Decluttering accountability buddies?

2016 is the year I'm going to get my stuff sorted out properly - but I might need you to help keep on track!

I have a minor shopping addiction, which hinges mostly on books and indie make up/perfume, but does include lots of other things - we moved house six months ago and after a big declutter then, it's starting to get silly again.

I'd like to stop bringing so much stuff into the house, and get rid of at least five items per day until I feel like the house is no longer bursting at the seams!

So, anyone up for keeping me accountable and getting some support with decluttering in return? Maybe we should start with a January no buy? :)

Oh I've only just found this thread, can I join as I need some accountability! I'm going to do the declutter month thing in February as there's no way I can catch up for January, but I'm going to do it backwards, starting with 29 items on the 1st, 28 on the 2nd etc.

Me and DH both hoard, and we have long awaited twins (6yo) who all the family love and buy too many presents for so the house is bursting at the seams. It's so messy I hate inviting people round.

This has been a journey of self discovery for me. Two thing have really come home to me.

The first is that in my mind, I am very critical of OH refusal to dispose of things. For example, a man who has done no DiY for 20 years, owns 3 tool boxes, full of rubbishy tools. But I now realise I am the same. I only use foundation and blusher, but I have 5 make-up bags. 3 of them empty and never used.

So I agree with starting with the large numbers, because 7 bits of old make up, 3 bags, 4 unworn belts, 3 pairs of knickers that have seen better days, old pens, stuff from the kitchen drawer, bits of China that never get used, the numbers mount up quite easy.

It is easy to chuck away little things first, even though you don't think they will make much of an impact. This brings me to my second bit of self discovery.

once you start, it gets easier. If 12 things are laying around in a room, another 3 useless bits of tat don't make any difference. However, once those 12 things are cleared away, the other 3 stick out like a sore thumb.

I now find that when I go into a room, open a cupboard or look in a drawer, I consciously look for things that are displeasing. Sometimes they just need putting away, sometimes need going into my 'not sure' box'. I feel much calmer now that I can see some progress for my efforts

2boysnamedR · 30/01/2016 23:37

I wish I was seeing more progress from my efforts.

I am going to do a big sort tomorrow as Dh as going away soon so I just need to think small until he's back. Four kids And two of them under four I will be sidetracked.

I agree that once you have thrown out some things its immediately easier to get rid of more. Taking breaks for days really sets me back re my mindset.

Ginxed - that sounds like a great plan. I think starting at the big number will be easier.

I will try to plod on doing 5-10 things at least a day. Then in Feb I will devide what's left by 28. That funds less scary.

I will get rid of it all. Better taking two months than not finishing.

Ditsy4 · 31/01/2016 10:04

I do think starting backwards is the thing to do. I cleared loads at first but I'm struggling now. Thinking I might do the big numbers in Feb half term as it was easier when I was home. I might start again in Feb could do the low numbers while at work. Did make DH some coffee (cafeterier) just so I could throw the bag out Grin yesterday. Going to do bedside table today as looking messy. Still have craft room to finish if I paint the rest of the mini drawers I can throw out paint pots cos it will use rest up. Really pleased with them, so cheery.
Welcome Ginxed :)
Yes florentina me too.
Getting bit grumpy with OH because it stayed tidy when he was away and he keeps leaving stuff where it was tidy and dumped a whole basket of washing in bedroom which I now need to iron half and put all of it away. I hate that job. Found a pair of jeans that now fit and some Laura A ones that don't will I get in them ever? They are in good nick and were comfy. Hmmm. 6 months rule perhaps.

florentina1 · 31/01/2016 10:28

I now have a drawer technique. Sad sad person that I am.

Big box, tip the drawer contents into it.
Clean drawer.
Put back some items.
Walk away.
It is making a mess to begin with, because I have a box of stuff sitting On the floor but every so often I go back to it and do the, keep, chuck or doubt thing.

I am not being overly ambitious with numbers, because I find some of it quite difficult.

