Thanks QuerkyJo that list sounds like a good idea, I will find that & give it a go.

WutheringFrights · 24/02/2016 22:27

Is there an online checklist anywhere, I have Kondo'd the printer and can't be fussed getting it back out the cupboard!
Is there an app or summat that I can check off on my phone as I go? I've googled but come up with nothing useful.

HaveAWeeNap · 24/02/2016 22:50

QuerkyJoe - how far up thread is the mini list you mentioned? Sounds useful

NotEnglish · 24/02/2016 23:03

Done clothing and books. Both went fine, kept about half of both I would guess.
Clothes went to a local refugee camp, books to rebuy and momox, what they wouldn't buy I took to a local book-swap/free library thing.
One last box of books sits here, waiting for a friend coming on Saturday, she wants to have a look through, what she doesn't take will go to momx and book-swap again.

Next is paperwork, which I've been dreading. I'm really really bad with paper. There is lot all over the house. Knowing paper would be next actually made me stall with the books, just so that I wouldn't need to move on.
Suddenly feel motivated though an justt cleared my hobby table to gather all the paper on. Will probably take me weeks to sort!

I realised I still struggle with the joy sparking thing. Although it makes perfect sense in theory, I seem to have problems feeling the joy when I hold the item. Kept some clothes because I wear them often and realised weeks later I don't actually like them that much.
Kept some books which I thought spark joy when sorting, but when I look at the bookshelves now, I will spot a book and think "Why ever did I decide to keep that one???"

Anybody else experiencing this?

NotEnglish · 24/02/2016 23:05

I've started to write my own Komono-subcategory-list but as it is not in english, that won't be of any help to you, sorry

randomsabreuse · 25/02/2016 07:13

Hello everyone

Been lurking for a while and bought the first book last night! I've always maintained I could be tidy if everything had its own place which wasn't under several other precariously stacked items so hopefully I will get nearer that goal.

I also have a 6 month old so want to counteract the inevitable accumulation of stuff for her by reducing mine - my DH isn't really a hoarder, probably in reaction to his mum who is!

We finally own our own house and have nearly finished doing it up also increasing motivation - have been living in a project for 9 months which also motivates me to get sorted and enjoy having all the rooms available!

Did a quick trawl through clothes disposing of a load of too short tops - too short at the back as well as the front so no idea how they ever fitted - boobs should reduce when I stop feeding! Kept some old but comfortable knickers in hope of a future pregnancy - more appealing than paper ones - there's joy in that, surely!

Will definitely need to work by sub category until I can move in the loft bedroom area which is available as a spare room (and needs clearing and redoing as the last stage of the project!)

ChishandFips33 · 25/02/2016 07:42

Querky I use these jars for the powder and a vintage spoon for a scoop which sits in the metal frame around the lid.
The Kilner bottle for the fabric conditioner was 99p from Home Bargains and the white vinegar storage was a used M&S pop bottle with the same type of lid - covered the label and added some twine wrapped round - you've got me thinking about my shampoo storage now! not sure I can be bothered decanting that though

No good at linking but

Kondo thread 8 by BerieBotts. 8 April 2015 14.48
Link is

jershaansdupcom/konmaricheclist

I just googled Konmari checklist and it brought it up. It is two pages spit into about 200 categories.

QuerkyJo · 25/02/2016 08:52

Try again jershaanddup.com/konmari-checklist-free-printable/

QuerkyJo · 25/02/2016 09:00

Thanks for that ChishandFips

stiffstink · 25/02/2016 09:04

200 categories?!

QuerkyJo · 25/02/2016 09:35

I know, two full pages!!!!!!!' But if you are short of time and space I think it helps focus.

For example kitchen. No one can take everything out of the kitchen and lay it all out. Unless you live in a very small caravan of course😃 But there are 30 categories listed. So 20 minutes each day might work

5 mins gather category onto table
5 mins to chuck away, disgusting/never use/ WTF did I buy this for stuff
5 mins to clean your 'spark joy' spatula or whatever
5 mins to put back.

GrubbyWindows · 25/02/2016 09:50

Wow, that list is amazing- it really made me think how personal categories are- for me clothing:tops is too big, I need:
Woolly jumpers
Long sleeve tops
Short sleeve tops
Vest tops

Or even narrower than that!
But I don't need sub categories of hair care equipment.
In the pantry, pasta is a category for me, but not candies.

