How often do normal people.....

Ineedacleaningfairy · 07/04/2015 10:35

-change duvet covers/sheets
-change tea towels
-Hoover
-mop
-clean windows
-change towels

My parents are wonderful people in many ways, but they are really really bad at housekeeping, when I was growing up our house was a tip and I never really learnt how to clean. I'd be really interested to hear how often people with more normal levels of cleanliness do the above jobs, I have 2 toddlers and I'd like to have a more normal home especially for when they start having friends visiting.

Thank you Flowers

Change sheets - every sunday
Tea towels - every couple of days
Hoover - 2/3 times a wk downstairs, whole house on a wknd
Mop kitchen - once or twice a week
Windows - window cleaner once a month, do inside probably every 6 wks (usually do them in school hols)
Change towels - once a week but me and dp have our own and dry them properly. Not just left on the floor or anything.

Geberally mon-fri is just general cleaning, eg. Push vac round, wipe kitchen down each night, keep on top of washing up, tidy for 5mins before bed.
Then tend to do an hour or two on a sunday morning, clean bathroom/ strip bed/ do all bins etc

DoItTooJulia · 07/04/2015 10:42

I like a clean and tidy house so I Hoover lots! Mop less often, but I do have antibacterial floor wipes that I use between moppings.
Bedding changed no less than fortnightly.
Tea towels are changed constantly and I'm no decent yardstick for this because we can get through 5+ tea towels a day. Bath towels every other shower and bathroom hand towels every day. (I am constantly doing laundry!).
Windows less often but the kitchen and living room ones get a wash much more often than any others.
I work four days a week during term time and have two dcs aged 2.5 and 10.

Hth?

lottiegarbanzo · 07/04/2015 10:48

Most cleaning tasks once a week. Sheets can go two weeks though weekly is nicer. Windows much less often. Daily activity is just dishes and wiping surfaces.

I regard myself as normal and our house as perfectly acceptable - but certainly not spotless or perpetually tidy.

Ineedacleaningfairy · 07/04/2015 10:58

Your replies are so helpful, thanks! I think we should change bedding more often, the idea of doing it on a weekend morning is great I think we'll adopt that :)

Towels and sheets weekly
Hoovering - downstairs, daily. Upstairs, every couple days.
Tea towels - every couple days

I'm a sahm so I think it's part of my job to ensure that the house is always clean and tidy, food made etc. but I have 14mo ds 'helping' all day so sometimes it's a hard time just managing dishes!!

HeyheyheyGoodbye · 07/04/2015 11:42

Sheets - every two weeks, more often when it's hot
Tea towels - every few days
Hoover - once a week unless there's a particular spill/mess
Mop - same
Windows - lol
Towels - I wash them after about two uses, I think. DH would use the same one for months if I let him Hmm

Thurlow · 07/04/2015 11:52

change duvet covers/sheets - fortnightly generally, maybe more in the summer (but it's easier then because we tend not to have a duvet in, just use the cover as a light blanket)

change tea towels - when they look manky, probably every few days

Hoover - weekly, I'd say, with a quick sweep if there's something very messy on the floor

mop - every few weeks in the kitchen and bathroom, less in the living room and dining room (wooden floors) but we've recently got a steam mop which is fantastic, quick to use and also the floors dry really quickly, so I'm going to make a real effort to do this more

clean windows - our worst one, almost never Blush Been in our house 3 years and this weekend was the first time we attacked the front window (but again, the steam mop has a window attachment so I'm going to make more of an effort)

change towels - every few weeks, they hang to dry on a heated towel rail so I've never quite got the need to change them really regularly (am possibly wrong on this one as everyone else seems to change them all the time!)

I wouldn't say our house is overly clean at all. We both work f/t and have a toddler. House is acceptable but plenty of people would probably consider our standards a bit low and would probably find more dust etc than they'd like. I've never pulled the furniture out to hoover behind it, for example Blush

MrsMarigold · 07/04/2015 12:08

I would say it depends on the size of your house. I live in a big house it takes six hours to do a basic clean so it only gets hoovered every few weeks apart from the kitchen and main sitting room which are done most days. Stairs hoovered once a week, kitchen floor mopped thoroughly once a week but superficial wipes daily.