Great big success story, when I got chatting with another MNetter. I have posted 2 books to her that I know I would not have given to the Charity shop. That made me feel really good.

Ditsy4 · 31/01/2016 20:05

Brill!
I like the drawer idea. It is more satisfying to get it clean. Then try not to put stuff back the hardest bit is those things that don't match.

didireallysaythat · 31/01/2016 21:04

Another weekend and I've done nothing. Apart from throw away socks with holes. I need to sort out my wardrobe but can't face it at the moment as I'd have to face up to how many clothes don't fit because of my current size !!

Ginxed · 31/01/2016 23:08

I have been pre-sorting items ready to start with the big numbers tomorrow, I've listed 4 items for sale and picked out at least 12 more for the charity shop - big things too, scooters, bikes and backpacks to carry children in so I'm really clearing a decent amount of space!
By the time I've gone through a bookshelf tomorrow I should have my first 29 items ticked off the list.

florentina1 · 31/01/2016 23:58

Well done Ginxed

2boysnamedR · 01/02/2016 10:22

Well done ginxed!

I am going to photo some clothes for eBay. They will go on a short listing and if they don't go then it's down to the charity shop! I can't convince myself throwing them out is a waste if nobody wants them Grin

Ginxed · 02/02/2016 22:23

Well I managed 29 items yesterday (I'm counting the stuff on ebay in the 29 as they'll definitely be going) but I've had no time to sort anything today so I've got 55 items to find tomorrow -argh! Do you think a pair of shoes would count as 2 items as I'm sure the kids' wellies are too small now so they can go?

2boysnamedR · 02/02/2016 23:01

Well done! I have done four things so as predicted it's not a great week!

I would technically say shoes are one item - but I'm sure if put one in a bag, then the other one n the same bag a hour apart that's two items! Wink

If you want to be really good find a dried up pen for the other item. Pens made up five things for me a harder day

2boysnamedR · 05/02/2016 20:37

How is everyone getting on? I have done about 50 more things so it's going to take till the end of this month to clear January's target

FlossieTurner · 06/02/2016 07:23

You all seem to be doing great. Especially those of you who have major other things going on in your life.

I had a set back this week. Had to go to a funeral on Monday and found I had thrown out all my black trousers. But instead of buying one pair I bought 2. Got behind with the washing and as i had thrown away old pjs I ran out. Felt really sad about losing my cousin so I went to cheer myself up with new Pjs. Bought 3 pairs.

Now I know how I accumulate so much stuff.

I think the grabbing and chucking is good to. Usually little stuff. Odd clothes pegs laying in drawers are my thing of the moment. I have not had a washing line for years.

On the upside, I wanted some time alone so cleared up the garage. My eldest son is coming on Sunday to take everything to the tip.

Onwards and upwards.

2boysnamedR · 07/02/2016 11:22

Flossy - can you do a 2 outfit 1 in rule on clothes while you start to get to grips with declutterring? I try to do that rule and it's hard but it does make me more mindful.

Right I have 267 things left in my chuck. That's 12 things a day for the rest of themonthehich is doable surely?

Sister is doing a jumble sale in April and I have a nct baby sale booked up.

That's possibly tonnes of things to get rid of!

Also I can almost get all my clothes into my wardrobe. CBT therapist has suggested a hoarding group and I have decided I want to go. Ds was at a friends last week. The difference in his house and ours was shocking. Ds says he doesn't want friends here. He's ashamed. I'm ashamed too and I don't blame him.

QuerkyJo · 13/02/2016 16:52

This week I have taken out every one of my coats and piled them up. Charity shopped 2 and OH added one of his.

Have gathered up all the medicines from the house and put them in one box. 7 bottles of cough mixture!!!!!!!!!!. Can't even remember the last time we had a cough.

Old jumpers (for wearing when doing the garden). It is a tiny patch, not Kew so really did not need 5 gardening jumpers.

Finally sorted the junk box. The stuff where you are not quite sure where it belongs. Turns out the 90% of it belongs in the bin.

