CycleChic, Newlark - ditto re job situation. Glad we are not alone! Good luck.

Rummikub · 18/04/2015 06:50

I've got the dc to,help me go,throuh their clothes. They're much better at the joy thing than I am. More than half the wardrobe is going to,charity Shock

I can slowly, start to see the space in my home. And I like it :)

Iqueen · 18/04/2015 08:15

Great to see that you are still in the game, Rummikub! Flowers Also, that your DCs are so tuned in! Cake Cake Cake

I've had two weeks of slacking, apart from the random PITA stuff that I can no longer put up with. Smile Like defk0ndo, my tolerance threshold keeps on dropping, so I'm regularly ditching stuff that I can't even be bothered to sort through!

Yesterday, I had intended to finally kill off the 'maybe' pile of clothes in my bedroom, to bring the joy of closure to that category, but I ended up kondoing another part of a legal headache, which is even more joyful. Smile

So, it's 'maybe' clothes today.

My positive mood is still strong. Past de-cluttering books have always lost their magic within days. (Those books have already been kondoed!) My newly found optimism is bringing me so much joy!

NotCitrus · 18/04/2015 08:55

My room is a tip, which was disheartening until I realised that the items are all useful if not especially joyful, and its because of emptying the spare room in 2 days for the lodger to move in.

However, I have gone through all the papers that were in the filing cabinet (I had to as couldn't get to bed one night!) and about half is gone and it's now in more relevant categories, with older stuff separated out at the bottom. And about 25 kilos recycled! Still need to label all the files, but this means any papers around the house can now be properly Kondoed by being put in there (probably MrNC will put them in a 'pending' file but again that's still an improvement.)

prettymess When your kids want some money, tell them how much Lego sets go for on EBay and tell them to dig out a complete set to go with some instructions. Star Wars ones sell well without the figures (or can sell the figures separately). It's saved us a fortune as ds keeps wanting huge sets but actually only wants a certain figure - usually available separately on EBay.

I have just bought another pair of jeans on EBay as getting rid of unflattering ones and others wearing out left a gap. Dd has just grown so time to revisit her clothes. Still getting a lot of joy from my bookcase beside my bed - just need time to read now!

educatingarti · 18/04/2015 09:24

Really struggling here - fibro has kicked in with a vengeance this week and I'm feeling like even the ordinary every day household jobs are getting on top of me!

aaargh!

prettymess · 18/04/2015 10:40

educatingarti, sorry to hear you're in pain. I've got backache at the moment. I think all this tidying & sitting on the floor doing it has caused it. I did my back in last summer and was off work for weeks, so I hope this is a temporary ache. I found pacing (like UFYH suggests) is a good way to get some stuff done. 20 mins and then a 10 min break or whatever is comfortable for you.

BrandNewIggi · 18/04/2015 10:48

Sorry to hear about the health difficulties BrewCake
I do find all the folding (which I do on my bed) hurts my back.

If you can't do stuff, can you use some of the time just to think through a plan of action? I find that when I am ready to kondo, if I don't know what I'm going to do next I waste a lot of time phaffing.
I think my living room is "done" now, I know I'm not supposed to do a room but that really means books, DVDs, CDs, toys, and random kimono. The kitchen has two cupboards left (again, with specific categories in them!)
But I have ignored paperwork (as it is relatively tidy, all in one desk) and the sentimental stuff. Photo albums could take a month!

Brandysnapper · 18/04/2015 10:49

Sorry first bit was to prettymess and educatingarti

thatstoast · 18/04/2015 11:17

Who wants to see my clothes?

Now I have decide what to discard.

prettymess · 18/04/2015 11:18

I'm gathering sentimental stuff and putting it aside as I'm not ready to sort through it. I'm making a lot of piles and bags of stuff on hold as I go along but hopefully should see it reducing as I go through the categories.

thatstoast · 18/04/2015 14:51

And here's what brings me joy! Plus 1 winter coat and 5 pairs of shoes.

One thing I'm stumped by is kid's clothes. Ds is only 14m so unfortunately can't help. Do I deal with his things under clothes category or would you place under komono or even sentimental items?

Kondo thread 8
BrandNewIggi · 18/04/2015 15:31

Wow! What a difference.
I did kids' clothes under clothes. There were some outgrown things that then moved into the sentimental category.

