How often do normal people.....

Ineedacleaningfairy · 07/04/2015 10:35

-change duvet covers/sheets
-change tea towels
-Hoover
-mop
-clean windows
-change towels

My parents are wonderful people in many ways, but they are really really bad at housekeeping, when I was growing up our house was a tip and I never really learnt how to clean. I'd be really interested to hear how often people with more normal levels of cleanliness do the above jobs, I have 2 toddlers and I'd like to have a more normal home especially for when they start having friends visiting.

Thank you Flowers

I don't know if I'm normal, but my house is pretty tidy/clean most of the time. The parts of the house that other people see anyway!

-change duvet covers/sheets - about once a week. Sometimes more often if needed (Co sleep with a baby)
-change tea towels - every day
-Hoover - twice a week. We have no pets.
-mop - dp does this. About 2 or 3 times a week
-clean windows - window cleaner comes every month
-change towels - a towel or two usually goes in with every washing load so they're constantly cycled.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 07/04/2015 15:50

worlds your like my DM, i feel like a pure slob compared to her even though i clean my house it never looks tidy like hers, its clean but im no good as being organised whereas she is, Washing off the line one piece at a time, ironed, hung up and put away, mine goes on the clean polished table in a pile to be ironed at a later date, i have a real problem with clothes i just can't seem to bring myself to change my ways

Ineedacleaningfairy · 07/04/2015 16:26

I'm in awe of people who just sort of tidy up/clean as they go along. I really struggle to clean when I have the kids with me as it always ends up turning into mucking about which makes more mess!

Clothes we seem to go through at a ridiculous rate, the kids usually go through at least 2 outfits a day and me at least one, reusing clothes never seems to happen as they have food/mud/milk/paint all over them. I don't iron so at least that's one less thing to think about.

Tea towels, this is going to sound so daft, but what do you actually use them for? We have a dishwasher so I hardly ever use our tea towel.

It's great to hear about everyone's routines! Thank you :)

Bedding weekly, the rest when needed: at least every week but usually more often (esp hoovering, which I could do all day and it would still look grubby)

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 07/04/2015 16:38

Tea towels get used for those things that cone out of the dishwasher with pools of water on them (eg underside of bowls) and the few glasses and knives we wash up by hand. Plus mopping up spills when that's the first thing to hand Smile

nilbyname · 07/04/2015 16:48

-change duvet covers/sheets.
Once a fortnight

-change tea towels
Everyday we go through them for spills, mouth wiping, flooding, emergency oven mitts

-Hoover
Upstairs weekly, down every day or so
-mop
Bathroom- weekly
Kitchen 2/3 times a week
-clean windows
Inside a couple of times a year, outside about the same!
-change towels
Hand towels daily, bath towels every other day.

I do a load of laundry almost everyday.
I dust Polish 1/month Blush

I clean the loo/sink everyday and then give the family bathroom a blitz every week. I cannot abide a grotty lavatory.

museumum · 07/04/2015 16:50

Pretty much everything happens once a week in our house (but we have a dishwasher so don't actually use tea towels to dry dishes).

fairgame · 07/04/2015 16:50

change duvet covers/sheets - every other week.
-change tea towels - once or twice per week
-Hoover - once a week
-mop- once a week
-clean windows - never
-change towels - wednesday and saturday
Bathroom gets cleaned on a Monday.
Polishing gets done once per week.
Leather gets cleaned once per week.
Glass/mirrors gets done once per week.
Washing gets done Wednesday and Saturdays.

I have a housework app that keeps me on top of it otherwise i'd lose track and nothing would get done til it was disgusting.

Only me and DS (10) and were both out from 8-4 mon-fri so don't make that much mess.
I don't do the windows outside because i'm scared of heights and it would involve me getting on a ladder. We did have a window cleaner but i've not seen him since July Sad
I clean the windows inside probably every 3 months.

woowoo22 · 07/04/2015 19:42

worlds how long do you spend on it each day? Does it ever really get dirty if you clean so often?

ThenThereWereEight · 07/04/2015 19:59

Much like WhatWouldBlairWaldorfDo (but since getting a puppy, I am cleaning ALL the time!).

MangosMangosMangos · 07/04/2015 20:42

-change duvet covers/sheets: weekly when we are organised. 2 or 3 or more otherwise.

-change tea towels: when they need it.

-Hoover: when the floor is crunchy underfoot or Friday, which ever happens first.

-mop: when it starts looking grubby.

-clean windows: once a year in the spring, huge fiasco usually with 1 or more DCs wanting to help, everyone gets soaked. They didn't get done last year because I was pg so it has been 2 years now...

-change towels: bath towels weekly, hand towels in kitchen/bathroom/loo daily or more.

WhereTheresTeaTheresHope · 07/04/2015 20:52

Bed linen - I aim for weekly but occasionally it stretches to fortnightly.

Towels - mine daily (small towels that I then wipe bathroom down with) DH & DC weekly.

Tea towels - daily

Windows - not often enough! Quarterly! Too many windows!

Dust - weekly or sooner if it annoys me. Allergic to dust.

Hoover - daily. Have cats.

Mop - steam mop kitchen weekly. No shoes go in there. Wipe up spills. Bathroom floor gets scrubbed with bleach fortnightly and dried daily from DC bathtime.

Bathroom - wiped down daily. De-moulded, scrubbed and shined weekly/fortnightly.

Washer on daily. More often if the weathers good enough to line dry.

