The fledglings try something new for June

Hello, welcome back and jump on board for June.

As the thread title say we are mixing things up a bit this month, it might work. Then again it might not. It is still a long running thread and newbies will always be welcome. Usual disclaimer still applies "Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t! Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome"

But here is where this thread is mixing it up. No more daily links. The Big link you will need is the launch pad from here you can get the daily reminders/missions/zones etc...

The first link for the babysteps is the particularly waffly introduction to and first babystep here, through it you can get to all of the other links

Not sure this will work or the lack of daily posts will be a problem. So fingers crossed for a month of nattering and flying success...

It's quite amusing actually Linzer because you can actually access local British radio stations on it (of the most obscure nature) - my sister regularly appears on a Midlands radio show representing her charity - and it's quite useful to be able to listen in.

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2015 08:25

Ah, thanks SC. I did look into getting an internet radio a while back but wasn't sure which one to go for and they were also fairly expensive IIRC. But will have another look, as I'd love to be able to just put the radio on and listen!

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2015 08:31

SC Is it the Logitech Smart Radio you have? Can only see Logitech Squeezebox otherwise, which is €€€. And, most importantly, is it easy to operate? Grin The last radio I owned was one where you turned a dial to get to the station...

DarkEvilMoon · 11/06/2015 08:47

linzer we have a digital one in the kitchen which you turn a dial to tune in to a station Grin

Morning SC hope you have a good day

ds is suffering emotional kick back and is totally exhausted. So I am leaving him to sleep in a bit. I have printed his homework so that is ready when he is a bit more awake. When the no sleeping one closes his eyes, rolls over and goes back to sleep in the morning then you know it is a level of tired that can't be ignored. Tbh i have a level of exhaustion that shouldn't be ignored but is going to have to be a bit due to building work in the laundry room as of tomo so need to get mount washmore done before tomo, and there is various other chores that need doing.

Good luck and productive flying Fledglings.

Actually it is the Logitech Squeezebox Radio Linzer (one of the advantages of having a very messy office is that I was able to find the box covered in dust) Wink

As you say, it was rather £££££££ but it's very solid and we've had it for over three years now I think and have used it twice daily for that period so I think it does pay for itself over time. And we only use one tiny bit of its capacity, I know it can do more than we use it for.

The first one, that the rabbits ate, wasn't a Squeezebox (can't quite remember what it was but will ask dh) and it was quite difficult to operate.

[Downs special brew gratefully and waves to DEM] Good luck with Mt Washmore!

Crikey, I've just seen the time, I've been on my behind in front of the computer for far too long this morning!

Had better get to it [again]

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2015 09:11

I like the sound of your radio, DEM! Hope DS's lie-in helps and that you're able to catch up on sleep at some point too.

SC Hmm, according to Amazon the "normal" Squeezebox has been discontinued and you can now only get a Squeezebox Touch for £450. Shock But I like the look of the Smart Radio and it does sound like a good brand. Maybe one to put on my birthday list!

Have just cleared the breakfast things away and it looks like DS didn't actually have any breakfast; I wasn't around to remind him as I was busy printing out a picture of a hydroelectric power station for him to take to school. Hmm With the number of things he remembers five minutes before we have to leave, I think I'm going to have to sit down with him the night before and check exactly what he needs the next day.

Steadycampaign · 11/06/2015 09:43

You have my sympathy Linzer!

DD needed for today a special lunch (for after sport) her carte d'identitie, extra water, her travel Card (Oyster card equiv), a sports kit (but not the ordinary school one) and a sun hat (only told night before, luckily was able to adapt one to fit). And none of her existing sandals fit (nor do the ones I ordered on-line) so she went in ones that were slightly too small. It's been a different formula all week!

[Oh dear - I am still on the computer - just done much reduced on-line shop - the prices have trebled!)

Is it a coincidence that we were both due to do household chores this morning and we are the ones nattering on here? Grin

Had better turn off the screen ...