Wish I could do this for a living. I would not even want paying.

didireallysaythat · 13/02/2016 20:34

I've done so little.... I've sorted out 20 pairs of kids socks to pass on to someone else, and thrown out half a dozen pairs of socks with holes. I want to paint the spare room next weekend so I need to tidy up !

QuerkyJo · 13/02/2016 21:11

I have been spurred on because we have three of the littlest GKs arriving next week for half term.

Need to clear my crap so that they can fill my house up with theirs.

Ditsy4 · 14/02/2016 00:08

Oops lost the thread!
Been so busy/ tired from work I stopped but hopefully back to it on Monday. Have taken three items to a friend today and two items earmarked to take to church tomorrow. Hopefully find some more and start properly Monday am.

2boysnamedR · 14/02/2016 17:59

I'm chugging away, a few things a day and a trip to the tip today with Dh. We did manage to buy a toaster and kitchen scales but the last ones was broken.

The CBT is helping, I have now categorised all the kids saved clothes under a bed. I have bought so much for my Dd it was eye opening to write it all down.

I am doing a area a week in short bursts. Once it's all decluttered in the first pass I'm doing KonMarie. I just can't go in that hard yet.

The FB page is amazing for inspiration but I'm a while off yet being reading to 'change my life forever'

Ditsy4 · 14/02/2016 23:05

Hey, I think you are doing brilliantly.
I am planning a bedroom blitz again. I have two baskets of stuff sitting waiting to be put away. Mostly clothes and some bedding. I haven't much copacetic to put them although I have more than before. I need a new rail for the wardrobe and I need to sort shoes. If I could do the winter summer thing I could probably get everything away easily but we have bats and sometimes mice in the loft so I'm loathed to put clothes up there. I can't get in myself so have to wait till OH gets around to it!

Grumpyoldblonde · 15/02/2016 16:50

May I join in please? I have been reading this thread and it has inspired me, in the last 3 days I have taken 7 bags to the charity shop, and my bin is overflowing with rubbish I have thrown out. No more holey socks, fraying underwear, holey and bobbly t-shirts. I am trying to systematically pair chargers to their devices and any left over will be slung. I have gone through the house like a woman possessed and one I have really broken the back of it I will go again more slowly and thoughtfully. I need to get a shredder to deal with my paperwork and then will buy some pretty and pleasing files to store the necessary, I also plan to scan my insurance documents.
We have been pretty broke the last few months, but I have been working very long hours, things are hopefully on the up and I would like to be able to replace a few essentials (pillows/towels) with good quality new ones that I will enjoy using. Just knowing I have a few empty drawers now has strangely energised me and I feel a lot more positive (after a terribly anxious year)
I have hundreds of cd's to deal with yet and a mountain of soft toys but have made huge strides taking advantage of a few quiet day workwise. I will keep reading for tips and be cheering you on!

2boysnamedR · 15/02/2016 17:55

Yes please do join us! Have you though about selling the CDs to one of those company's like Magpie?

I'm still doing my 20 minute chunks it's working well so far. I have to tackle odd socks this week. I'm going to make my target on that alone!

Grumpyoldblonde · 15/02/2016 18:23

2boys I sold a few on Magpie, but tbh we have so many and I normally work very long hours, so there is a time issue plus I don't want to lose the momentum of this energy burst, just want them gone, so the charity shop I think. Socks are very satisfying to get rid of, I found it soothing to pair them up after checking and chucking for holes, a very easy win.

2boysnamedR · 17/02/2016 15:47

I had a bit of a shock yesterday re the true amount of my clutter. I have been to the tip and got rid of some things that should have gone months ago. Grandmas clock with high sentimental value but it was in truth just a cheap one and broken. We kept saying we would repair it but it's been years..... It had to go. A baby bouncer that has seen better days and the vibrator part was dodgy. I kept saying I would give it away / charity shop but it's gone into the dump to be passed on / fixed.

Feel so much better. Parting with the sentamental things is far more satisfying as it makes me see I'm never going to fix these things. My kids need the space more than broken tat.
