom (smile). If we can crack this between us we should have loads more time to spend on the fun stuff together.

HaveAWeeNap · 27/02/2016 20:23

Everyone is doing so well!

I'm stuck in the hell that is paperwork.

An insurance claim, settled and paid out. How long would you keep the paperwork and would you keep ALL of it? Every update letter, request for info, change of claim handler etc. Or just keep the final closed claim and pay out letter?

SisterMoonshine · 27/02/2016 20:42

Did DC's books - that's working out about a category a week for me so far.
And made a good start on papers - and OMG, there's my fridge!
I had no idea how much sorting out paperwork would tidy up my kitchen!
And the contagious thing - DD did her pin board and other stuff, and enjoyed herself! It so hope s contagious, I'm only doing it because I've caught it off all of you.
Marie says she has 3 categories for papers: an archive of 'stuff you have to hang on to', 'stuff you have but need to pull out more often' and a 'needs dealing with now'. And she aspires to have the 'deal with it now' file empty.
I can focus so much better on the task by ignoring the photos etc that I'm coming across until later.

HaveAWeeNap · 27/02/2016 23:28

Hmm. Maybe I could do a second cull at a later date.

I kind of feel like I've been on a continual de-cluttering mission for about three years now so finding it difficult to comprehend how we still have so much STUFF.

She does say six months to do it properly though, so perhaps I should stop trying to dash through each category and slow it down and do it properly.

WutheringFrights · 28/02/2016 00:04

I'm just checking in with a bit of a checklist to keep myself motivated!

I'm not following the method exactly as I'm recovering from a bit of pneumonia and can only do an hour or so at a time so can't just cause utter chaos in case I can't continue tidying.

I've definitely finished my own clothes as if I discard anymore I will be totally naked.
DDs clothes are also done, although I have a couple of tops I still need to lose because she caught me trying to discard them (she is 4)
I plan to do DSs clothes tomorrow - he is only 2 so I don't imagine there will be many arguments.
I am not even looking in DHs wardrobe and chest of drawers. Grin

I have sorted toiletries and medicines into one big basket of each.
The medicine basket needs re-organisation, but at least it is all in date now.

I have done all my books, including cookery books.
Plan to do kids books tomorrow. Should be quick. They have loads but most of them are still bring used (or thrown, or built into towers, or being used as steps to reach confiscated toys...)

Kitchen stuff - I have discarded loads! Cutlery and utensils mainly, but also an unused pressure cooker because they scare the beejesus out of me and I discovered we had 6 frying pans!!
Whenever we buy a new one we just don't seem able to throw the old one away. It's utterly ridiculous!
I now have one large trying pan and one small frying pan.
My kitchen cupboards are finally organised and I have put all foodstuffs in the larder and understairs cupboard which are next to each other, in preparation for the big pantry style space DH has promised me!
I have a saucepan cupboard, a baking cupboard (including cooling racks, baking trays, mixing bowls etc), a Kenwood attachment cupboard, a casserole dish and storage jar cupboard, and finally a panini press and waffle maker cupboard Blush
Is it weird I keep opening drawers and cupboards just to look at them...

Paperwork is kinda half done, it was all over the place and is now, at least, in one area so I can see what I am dealing with.

I think I need to regroup and start again properly as I've started flitting, so although I am discarding a lot I'm not finishing the tidying and organisation which means there is room for disorganisation to creep back in.

Sorry, this is a proper essay! I just wanted to document where I've got too so I can look back to see what I've achieved!

DH nodded approval at the newly organised kitchen and didn't take anything out of the charity pile so I'm feeling confident that he will soon 'get it'!

dulcefarniente · 28/02/2016 00:37

Stumbly can I ask what sort of books did well on Ziffit? Hardback or paperback? Novels? Non fiction?

HaveAWeeNap · 28/02/2016 02:21

Wuthering you are flying! Keep going. Amazing.

Methenyouplus4 · 28/02/2016 08:10

Wuthering- well done!

I was pretty impressed with myself yesterday. I went to do 2nd cull of books and realised there was not a single one that needed to go- obviously did a great job first time round. Everyone is a classic I read again (about 20 books).

Paperwork was already good- a couple of forms I need to sort/send off and that's fine.

I finally tackled regifting cupboard - two giant bags for charity and now a handful of gifts in each 'category' that I can see easily.

Next area- general stauonary. Where do people keep it? Pens, cello tape etc? I'm thinking I have a pretty empty kitchen drawer I could use? This is first time I feel like buying some sort of storage holder/organise would help. Any one got one they would recommend?

disappointed101 · 28/02/2016 08:29

Hello can I join? I started my London journey last Thursday. Have so far kondoed clothes and books. I have done well with the clothes...can actually see my wardrobe floor again and individual pieces that I forgot about! Books could be done better. We have so many books and we did get rid of quite a lot but there are some books I'm not mentally ready to get rid of quite yet. Hopefully when I have made my way through the book, I can change my mindset. I am eyeing things in my bedroom and kitchen and have already eyed things that are definitely going!

disappointed101 · 28/02/2016 08:30

Kondo journey not London journey!

QuerkyJo · 28/02/2016 08:35

I got some inserts for drawers from TKMAXX. They had loads, metal, plastic and Perspex. Some were individual, but other lock together.

Methenyouplus4 · 28/02/2016 08:37

Dis- maybe class the books as sentimental items and so them last?

Also meant to ask- any tips for storing shoes? We are a family of six so have A LOT by the time you take into account wellies, football boots, school shoes etc etc. So much shoe storage is just ugly or bulky considering how many shoes it stores.