Monday is my favourite housework day (SAHM) when everyone has gone to school/work. In the holidays the house falls apart. Baby wipes are great for quick dusting jobs when I don't have the time to clean properly. Kitchen gets cleaned daily, sides wiped regularly. Currently drowning in toys/clutter, need a good spring clean.

I have picked up the 15 minute cleaning tip on here. Set your alarm, run around doing as much as you can. Totally works! Looks much better after those 15 mins of flurry tidying.

hollyisalovelyname · 07/04/2015 21:34

After reading this thread I realize I an a slattern.
Worlds I wish I was like you. I am in awe.
It's all relative though. My dm thinks I am anal re cleaning, whereas I know I'm far from it.
A little dust and (dare I say) dirt doesn't do harm. Builds up the immune system Grin

CremeEggThief · 07/04/2015 23:11

Bedding: fortnightly (sometimes weekly in summer, and three weekly in winter. I sleep alone, however.
Tea towels: never, as I don't use them.
Towel change: once a week.
Vacuuming: usually once a week, but downstairs sometimes twice and upstairs sometimes fortnightly.
Windows: once a year! I can't find a window cleaner locally, or the outside would be monthly.

CremeEggThief · 07/04/2015 23:12

Mopping: kitchen floor once a fortnight week.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 07/04/2015 23:29

Fairgame what app do you use?

Tea towels: every 2 days
Towels: every day
Sweep floors: every day
Toilets: daily
Windows: rarely. I am rubbish at cleaning windows. They always look worse when I'm finished. In fact if anyone has any foolproof window cleaning tips I would be grateful. Grin

fairgame · 08/04/2015 08:09

It's just a basic tick list app called Chore Checklist Lite. You can edit it to put on which ever chores you want and set them up for daily, weekly, monthly, fortnightly etc. It does the whole red green amber thing as well when you've been lazy. It's free on Android.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/04/2015 08:46

Blimming hec worldsgonemade how do you find time to relax, or do anything interesting with your life, if all your time is spent cleaning things that aren't dirty? I don't mean to be rude but I feel pity not awe.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 08/04/2015 12:31

Thanks fairgame. I've never thought of using an app for organising cleaning. I've downloaded it. It will actually be helpful to see how often I do certain tasks as apart from the ones I listed in my post, the others are a bit random atm.

AdoraBell · 08/04/2015 12:52

Sheets/duvet covers - sheets weekly and because we use a top sheet under the duvet the duvet cover doesn't get washed very often.

Towels - mine after 2/3 showers, DDs use them once and DH would keep the same one indefinitely for about a week but I change it after a couple of days

Tea towels- this also covers hand towels. DH dries the sink thoroughly every time he uses it so the towel is eternally damp, so I change it every time I find I can't dry my hands because the towel is wet. Ditto tea towels. They get used for everything indescriminatley so I sling them in the wash throughout the day. DH is a bit of a hoarder so we have enough towels to keep this system goingHmm

Windows/patio doors - when DH gets around to it, he aims to do it monthly.

Dust - every other day, dry dusty climate makes it necassary

Hoover - see above

Mop - depends on many factors. I feel it should be done daily but rarely achieve this.

Bathrooms - See above. I do a quick flick over the one DH and I use each morning. The one the teenage DDs use needs nuking gets done on a roughly weekly basis.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 09/04/2015 06:49

I think how often stuff gets done depends on how much free time you have. DH and I both work full time, so all our jobs tend to get left until the weekend.

Bedding - weekly. But we have teens and they are responsible for doing their own laundry. I have no idea how often they wash their bedding and towels, but judging from the smell in their rooms, not often enough.

Towels - weekly

Tea towels - changed mid week and weekends

Hoovering - weekly in all parts of house except the dc's rooms (see above).

Kitchen floor - swept 2 or 3 times a week, washed weekly.

Windows - window cleaner comes every 6 weeks for the outside. Inside not as often as they should be Wink

Our house is relatively tidy but not immaculate.

Fourarmsv2 · 09/04/2015 07:58

-change duvet covers/sheets - about weekly-fortnightly. But often throw white sheets & pillowcases in more regularly to bulk up whites load
-change tea towels - every time they get damp. Used for drying hands or spills. All tea towels around are washed with every wash.
-Hoover - when rugs look like they need it. Weekly or more often in holidays
-mop - with microfibre brush and spray - twice a week
-clean windows - yearly
-change towels - weekly (hair towel) or twice / thrice weekly.

MTWTFSS · 09/04/2015 08:24

Not often enough Blush

PeppermintCrayon · 09/04/2015 08:30

Change duvet covers/sheets: once a week -when we can be arsed. I hate changing bedding but clean sheets are so lovely.

Change tea towels: when they look a bit grubby.

Hoover: once a week.

Mop: not very often! Sweep kitchen floor when it looks like it needs it. Bathroom gets cleaned once a fortnight. Should be once a week I think but that never happens.

Clean windows: rarely if ever

Change towels: once a week

Damnautocorrect · 09/04/2015 08:46

I grew up in a hoarders house, it was filthy. So never learnt to clean, I'm paranoid now about what's normal and what's not as I never know.
But here's mine
beds - once a week
windows - once a month
bathrooms - every other day
tea towels - changed every few days, boiled washed when there's enough!
hoover - aim for every day but it is probably every other.
mop - every other day.
clean Skirtings/ doors/ window frames - weekly.
bath towels - hand towel, a few days, bath a few days.
kitchen doors - weekly