Change sheets usually fortnightly used to do it weekly but everyone has double beds.

Change towels and bath mats every few days.

Windows rarely cleaned need to get someone in for the upper levels.

Loos every few days, basins daily, clothes every time they are worn, dishes and kitchen surfaces very clean because I use boiling water.

I hate chemicals so stick to fairy liquid and the odd bit of thick bleach and the odd bit of vinegar but I hate the smell.

lottiegarbanzo · 07/04/2015 13:48

Also depends how many people spend how much time in your house.

Our 'do everything once a week' approach comes from having two adults working full time.

Now I'm here with dd during the week, I mostly, deliberately, stick to that pattern, so that DP and I still share the main tasks (bathrooms, floors) equally but, I do a bit more during the week - Hoover sitting room, sweep kitchen more often - and do things like laundry and cleaning bathrooms in smaller portions, more frequently.

Skeppers · 07/04/2015 14:07

We're pretty gross in our house, to be fair, but it's just the two of us (at the moment) and I'm going to try and improve when baby arrives...yes, I do appreciate the irony of that statement...I mean eventually! Wink

-change duvet covers/sheets: probably monthly/every 6 weeks. Used to be a lot longer. I kind of like our stank on the bedsheets; I find it calming and comforting. I can't settle in clean-smelling bedsheets- maybe it's a primal/animal scent type thing?

-change tea towels: once a week cos I bung them in with the laundry

-Hoover: twice a week (when we can be arsed)

-mop: what's that??

-clean windows: more frequently than we used to, since we had new double glazing put in and now have a mould problem...Hmm But as for the outside? Literally only when they are so black that they block out light, then we pay someone else to do it.

-change towels: again, every 4-6 weeks. But we do dry and air them in between uses, they don't get slung on the floor/in a basket. And if we have guests they always get clean towels & bedding. Of course!

I know that this falls short of some peoples' standards, but we both work full-time long hours and neither of us can be arsed to do chores when we do have free time! Although, I am feeling a bit more 'nesty' with the pregnancy so I am doing a bit more than usual.

Although, I am a real fascist when it comes to washing up (for some reason). My washing up standards are immaculate! You'll never find a tea stained cup or dried egg fork in my house. All cutlery/crockery is absolutely mint. Isn't it weird? Maybe it's because I used to do silver service waitressing part-time when I was at Uni, so got into the habit of polishing cutlery, etc. MIL is super houseproud- spends all her time cleaning/tidying/redecorating, but every time we go there to eat she has dirty cutlery, glasses or plates. She blames the dishwasher. It still makes me feel better!

Justusemyname · 07/04/2015 14:12

-change duvet covers/sheets - every week.
-change tea towels - several times a day.
-Hoover - no set pattern, when it needs but not always enough.
-mop - no set pattern, needs to be more than I do.
-clean windows - randomly.
-change towels - twice a week though kids don't always stick to that.

Today I've cleaned both upstairs bathrooms, cleaned a few windows and mirrors, vacuumed downstairs, swept and mopped kitchen and utility room, put on four wash loads, cooked a meal, loaded the dishwasher and embarrassingly shouted at my children.

We have cleaners twice a week - it's bliss.

-change duvet covers/sheets - every 2 weeks. Our bed one week, 2 x children's beds other week.
-change tea towels - I have a million of them, so they get thrown in the utility room sink each evening, washed approx once a week
-Hoover - cleaners do it twice a week
-mop - cleaners do it twice a week
-clean windows - whenever cleaner has time/tells me she can't put up with them any more Blush
-change towels - every 3/4 days, it could be a week if I don't think of it. They are air dried between uses.

StupidFlanders · 07/04/2015 14:31

Almost exactly as almostnever but I will do more if time allows.

olbas · 07/04/2015 14:47

-change duvet covers/sheets
All 6 are changed weekly.
-change tea towels
Every day... believe me they need it Confused
-Hoover
Everyday but bedrooms once a week.
-mop
Everyday...I have outdoorsie children and a big dog
-clean windows
Every couple of months
-change towels
Everyone has their own towel so once maybe twice a week. Hand towels every few days

mayfridaycomequickly · 07/04/2015 15:02

Bedding - probably fortnightly, mord often if I've not got much other washing.