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2015 12:22

A complete coincidence I'm sure, SC. Grin I managed to tear myself away from the computer in the end and have spent most of the morning decluttering the office; I haven't got rid of quite as much as I'd have liked, but it's certainly looking tidier.

That's quite a list of requirements for your DD - DS and I struggle if he needs just one extra thing (he forgot his trainers on Monday - his class is currently training for the town race at end of June - but said his normal shoes were more comfortable to run in anyway Hmm). Tbf if he does have to take more in - if they go on an outing, for example - I'll write everything in the calendar so that we remember it all. Mind you, his trainers were written in the calendar... I really need to get back into the habit of getting everything ready the night before.

DD2 will be home in about 20 minutes so I'd better go and see about lunch (DS went to a friend's straight after school so I've had an extra 1.5 hours of child-free time) and take the pile of papers I've decluttered down to our paper recycling box.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/06/2015 12:38

We've got the Logitech Squeezebox and, er, I hate it. DH has his entire music catalogue streamed through it and the navigation is awful. Same for tuning, there are some presets, but when you want a different station the search/browse functionality is poor. Finally the BBC no longer stream live sports coverage through it in the UK so my weekend afternoons with 5Live sports commentary are no more, well, I have to use the transistor radio or Iplayer on a phone or tablet. We've got no DAB reception here either.

MaggieMcVitie · 11/06/2015 13:38

Feeling a bit 'meh' today to be honest - last of 4 nights tonight though so hopefully will catch up a bit after that!
Didn't get much done yesterday although cleared up then kitchen nightmare. Today's list...
*Vacuum stairs and sweep hard floors downstairs (have just adopted DDog2 - quite incredible how much hair two of the things produce on a daily basisBlush
*Walk DDogs and feed
*Pick up DS's and feed
*Deposit DS2 at swimming en route to work

DS2 is nearly 10 Linzer diagnosed just before his 6th birthday. He was on MDI for a year but he spent that year swinging from hyper to hypo and had stomach aches, headaches etc constantly. Since being on the pump things have been much more controlled, although just lately we have had to do some adjusting to keep up with growth spurts/pre-pubescence. Am I right in thinking you are outside the UK? We were in hospital for 4 days on diagnosis and just had a days training as outpatients to set up the pump - although lots of support from DSN who was available 24/7 for first two weeks.
DS is amazing, copes really well and is very independent for a 9 year old. We are VERY determined not to get bogged down in the 'woe is me' negativity. DS knows it won't stop him doing anything (just sometimes needs a little more planning!).
Total thread hijack! Sorry everyone - back to cleaning...Grin

DarkEvilMoon · 11/06/2015 13:48

Ds did not really lie in but curled up with a duvet in front of the tv leaving me to sleep. WHich is both a blessing and a curse as feeling very out of it atm and not really any better. It will have done good but I have really pushed the limits of burn out and it is going to take a considerable amount of concerted rest before I feel better I suspect.

Mount washmore has been ignored, so must thrown in a load before we head out tonight.

Nice to see all the chit chat on the thread Grin

Interesting to hear a different opinion, WhoKnows. Maybe I should just reinstall the BBC radio app and make an effort to use it; it's hardly difficult, after all.

Maggie Good to hear another positive story; I think I'm going to have stop looking at the FB groups as they just worry me. Yes, we're in Austria; it's great that DD1 is so well looked after here, but tbh the long hospital stays are a bit of a pain - especially as the hospital isn't particularly close and involves a scaryish (for me) drive on the motorway. Ah well, I'm sure it will all be worth it once DD1 has her pump. Which one does your DS have?

DEM Sorry you're not feeling any better. I often feel worse if I have more sleep than I've been used to even if I needed it but, like you said, I'm sure it will have done you good.

Done:
Defrosted Cooked lunch
Reminded and helped DD2 to write letter
Written to-do list Grin

Hmm, not very impressive. Have just worked out I'm feeling thirsty (very unusual for me) as I haven't yet had any coffee this afternoon, so will go and put machine on - I should really have a glass of water too...

