Stupid question time - how do you steam clean soft furnishins??

The arms of my sofa are really grubby and lots of people have recommended steam cleaning them. But how does that clean them? Surely if I blast them with my steam cleaner, it'll just make them wet??
I'm being thick aren't I?

I use the little brush attachment, it works wonders. My sofa etc doesn't haven't any visible dirt though.

What I would suggest is steam the arms first to loosen the dirt, then using a bowl of hot water, mixed with laundry detergent (it's safe for clothes, so won't need to buy an upholstery cleaner) not to much though as if the furniture gets soap logged it will actually attract new dirt quicker. Using a well rung out cloth rub the arms to transfer as much dirt as you can to the cloth.

Then steam again to restore the nap of the fabric and remove odour. HTH

I skip the steam step and just use original Stardrops in warm water and a cloth.
