I've just found out about this fab way of organising your life, thanks to a kind poster on the 'people who are efficient ' thread. I was wondering if any other MNers are Bullet Journalers? here is the website if anyone's interested.

It's only a couple of days since I started my journal, but I can already see that it's going to revolutionise my ability to be organised. I've tried loads of apps, lists etc in the past, but have never really hit on a system that worked for me. I have very high hopes of this one though (plus it involves pretty stationery Smile )!

Hurray; I've started. I feel more organised already. I didn't realise how many nasty little lists I had in different places... on post-its, on my phone, emails to myself... Now they are contained Grin

Does the Bullet Journal complete unpleasant tasks on my behalf?

ContentsPage · 26/01/2016 12:06

FairnotFair

Yes. It was great just offloading all the lists/ ideas/ maybe some days into my journal. I made mine on Sunday and I feel so much better already!

I'm loving the Habit Tracker idea. Want to track vitamin and exercise. I'm sure there will be more things to add too.

Scattymum101 · 26/01/2016 14:58

I've not looked into this too much but it sounds similar to what I do and I find it really helps.
I have a big list on a phone app and then a daily to do that I set up repeats for if things need done on the same day each week and I can click a button to pass it over to the next day if I don't get to it so I never forget things anymore. Love it.

HalfwayUpALadder · 26/01/2016 20:08

I now have a BuJo for home and a BuJo for work. Am hoping it particularly streamlines the work stuff!

WhoisLucasHood · 26/01/2016 20:21

I'm up for this, I love lists. I'm already on my 3rd diary in 9 months as they never quite work for me. I loved my filofax but found it bulky and the ruled paper was quite tiny. I spent too long last night on pinterest and youtube nosying at some very creative bullet journals. I'm guessing theres no fast rules with it, they can be any sized journals?

mercifulTehlu · 26/01/2016 22:40

I think that on the website they recommend an A5 notebook - I guess you want something big enough but not too bulky to carry around. I used to have a Filofax and found it a bit small and fiddly. And the inserts were expensive. And I got bored with having the same cover but having to chuck out all the contents every year. I like the idea of having years' worth of BuJos to look back on!

I made dh join in with my evening BuJo session today (ahem - that sounds kind of dodgy). He had quite a few diy/garden tasks to add to my Mega List!

OP posts:
AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 27/01/2016 11:33

At least BuJo is a more appropriate shortened form than BJ Grin.

I like my filofax, but it is fiddly. I'm finding A5 a much better size for writing on. My current insert is a DodoPad, which is actually a bit BuJo-like as it has space for lists and doodles but again, just too small to be really useful.

I did freak myself out a bit on youtube and pinterest and had a moment where I needed to make it PRETTY but I know I wouldn't use it properly if I felt I had to make it look good too. I do like the idea of recording the weather though. I'm planning on using my BuJo as my veg growing diary as well this year so that could be useful.

I did splash out on the luechtturm (sp?) though and I'm glad I did. Nice hard cover, two bookmarks and a pocket at the back.

mercifulTehlu · 27/01/2016 12:01

I definitely fancy a Leuchtturm for my next one! I know exactly what you mean about making it pretty - it's a nice idea, but a) I'm not particularly artistic, b) if you want to write in your journal when you're out and about, you'd need to take a load of coloured pens with you and c) it uses up time instead of saving time!

I had a look at some on Pinterest, and wondered how these people had time to actually do any of the stuff - it all seemed to be filled with checklists of Devotions and Time to Myself and Meditation, all done up in different colours and fonts and beautifully decorated. I wanted to see how Hassled Mum of Three with Two Pets and a Job had done hers Grin.

Although, i'm making good progress with mine (currently of work ill at home, so plenty of time), but no way can i manage colour coding, drawings etc unless I don't bother with the "google dishwasher manual to find how to add salt" and "take chicken out of freezer" on my current daily to do list.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 27/01/2016 12:10

although I love the dotted paper notebooks - are they american, or can I get them (cheaply) in the UK?

mrsmortis · 27/01/2016 12:54

I don't quite bullet journal, I use my own system that's very close though (something I developed over time from my work logbooks). Writing down everything I need to do has saved by bacon many a time and nothing electronic has worked for me yet.

But what the stationary porn on youTube ,that I moved onto from the bullet journalling videos, got me fixed on are the Midori Travellers Notebooks (or in my case copycats as the real ones are too expensive). they are the perfect dimensions for me and I've found them really flexible. I've been using them for over 12 months now so I know that they work for me.

I have 2 one for general use and one for studying (I'm doing a masters part time). The general use one has 4 booklets in a monthly calendar, a squared notepad for personal stuff and 2 squared notepads for work stuff (I go through these faster so I need 2 to have a reasonable amount of history with me in case I need it in meetings). I prefer squared paper to lined or blank. I need the lines to keep neat but with squares I can turn the pages around as needed.

mercifulTehlu · 27/01/2016 13:06

Ooh - I never thought of the potential for turning the pages around, mrsmortis! Might have to go for a squared one next time.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 27/01/2016 13:14

I've seen these travellers notebooks mentioned, are they pretty much like a filofax?

I accidentally ordered plain paper for my notebook, but it does come with one of those sheets that you put underneath your page and you can choose to have either squares or lines so that helps. I'm going to aim for dotted or squares next time though.

I suppose it makes sense that if you want to practice drawing or calligraphy you should do it in your bullet journal because of the whole idea of one book for everything but I'll most likely stick to doodling whilst on the phone. Grin I don't think it's a bad thing for them to look good, but it would add pressure on me if I felt I had to do it and I have enough anxiety without all that as well! But having said all that, part of the beauty of this system is that it can evolve depending on what you need from it and if in the future I want to get more creative - I can! A PP mentioned using multiple diaries because they are never quite right and that's how I feel about my current diary.

HalfwayUpALadder · 27/01/2016 19:41

I bought a three pack of moleskine notebooks yesterday - £13. Daylight robbery but I wanted one with squares!

They are slightly wider and taller than A5 but actually a lovely size.

HalfwayUpALadder · 27/01/2016 19:44

This is my work one - 12 mth forward look and snap of a monthly view.

I have a moleskine, squared. I started doing my bullet journal and then realised I don't want to put everything in it. I want to have a finance, parties, home improvement, projects, basically mid to long term stuff I need to keep working at.

ContentsPage · 27/01/2016 22:13

That's looming very pretty HalfWay.
Love it! I've treating myself to some colourful pens if I stick with this journal for 3 months!

ICJump · 27/01/2016 22:15

Do moleskin's have 31 lines so you can do a whole month?
Currently using a cheapy which is fine but sines have to double up days

ICJump · 27/01/2016 22:17

Only two kids here. But a part time job and study.

No coloured pens or sticky notes

Just marking my place for later, another bullet journal fan here!

mercifulTehlu · 28/01/2016 19:07

I've just made a real life convert to bullet journal ! My friend was a life-long Filofax user but was complaining that hers was looking a bit tatty and that anyway she was finding its small size annoying. "Aha!" I said, and launched into my BuJo enthusiast's spiel Grin.
I've set out my calendar for February, but haven't put any tasks on my Feb task page yet. Am putting in my application for a job tomorrow so my bullet journal may soon have a bit more to cope with!