Fizrim · 11/06/2015 15:00

Just a quick post - sorry to flake out again, on Friday I developed non-stop nosebleeds (never had any problems before!) and have been in hospital until today. May catch up over the weekend but may have another week's resting time yet.

Hope everyone is doing OK. Flowers

Steadycampaign · 11/06/2015 15:11

Yes Linzer I would probably go with Whoknows's advice regarding technical products rather than mine, esp as I only use my radio really for Radio 4, 5 and the occasional local BBC station. And it is true about 5 Live sports commentary which I had forgotten (because I rarely listen to it) but there is often the "owing to rights restrictions, this programme is not availalbe at this time" , "perhaps on another platform blah blah" message playing. Also remember, now Whoknows mentions it, that navigation was a bit 'quirky' initially, until I got used to it, but I don't navigate terribly far or wide. We do apparently have DAB reception though (whatever that is Grin) Sorry, I'm hopeless with this sort of thing!!

Linzer/Maggie really impressive to hear about your dcs dealing with diabetes so positively. Incredibly mature of them (and inspiring!) given their ages.

Sorry you are both feeling so (understandably) shattered DEM and Maggie - hope you can both catch up with sleep over the next few days ... .

I've been a woefully poor Flyer today. I did my usual morning routines. I've taken dog for long walk. I've ironed one panier of clothes. I've sorted plumber for tomorrow. I've wasted time on Mumsnet. I'm about to do some cooking ...

All terribly tedious (apart from dog) I'm afraid

Heart not in it today somehow is it ever.

Ed Pysch assessment went alright but like DEM and Whoknows I felt a bit depressed by the reminders of ds2's "deficits". The good news is that his reading has jumped from that of a 9 year old in Year 7 to that of an 11 year old (although he is of course 13 WinkSad) Spelling still remains sadly at 9 year old level (but is up from 7 year old) Felt really gloomy and grumpy afterwards. Ed Pysch said his autism affected all his scores Sad

However supper went well (I banished dh) and we had sausage carbonara - sounds foul but it was quite nice..

House a tip. Everyone in a good mood though.

Just about to start putting everyone to bed which does not bode well.

BlueEyeshadow · 11/06/2015 22:19

Sorry to hear that, Fiz, hope the hospital can find the cause and sort it out quickly.

I'm feeling very confused following the house viewing. It was a lovely house - almost perfect - but not an ideal location, and a couple of rooms are a little smaller than we'd like in terms of future proofing. But the garden is beautiful and it has a lovely feel. The doer-upper house has more space and a better location, and could have that lovely feel once it's done, but I feel uneasy about it all. Oh dear. Confused

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/06/2015 23:14

Evening,

I'm am feeling like a failed Flyer this week. I keep going to the allotment instead of doing housework. Never mind. I did do some vacuuming this morning, and clean the bathroom basin.

And in random other news, I have made some mango chutney tonight and it is bloody lovely. DH came home with a box of them cheap from the market the other day, and DS, who is the main consumer of mangoes here, is away this week, so chutney it is.

Looking forward to DS coming home tomorrow.

Swan - my sympathies over the EP report, I find the conflict of interest the hardest, you are pleased about progress for about 30 seconds till you realise it hinders your case for getting more help, then you feel cross with yourself for not being 100% happy about the progress.

Blue - house buying is not easy. With this house we went for small but amazing location. The smallness can be a PITA, but I am grateful every day for the location, in terms of the view, the closeness to all the places we go to regularly and it being a lovely neighbourhood.

Fiz - that sounds horrible, you take it easy and I hope it all clears up.

LinzerTorte · 12/06/2015 07:29

Morning all,

Done:
Taken DS to school
Food shop (quick dash round supermarket followed by ages at baker's due to ridiculously long queue)

To do:
Change dermatologist's appointments (have only just realised I've arranged them for the very day that DD1 goes into hospital Blush)
Send e-mail re DD2's birthday party
Book train tickets for summer (or rather, find out about train times so I can ask my parents to book them)
Order more Eagle creek bags for summer holiday (despite DH being Hmm about the money I've already spent on them)

Fizrim How worrying; hope you're doing ok. Have they got to the bottom of what was causing the nosebleeds?

