fresh washing keeps smelling awful, like blocked drains

I've done a 60 degree wash but everything still comes out smelling of drains. Cleaned the draw and rim but no change. It's a machine about 10 years old,but still works and is a rated.

Is there anything else I can do? Was thinking about washing with some bleach but not sure if that is safe

Gosh I feel so stupid now. No wonder is my machine smelling, I haven't done a wash above 40 for years. A few months ago I bought fabric conditioner to get rid of the smell Blush

Looking forward to getting nicer smelling washing after I've cleaned my act up. I just thought they were self cleaning Blush

Don't feel stupid! I would never have known if it hadn't been for mil's stinky machine. My DM always drilled into me about washing sheets / towels on a hot wash so I never had the problem before. Let us know how you get on :)

A w/machine repairman told me it was the liquid soap + also the conditioner which slimes round the pipes that causes the smell, in his job he's had to replace quite a few. I bought a box of Dr.Beckmann's Service-it washing machine cleaner to run through it. Only needed to do it once then switched to powder. No probs since.

I was told to use this once every 3 months by a washing machine engineer.

I do the boil wash with vinegar every couple of weeks too because I use a liquid for my coloured clothes to stop them fading.

I run a 90 wash on empty with a dishwasher tablet in the drum every few months, and take the drawer out and put it through the dishwasher.

casually I think it's one of those things you don't think about until you need to IYSWIM. Our old WM that was left by the last owners was stinky on account of not being used for a year but I suspect had stagnant water lurking around in it. It was only when I was trying to sort that out that I found out about WM maintenance Washes etc

All the HG products, mentioned by thefairycaravan are really, seriously good, btw. I use their hob cleaner and it's kept my new hob in bandbox appearance since I discovered it 2yrs ago.