I am super nosy, I love the little insights you get into people's lives on here, and in lists like that, heh.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/02/2016 09:56

There are a lot of categories i dont need, its not quite as daunting a list as it looks.

iwantavuvezela · 25/02/2016 10:09

Well I am making some headway, but still need to do the full "Kondo" on some categories. But the other day managed to take out 4-5 big bin bags to the charity shop, and another big bin bag of just recycling! Went through all our "medicines" etc, most of it was outdated!

I am getting rid of obvious things, and trying to put things in places, so when I come to that category I can do it! Probably not the best way, but I needed to clear out some of the stuff so I could think!

I have done our utility (its a space rather than a room) and it feels good to be able to find things again!

I have also done the towels etc, and I have realized that I have a certain amount of space, so will use that, anything extra needs to go. What a relief that was, because what I usually do is tidy it up, then within weeks it becomes a mess as everything is shoved in as there is not enough space!

I have realised the enormity of the job! I am bringing a file to work and during lunch break or when I have some time , will sort out paperwork file by file and use the shredder at work.

Enjoying reading the success's of everyone else! I am determined to try and make this big tidy lasting, and not something that within 6 months I wonder what happened!

HaveAWeeNap · 25/02/2016 10:14

Thanks so much QuerkyJoe Thanks

TomYumSoup · 25/02/2016 11:32

Hello, I had quite a declutter last year but have just got one of the books so doing it again with more gusto. Best thing I have got rid of is my hospital letters from pre about six years ago. I have various chronic conditions and normally keep copies of my letters. The old ones were just in a box on top of my wardrobe so didn't look at them but now I feel so much better/lighter, I may get rid of more! Can I just ask those of you who use Ziffit, how do you make any money. I have just spent half an hour inputting bar codes and its only up to a fiver. Is it because you literally have hundreds of items or is it paying more than 20-40p per item?

QuerkyJo · 25/02/2016 11:44

Konmari cups

ChishandFips33 · 25/02/2016 13:54

Whoever said up thread not to link items to monetary value... thank you
There's a few things I've chewed over getting rid of due to the cost but by disengaging that thought has made it so much easier!
4 more bags to the charity shop I go!

ClarenceTheLion · 25/02/2016 14:11

NotEnglish In an early thread, a Japanese MNer actually said that 'spark joy' was a bit of a mis-translation. I don't know if anyone took note of the post, as I can't remember the exact wording, but I think she said it's more closely translated as 'Does this item resonate with you'? I don't think it literally has to make you joyful. If it did, I'd be sitting in an empty house right now! I think it comes back to the classic 'Do you love it? Is it useful?' approach to decluttering.

misskatamari · 25/02/2016 15:28

Jumping on board! I started with clothes last Friday and am totally addicted! I've done my clothes and the kids, books, and then been a bit naughty and done some sections out of order like kids crafts. It feels amazing though, and I'm already finding I have places to put things, which has never happened before! I did medicines and cosmetics earlier and couldn't believe how much out of date stuff I had spread around the house! You just really don't realise how much stuff you have in your house do you!

Zippidydoodah · 25/02/2016 17:55

I have joined the facebook group and am enjoying seeing pictures of people's kondoed homes /cupboards! It's called konmarie uk- chat Smile

NotEnglish · 25/02/2016 17:58

My husband asked me today why we have a empty shelf in our wardrobe :-)

SisterMoonshine · 25/02/2016 18:56

That dresser of cups looks fab (I really must do some before and after pics as I go round).
Did recipe books etc today. I'm dreading the other kitchen stuff later - but also can't wait for it to look like those cups.
Kids books next. Then I'm done with books.

SisterMoonshine · 25/02/2016 19:04

Did someone mention that Marie Kondo is pregnant?
I do think some of us are more up against it than her. I know she says that if you do it properly you only have to do it once - everything has it's place. But my life has changed so much since being in this house. Having DC's, the growing out of stuff, the sentimental attachments to items because of them or for them for the future, then the various hobbies they get into etc.
I feel a book coming on that deals with konmarie as a parent.