Iqueen · 18/04/2015 15:42

WOW! That's amazing, thatstoast. Star Do you fancy listing what you've kept? I need to be more ruthless. Sad

Rummikub · 18/04/2015 15:46

Thatstoast, when I did the dc clothes I found lots that felt sentimental, worn on special occasions or just really reminded me of a particular phase. And I wanted to keep them so I have for now. When I get to sentimental stuff I have a couple of memory boxes to fill so i'll hopefully have more of a cull then. I find it hard to,get ride of baby stuff, especially when my 2 are much bigger now an I can't believe they were ever that tiny!

Iqueen, I'm still doing clothes too. I have so many. But 3 carrier bags to go to charity and a massive bin bag full for the textiles bin. I think I now just have a towel wash to do, 2 loads of kids clothes and a bedding wash. Almost there!

thatstoast · 18/04/2015 18:52

I have kept:

10 Tops
4 pairs of trousers.
1 pair jeans
1 pair jeggings
2 pair leggings
Socks/underwear - Not enough to be honest.
1 Winter coat
5 pairs of shoes
1 Blazer
1 Cardigan
2 Dresses
1 Dressing Gown
1 Hoodie
3 Scarves

All of my small jewellery collection except 1 pair or earrings.

thatstoast · 18/04/2015 18:53

Oh and two swimming costumes Grin

Iqueen · 18/04/2015 19:51

Thanks so much thatstoast - that's toast really helpful! Flowers Cake Wine

I did my jewellery pre-KM buy I'm sure I can cull some more.

I'm going to print off your list and play around with couple of the items - I haven't got any dresses. On the other hand I do have 2 dressing gowns... a couple of Christmases ago 2 of my daughters bought me the same one, and sentimental me, I couldn't make myself choose one to return! Now , when any of the 3 visits me, we can curl up in matching ones!

Your choices are pretty much everything that I was struggling to arrive at, as a SAH?! Can't wait to eat my spag bol that's bubbling away and get stuck into more discarding! You're a Star

StuntNun · 18/04/2015 20:24

I Kondo'd clothes today as well. Grin

What do people do with jewellery they don't want? I have a hideous emerald necklace that I never wear but the emerald might have some value if there's a market for such things.

educatingarti · 18/04/2015 20:39

Thanks to BrandNew, Brandy and Prettymess for encouragements. I find I'm really resisting making lists at the moment. Maybe because I just get annoyed with myself when nothing not much gets done from them? Struggling tonight with hurtful family issue too so feeling really rubbish! Sad

thatstoast · 18/04/2015 21:41

I think I'll have a go at DS's clothes next but maybe move some things to sentimental if I find myself getting stuck.

My husband's clothes remain in his floordrobe. He did come in and casually mention that I could get rid of any of his trousers that didn't fit. Nice try.

JKSLtd · 18/04/2015 22:09

I listed my outgoing jewellery I my local FB selling site for free. Another mum took them for a jewellery swapping charity evening she's organising.

Dds birthday fast approaching, party tomorrow birthday on Monday. How much tat/treasure will we end up with??

prettymess · 19/04/2015 09:51

Toast, that's amazing and encouraging!

I did jewellery the other day. I purged a lot. Kept one necklace, two pairs of earrings, a bracelet and my watch. I wear my rings and another bracelet all the time. I threw away the cheap stuff. I also have a little pouch with gold and silver bits that I don't know what to do with. Seems wrong to throw and it's all broken stuff so can't give it away and not enough to sell by weight. Argh.

Iqueen · 19/04/2015 10:05

StuntNun

I would take the necklace to a 'good' reputable jeweller to get it/the stone valued.

You might like to get the stone reset into some item (ring/brooch/pendant) that you would wear.

Otherwise put it into a specialist jewellery auction.

Cheaper jewellery can be sold on FB, eBay or carboots, or donated to a CS.

If in any doubt at all about value - get jewellery valued! Plenty of people on the Antiques Roadshow were surprised to find that their diamante piece, was actually diamonds Grin (or vice vera! Sad)

Iqueen · 19/04/2015 10:12

prettymess take your gold and silver scrap to a jeweller and find out how much it is worth! It may only be a tenner but that's better than throwing it away. Precious metals can be weighed in milligrammes! Wink

prettymess · 19/04/2015 10:31

Thanks iqueen! I will hold on to it.

I got a paper yesterday with my Waitress order and have read it, ripped out interesting bits, added good articles to my reading list on Safari and am now photocopying some nice recipes. Paper is in the recycling. I'm putting all my wanna-try-recipes that I've copied over the years from papers and library books in a folder that will be kept in the kitchen. The ones I'm still bothered about trying to make, of course!