SC It's definitely good to hear different opinions re the radio. I only really listen to Radio 4, but keep meaning to try 5 too; 5 Live sports commentary isn't an issue, at any rate (I avoid anything sports-related Grin). I've heard of DAB reception, but don't have a clue what it is.

swan Sorry to hear you were feeling down after assessment; good to hear he's making progress, though.

Blue House dilemma sounds very tricky. I would agree with WhoKnows on the importance of location, but of course you have to feel at home in the house as well.

WhoKnows Mango chutney sounds lovely; the DC love mangoes, but I find them a bit of a faff to prepare (bought a mango chopper thing not long ago, but it was no help whatsoever).

Toffee Good luck for today!

DH and DD1 will be home later; it's been so quiet without them, even though I've had the noisiest two at home. Uphill walks in the heat aside, being without a car has been surprisingly manageable. Annoyingly, my fitbit has chosen this week - when I've been doing slightly more walking than usual - to give up the ghost.

Steadycampaign · 12/06/2015 10:57

Waves to all!

Suffice to say it's all gone belly up here this morning (having gone so well up to now).

DD came back totally exhausted last night (after academic and sports exams, inc gym and long-distance running in the heat) - lay on sofa from 5.00pm until 8.30pm when she went to bed - had to hand feed her spaghetti and meatballs as she was hungry but too tired to eat! She got up and got ready (v slowly) for school this morning but was crying and complaining of being too tired to go - and sure enough on the way there - she felt ill in the car so we gave up and came home. She is now in bed asleep and she has a sore throat and a headache which doesn't bode well for all important exams next week.

Bugger and bugger and bugger. I am now kicking myself because I allowed myself to be persuaded against my better judgement that this would be OK and she could manage two sets of exams consecutively. Can only hope that she will be ok after a complete three day rest and if I get a load of vitamin rich food in to her.

In addition, dh back from his trip and has totally over-done it too; he's exhausted and tired and grumpy and uncommunicative and there are huge tasks going on in the office that need to be completed by Wed of this week and everyone is feeling the stress.

In addition, we have a leak and the plumber is here tearing up bits of the kitchen trying to find it

Cleaner has cancelled this morning and entire house is also somehow an unspeakable mess in every room again -despite my spending nearly three full days this week choring - obviously didn't do it very effectively.

And I have cancelled coffee with friend (and my volunteering slot which I was supposed to do for someone else, who has done it for me for last two weeks, so not good at all, although fortunately have got someone else to kindly step in).

Sorry for whinge-fest! At least now dd is here sleeping, I have to stay in and can't avoid Flying (or ironing) and I can always spend 5 mins stroking the dog if I get totally demoralised ...!!

Swan I'm so sorry you had such a stressful day yesterday - it must be so hard - but you should give yourself credit for the improvement in your ds2's reading scores - congratulations to both of you!

Blue good luck with your difficult decision! Despite all the difficulties here, I think I would still go for the doer-upper because a family inevitably expands as time goes on, in terms of space requirements if nothing else, and location vital I think. If you are bound to make a profit on the renovation over time, then it "just" depends on current availability of energy/time/money and enthusiasm on the part of your dh and yourself and life is hard enough without the extra hassle sometimes. Can totally understand someone NOT wanting to take a project on (if you saw this place you would run a mile!) Having said all that, one does get surprisingly used to sacks of concrete sitting in the hall Grin (How's that for a totally unhelfpul flip-flop answer? Confused Grin)

Whoknows I'm with you on the "failed Flyer" business this week! And believe me, if I'd had an allotment to have escaped to over the past few days, I would have been down there every minute of every day! Chutney sounds delicious!

Hope you are OK Fizrim

Big waves to everyone else!

I'd better get on. No need to write a to da list because it would be a continuation of the same wretched tasks that have needed doing all week .... Blush Need to stop stressing and dithering and start DOING.