Tea towels - randomly. Sometimes every day, sometimes every 2 or 3 - i tend to bung them in with each wash I do so depends on the washing.

Hoover - every day since I got a dyson hand held as it's on the wall. Still not enough as we've got a shedding cat and an old manky carpet (we're in a do up house)

Windows - outside gets done by the window cleaner once a fortnight. Inside gets done when we get round to it (when the window cleaner tells me they're manky). Dp bought a squeejie thing in ikea a couple of months ago and he's used it twice. Before that not for months.

Towels - much more randomly than most. I don't get a full set out and wash a full set (altho that'd probably be easier) so they just get chucked in the wash every few uses. We share towels - I know that's frowned on here but I've never had separate ones!

worldsgonemade · 07/04/2015 15:23

Well I feel like I have a problem after reading the other posts, wish I could be that laid back with cleaning.
Bed sheets, twice a week
Hoover every morning whole house, every evening whole house, hoover where needed in between kitchen definitely after making lunch, playroom probably 2/3 times extra through throughout the day.
Clean bathrooms, both and downstairs toilet every morning, clean toilets in between where needed.
Wash floors, every morning whole house is hard wood apart from stair case and landing, kitchen, dining room and playroom are re done in the evening. I'll wipe around back door area several times when kids play out in garden.
Kitchen, everytime it's used. Cupboard doors every morning, fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer wiped.over every morning.
Towel daily
Tea towel only.used once
Dust daily everywhere
Windows inside daily Out side weekly wwindow cleaner.
Rooms tidied daily.several times.
Clean fridge inside most days.
Clothes washed after every wear ironed as soon as dry.

I think.I clearly have a problem but just can't relax in mess, I have tried.

CanToCandle · 07/04/2015 15:26

Not often enough for all of the above

Naicecuppatea · 07/04/2015 15:32

Wow, worldsgonemade!!! How do you find time to do all that every day?

Handbag55 · 07/04/2015 15:34

worldsgonemade Wow!!! Just wow. Where do you find the time?

cosytoaster · 07/04/2015 15:36

change duvet covers/sheets - cover fortnightly, sheets weekly

change tea towels - daily

Hoover - twice a week downstairs, much less frequently upstairs

mop - weekly unless something spilled

clean windows - honestly, about once a year Blush

change towels - not sure - feels like constantly though (we all have our own colour coded ones)

Fifis25StottieCakes · 07/04/2015 15:39

-change duvet covers/sheets weekly
-change tea towels every few days depending on whats been done with them
-Hoover 3x per dfay, 3 kids 2 dogs
-mop once, sometimes twice a day
-clean windows monthly
-change towels after every bath

fieldfare · 07/04/2015 15:40

Worldsgonemad, that sounds exhausting.

Bedding - once a week
Towels - once a week
Tea towels - every day
Clean the windows - once a month
Clean the patio doors - once a week when I dust as they get small handprints on!
Dust - once a week
Hoover - every day after dinner
Mop - once a week, inbetween if there's a big spill
Bathrooms - upstairs, once a week toilets daily, downstairs loo daily

Our house is fairly clean and tidy. I'm not afraid of someone calling in unannounced!

worldsgonemade · 07/04/2015 15:41

I am a stay at home mum, 2 oldest dd are in school, youngest is still at home. It really doesn't take that long once your in the habit of doing it and it not being that dirty helps. Evening clean gets done while dh baths the children. I know to some will seem ridiculous but.it's just something I need to do, when we go on holiday or day out I will get up a couple of hours early to preform these tasks. If I didn't could relax and enjoy myself knowing I was coming home.to a dirty house. Admittedly not that dirty as would have been cleaned the evening before but just something I feel I need to do.

GiveOverLuv · 07/04/2015 15:41

change duvet covers/sheets once a week

change tea towels whenever they look grubby

Hoover when ever the rugs look grubby (wooden floors in most of the house, so maybe every couple of days?)

mop whene ver the floors look grubby, prob twice a week whole house, every other day in kitchen

Clean windows - cant recall last time! Our windows are terrible Grin

change towels - prob twice a week. We have loads of towels though, so prob only use each towel twice
